On Inquisitorial Masks

Posted by Laric on 11/01/17
Citizens of Arx have always been able to identify the Inquisition's Confessors by their badges and half-masks. Few citizens have ever thought to ask why or what they signify. We believe a short history lesson is in order before our announcement today.

Over the centuries, the badge has never changed, bearing a stylized red flame to symbolize the Lady of Change's purifying fire and the potential of a soul's redemption. The masks began as visors. Like the Sentinel and justice itself, the Inquisition sought to be faceless, both to protect the identities of its membership from dark forces and to give the guilty ample warning.

Ample opportunity to confess.

Subsequent generations found the visor's design impractical for a variety of reasons including impeded vision, discomfort and a tendency to slip off. Several alternatives were tried until leadership settled on a half-mask over the lower face, obscuring not the eyes but the mouth, effectively serving the same purpose.

After recent events, the half-masks have been proven impractical in this day and age. From this hour forward, no member of our order, Confessor or Inquisitor, will obscure their face while going about their duties without good cause.
