Fire on the Water

Perhaps during this war the ability to communicate is being lost, while the levels of bombast swell. There is a growing faction within this city that would rather rant about my people between themselves than come to talk to us. Unfortunately, the Faith's leadership has chosen to align to that in the past days, though my door has never been closed to their words.
Though I am sure the Dominus and Archlegate of Concepts had the best of intentions, what they have done is brought a broadsword where a butterknife would have done. Instead of condemning the specific actions of individuals, they have cruelly used every gods-fearing man, woman, and child of the Island-born people as an object lesson, painting all with the same bloody brush. They have isolated us, and as good as said that we are your enemies, we are not like you, we are fundamentally other.
We are not other. Not monsters, but men and women, every island and ship's hold unique, and here and now finding our way to who we truly are as through a heavy fog. Is there resistance to change? Of course. Even within my very own family. But Lagoma's hand burns across the water and in our hearts like a fever. I defy anyone to not recognize we are already doing things no one ever thought we'd do.
We have stood by the people of the mainland, fought with and for you, even in the shadow of a looming threat focused first on us. We have come to your aid even when you did not ask; you did not have to. We have worked to help govern and supply the Compact in crisis. We have resolved conflicts without civil war. We have freed our daughters to find their destinies, and have ended the practice of debt transference. Even now, our duchies begin to wrestle with their identities to solve this towering problem without ripping ourselves apart.
Many have done these things guided solely by their consciences. Do not spit upon their efforts, undertaken at no small personal risk, and expect them to believe you have their interests at heart. How can you claim to guide if you make huge swathes of people objects of ridicule, and push them over when they take their first steps?
If you would have lasting, stable, positive change in the Isles, then the price is patience and forbearance; for being Islanders, we are independent, fierce, and proud-- we will never embrace that which does not come from within. If you would see justice served, then you must say so when you see a wrong and give those with the means and authority the opportunity to do right, not punish all to censure the few.
And for the record, I happen to -like- smiling, and doing good works in Arx. Anyone who implies I should not or that I have have nefarious purpose in mind doing it may sit on a spear and shimmy down.
