Port Valerio

For over a year now, House Mazetti has been working under the careful direction of Marquis Hadrian and Marquessa Cambria to build a deep water port. Their people have caught on to the excitement, and with Lord Theron and Lord Vitalis helping, that makes things even more visible.

High Lord Victus and his Consort Alarissa, Princess Caelis who is herself from the Lyceum, Lady Ouida, Lady Katarina - a noted sailor herself - and Melosa Tagaris all help increase the visibility of this project. They make trade agreements, they make plans, they talk about it amongst themselves - and introduce the idea to others.

And then they announce the name - Port Valerio.

A Mazetti hero, a man who worked so hard for their family, for Mazetti - and eventually gave his life heroically fighting to protect others. Dying far from home, but an example of spirit and heart and bravery? It's an inspiration, and the work speeds up, and every worker takes a bit more pride in it, this symbol of the best of what it means to be Mazetti. Some even say he walks among them as a spirit, overseeing the work - certainly there are touches here and there that seem to be done just as he wanted.

When it is finally complete, the port is new and large and ready for business - business that will flow in as soon as the opening is at last announced. But the work is done and the Port is complete and ready to be used.

And then the storm comes.

It was a peaceful night, quiet and serene. And then the heavens opened up, or seemed to, and the skeleton crew manning the new Port Valerio hunkered down and prepared to weather what seemed to be the fury of the sea. All night it raged, rain and what seemed like hail punishing the walls of the port itself. Until the morning, that is. And when the sun broke the horizon and the day was new, the storm abated and they went out to assess the damage. Only to find out that it wasn't storm damage they had heard.

On the seaward wall of Port Valerio, facing out to greet the incoming ships, is a huge mural of General Valerio himself. Laid in mother-of-pearl and richly detailed, it shows the man writ large, his warhammer Mandate in hand, standing at attention in full ceremonial armor. Above him is the symbol of Mangata and a benediction - "Calm seas and trailing winds."
