Description: Lithe and narrow, Hadrian is a tall young man whose angular face, deep-set green eyes, and high forehead stake out a striking challenge to traditional notions of male beauty. Smiles both dazzling and knowing are rarely far from his expressive lips. The blue-black hair that curls ever so slightly about his ears contrasts with the rosy undertones of his pale complexion. The exuberant zest for life that animates him can scarcely be contained by his slim, wide-shouldered frame. Above all else, the intensity and confidence in Hadrian's gaze and gestures make him a spectacle that is difficult to ignore.
Personality: Hadrian has crafted his public persona the way a playwright creates a character, and he has been honing and playing it more than half his life. He is a philanthropist and playboy, loved by Southport's commons for his incorrigible habits as much as his public works. Some wonder if his playful demeanor masks cruelty, for he ruthlessly punishes malfeasance in his government. The true Hadrian Malvici encompasses kindness and cruelty both. He keeps his friends and enemies off-balance, rarely reveals his true motivations, and relishes being larger-than-life. He is a textbook example that over time you often become what you at first pretended to be. If he didn't enjoy himself so much, that might disturb him.
Background: When Hadrian was ten years old, there was the war between his cousin Count Lucien Malvici and Duke Leo Fidante for control of Tor and the Fidante family. He did not know the Count's intentions when the Count pursued a marriage to Leo's mother, the then-ruling Duchess of Tor. The death of the Duchess of Tor and Count Lucien's attempt to delegitimize Duke Leo in favor of Lucien and the Duchess's infant daughter came as a surprise. So did the war and its conclusion with Lucien's death at Leo's hands. Publicly Hadrian's mother the Duchess Malvici of Southport supported Lucien's claim. Privately, she provided him funds as a stake and then offered no more. Lucien risked everything in a single move. It almost worked! In failing, however, he lost everything, including his life. He had been so openly dishonorable even Tor's commons rose against him.
Hadrian drew three lessons. First: daring to defy all convention can achieve what seems impossible. Second: never risk everything in a single throw of the dice. Third: appearance can determine reality. Accordingly, he continued his mischevious behavior so people would expect it from him. At the same time, he began claiming more authority than he had in order to intercede in conflicts among merchant princes, make donations to good causes, and launch unexpected festivals and other spectacles. Many expected his use of power he frankly did not possess yet would be checked by his mother. When protests and questions arose, she would laugh, and explain why she was confirming the young man's judgment in the matter. "He is spirited," she said, as if that explained everything. When he made mistakes, she explained the errors in private. In public, he had her full support and a growing reputation as a maverick Malvici, a roguish youth with compassion for the commons of Southport.
In the eyes of many nobles, to show kindness is to show weakness. Following his mother's abdication in Hadrian's favor, one of her old ministers began skimming from House Malvici's finances. After the minister's execution, the new Duke's bouts of compassion were rarely confused with softness.
His mother died of natural causes, a proud feat for a Lycene aristocrat, and had the pleasure of seeing her son come into his own before she passed.
It was all duty and fun until a previously reclusive ruler from a city-state of the Lyceum came proverbially knocking. Bearing a contract signed by their mothers from two decades past and fulfillment of that contract sought. With the word and honor of not only himself, but his home of Southport and his House on the line there was only one option in the mind of the Duke of Southport. Ever one with a plan, the Duke of Southport accepted the terms. Shortly after Hadrian abdicated from his rule of Southport and went on to marry Marquessa Cambria Mazetti with a most unusual agreement from the past, joining her rule of the reclusive and arguably mysterious city-state of Ostria where once his cousin, Lucien Malvici, had briefly called home.
