Carnifex of the Faith

Sir Preston has been named Carnifex of the Faith, an ancient position that has not been held by any member of the Faith for centuries, and causes confusion among many Peers of the Realm and commoners alike that immediately ask, "what's a Carnifex?" The answer is often given by many white faced and alarmed looking scholars in the Great Archive who patiently explain that the position is created when the Church feels it is facing an existential threat that must be destroyed, usually with the implication that it's an internal threat that has to be purged and cut ruthlessly out of the heart of the Faith. This clarification is usually followed by godsworn Scholars of Vellichor reviewing every white journal they've ever written to see if anything could be interpreted as critical of the Faith.
Reaction is, to put it mildly, mixed. Most of the templars are glad to see their grandmaster given special authority to deal with the Eurusi crisis and any other threats that are arising. Most of the Knights of Solace are rather alarmed that the 'existential threat' is not very clearly defined outside of a general call for an invasion of Eurus by the templars. Scholars of Vellichor are generally alarmed, as a Carnifex being named usually was followed by many scholars finding themselves executed, and the Scholars have just dealt with a round of purges already. Outside of the Oathlands, most peers are generally concerned about the Faith becoming more powerful, but assume this is saber rattling and the position would just be for the duration of any conflict with the Dune Kingdoms. A surprising number of Lycene peers and mirrormasks praise the move, as it is a move shaking up the status quo and supports a Lycene dominus, giving Orazio far more power than any Lycene in the Faith has had in generations.
Of course, opinions might change rapidly depending on what Sir Preston does with the title.
Very rapidly.