|Alarie||There is little to say that isn't seen. He's an ambitious Marquise, who knows what he likes and a good negotiation. No matter how ridiculous the opening volley is. The man is ridiculously well connected and a little eccentric. Understandable. This could be beneficial but only time will tell. A year and a day.|
|Alarissa||Perhaps I overstepped, perhaps I didn't. The man is ineresting none the less. it is either the start of a wonderful relationship that will be cultivated over time, or we'll find ourselves never to cross paths. I dear hope that it is the former. He has such a lovely smile after all. As well as an endearing sense of humor.|
|Arcelia||I really met Duke Hadrian for the first time when I got to Arx and within the first month of my arrival he became my mentor. The Duke has shown himself to be a wise and kind man so far. I look forward to working closely with him in the years to come.|
|Caelis||Caelis has known Hadrian for as long as she can remember. Her clever cousin, there is no better fit to lead the family in her mind. She admires his ability to be so dangerous and never need to lift a weapon.|
|Calaudrin||He comes with a lot of guards. He was also looking around on the floor for candy, but I'm not sure I can blame him. I was probably two minutes away from it myself.|
|Clara||Well... Lively fellow. Got down to me level and spoke with me. Guess he might not be so bad if he takes that extra step to look at me in the eye. Nearly made him fall over though, I think. ...but ya... lively. Maybe I'll meet him again, maybe not, but certainly was an interestin' experience.|
|Daemon||The Mazetti's man in charge. He was incredibly polite and welcoming to me at the lovely bash in my honor, for than he has my thanks.|
|Edain||He is very much of product of the Lyceum. Everything he says is very measured, and I always feel like anything I saw to him he is disecting careful and cataloging all the things I revealed I did not mean to. Yet despite all of this, he is gregarious and charming, and his love of his family is easy to see. I think he is a example that just because someone is a product of their enviroment, does not mean they are what you expect of them. Always take the time to look and see how a person is, not what you expect them to be.|
|Eris||Boisterous and amusing, but obviously seriously devoted to his role. I think I shall like him very much.|
|Fortunato||Certainly seemed to be having a better time than I did. We all got our wounds. I can envy someone their leaning back and experiencing.|
|Giulio||A wit, to wit. And what a delightful wit indeed. I do so look forward to future sparring sessions. My cousin chose well.|
|Isolde||With everything going on, it seems like it's been such a long time since I've spoken with Duke Hadrian. His wit and charm have not dulled any. Though, I wonder what's hiding behind his careful smile?|
|Jordan||The danger of having power is losing the part of you that makes you human. We'll see how this man walks that fine line, but what do I know? I'm just a peasant boy who got lucky, in the end.|
|Lorien||There's something about Hadrian that is almost playful. I very much look forward to the opportunity of going on a hunt with him and learning more of the Marquis.|
|Lucita||Strength of character, compassion for others, dignity and wisdom. That's a summary of the initial impression Hadrian made on me during an ARRG meeting and a later dinner at our house. I look forward to working with him and learning more from him.|
|Mercedes||One of the kindest and most entertaining hosts it's been my privledge to meet.|
|Merek||%bMerek has met Hadrian before, but it was for a simple exchange he believes. Still, he trusts the man and knows he has a level mind. As such he thinks they can possibly get along well enough!|
|Mydas||A true thinker, one who looks upon the long-term and does not shy away from facing the realities of striving for the greater good. Further meetings will see if that first impression holds, but I am optimistic.|
|Reese||He seems quite wise and calm. I think they were delaying us and he was right about that.|
|Sasha||Duke of House Malvici. Very charming and wonderful at entertaining guests within his home. I look forward to working with him upon this project|
|Sebastian||A man who truly knows how to drink with a zeal and committment that I have not seen from soldiers upon the battlefield. And with that goblet, he is fit to go to war against the vinyards of Arvum.|
|Shae||The Duke of Southport seems to be a rather amiable man, though he does not seem to have much regard for his gaggle of assistants and attendants. Always walking so fast, that they must almost run to keep up with him. A good alpha would be sure the whole pack could keep his speed. Perhaps it is time to find faster assistants and attendants. At the very least I hope he buys them good sturdy shoes. Though I am interested in learning more about this shark wrestling and master baker titles he seems to possess.|
|Sparte||I feel like he wants something from people, there was that sense the first time I met him. I admit with most people what they seem to want when I get that sense is something worthy of suspicion, but Duke Hadrian just seems to want human decency. I hope he finds it at every turn.|
|Stefano||Former duke of Southport, current Marquis of Ostria. Really saved us during a hunt, stepping in to deal with some forest folk.|
|Sunniva||The Marquis Mazetti is a man who resembles all that is good in the charitable notions of the peerage. He seems to genuinely care about the wants and needs to those unable to get the basics in life. It is my pleasure to join his organization and House Harthall will gladly pledge its support in any way we can. His own situation in life is something I am unfamiliar with though he seems to accept it despite his words. Strength through perseverance.|
|Thesarin||Lots of laughs. Lots of smiles. Lots of... life in him. But there's an edge in there too, how I reckon.|
|Zoey||I so wanted to like him.|
