Comments and Log

A pair of cooperative Shav prisoners have volunteered to guide the nine- now ten- longships toward the hidden islet where the ring of slavers keep a temporary camp to hold their slaves and choicest cargo until "the buyers" come to collect and pay out.

The two guides were kept in different ships to prevent collaboration, as the small fleet of longships strike out to the south-east by late afternoon, where the Mourning Sea is littered with myriad islets, most of which being too small to support any permanent population. The especially chatty Shav guide (Ava, who seems intent on thoroughly spoiling Rowenova's hound) explained that the Shav base is, "Deserted for most of the year. Haarfar needs to bring in fresh water and food to keep it supplied, so no one inside can run away, and no one outside comes looking, aye? Probably three or four ships on the beach, so.. three or four score warriors scattered about, all told. There were near fifty captives, when we set out. Isn't that right, mister ferocious guard dog? Yes, it is! Who's a good little ferocious guard dog? You are!"

While at sail for most of a day toward the hidden slaver outpost, the party had had time to formulate a plan, with Haakon's ship coming alongside near enough for the Prodigal to cross over and share in the developing scheme.

Sir Flop is in the adorable/soulful mode right now which ultimately belies how intensely ferocious he can be. He gazes up at Ava and gently wags, doing so with that gentle swish swish of his long tail behind him during all those lovely ear pets!

"We'll need to make sure they can't just do it again once we're gone," is Ian's main contribution. "Whatever we do is going to have to end in a fight, unless someone can figure out how to talk them into surrendering to face justice at Brighthold." His unspoken contribution is that he's in favor of the 'get 'em' strategy.

Wash has outlined three different plans and sounded out the captains on said plan on the largest longship over dinner. The feast includes all of the nobles involved. "My first idea I had was to sneak seven longships around the back of the island and unload the crews, armed, move them into striking distance of the compound. Then, we put our best crew in the longship, and have it row for the compound, the remaining two Tyde longships in pursuit. Ideally, they'll put their longships in the water to answer the threat. When they do, or as we get within bow shot of the compound, the land force engages, splitting their forces between land and sea."

"How good of a watch do they usually keep?" Ian asks Ava.

Gideon is standing to the side of Wash, listening as his eye wanders along the edge of his freshly sharpened axe. "I can join those men on the land. Probably ironic, but I'm better fighting on land than sea." The prince says simply, seemingly satisfied. A low grunt can be heard as he turns, as if his whole body creaks with the action, but he rolls his shoulders with the weight of the axe. "You don't talk to slavers any more than they ask for permission to enslave. Let's just wipe the bastards out, yea? Waste of fuckin' food if we take them in and imprison them, and people cry about the idea of enthralling them."

Seated somewhere and listening in at the noble dinner, Nova nods along after what is discussed, showing acknowledgement of the plan, but she does not say very much, herself, since all the good points have been brought up already.

Distracted from spoiling the dog for a minute, Ava looks up. "Hm? A watch? Not much of one. No one really knows where the camp is, aye? Besides, keeping a watch is boring as fuck, isn't it?"

Haakon eyes Wash with a nod. "If we set folk to land, we've got the numbers to storm them, direct. As you say: seven ships, with any throat-cutters-" sneaky folk, "And the rest into their landing. Main action cones from land, last two ships cut off any retreat. Sounds fit," the Prodigal agrees. Gideon's comments earn a dry half grin.

"Everyone deserves a chance at redemption," Zoey says to Gideon. "But in this case, talking could cost the lives of their prisoners, and they are the priority." She inches her mostly full plate away from her. "Any plan in which I can be useful, I am in favor."

Ian looks to Wash and Haakon. "Do either of you want command of the sea assault? If not, I'll do it."

"If there are no objections?" Wash asks, indicating that all of the captains who will risk their crew in this have a say. "

Haakon nods once to Ian. "I'll keep the two ships back what run down any that try to flee." Haakon's choice seems to be a bit of a sacrifice, as the other captains are eager to land and attack on foot. The consensus appears to be that the warriors on foot will decide everything, and lots are drawn to see which other captain will join Haakon in "watching".

The ships sail overnight, spotty clouds blotting out patches of noon and stars at times, and treating the noble passengers to the pleasures of sleeping on an open deck. The crews are experienced however, and bring the handful of longships through the straits and islets without foundering or being scattered, so as first light dawns in the east, the ten sails are drawing near to their target: an unremarkable little rise of sand and trees only a few miles long, and shaped like a fat horseshoe. From a distance there is nothing to distinguish it from any of the dozens of others they had passed to reach this point.

Gideon grimaces at the idea of a second chance for a slaver, but opts not to speak on the matter any further. Instead he bends over and grabs his helmet up from the deck beside him, tucking the diamondplate under his arm. "Just try not to get stabbed in the back." He says in a simple conclusion, his eye passing between the captains as Wash asks for objections. "The objective is to storm them, yes, but cutthroats and slavers have a special way of fighting, never be afraid of the one in front of you, be afraid of the one fighting your friend. These types like to focus on staying alive until their friends can stab you in the side. If they surrender, it's probably another ploy for time, everything is a distraction."

Since Wash is the defacto captain of the appropriated longship, it's obvious what role he will play in the endeavor.

Sliding into her diamondplate sabatons (but not the gauntlets for the rowing because that would be a giveaway), then the Nova nods back to Gideon after what he says. She leaves her recurve bow on the main ship and brings along an appropriated bow. She dresses like the shavs would dress and joins Wash with the soulful hound laying down out of eye sight behind her. She takes up the rowing work, apparently quite good at this kind of a thing.

Ian has the ability, learned over many years at war on land and sea, to sleep pretty much on command, and this he does, although only for a few hours. He's awake come dawn, and climbs a little ways up the mast just to get a good look at the island from some height. "They camp at the cove?"

Haakon had crossed back to his own longship once the plan was set.

Ava yawns, still sleepy and nods to Ian. "Mmhmm. Back of the cove, out of sight of open water." Seven ships strike sails and row toward the backside of the horseshoe, while Wash's captured command and a pair of his 'pursuers', make a slow course to round the cape and enter the cove, once their comrades have had time to land and advance.

Zoey has a bit more trouble sleeping than Ian does, and so when he wakes so does she. Mostly she stays back and out of the way while they make their approach.

Gideon has spent the long night awake, but set off with the seven ships to go to the cove. He wasn't said to be stealthy, not really, but the diamondplate didn't clank and grind like normal steel, not as much anyway. He sits quietly in wait for the time to come, his massive axe resting tightly in his hands after he slides down his helmet over his head. "Getting too old for this shit." He grumbles quietly, but there is still a tinge of excitement in his hollow tone.

Ian displays no particular emotion as he dons his armor, tying laces and buckling buckles by rote. The final thing he takes from his bag is his scarf, THE scarf, which he coils into loops like a whip and fastens at his belt.

Ian gets ugly, singed, stained, multicolor scarf from Oiled leather bag.

Those aboard the seven longships see the Tyde warriors drawing lots to see which 5 men from each ship are unlucky enough to remain with the vessels while their fellows get the chance for fighting and first crack at choicest plunder. The longships of the land party run up onto the sand, and as scouts take lead in picking through the trees, while the bulk of the warriors follow at a distance, unhurried to save energy for the expected fight ahead.

"Stay tight, fight as they do if it becomes open conflict." Gideon mutters, naturally he remained with the bulk of the warriors. His axe rests on his shoulders as they trudge across the sand. "Stay in pairs, your life is in the hands of the one next to you, and his is in yours. Keep that in mind and you're likely to come out of this alive." He instructs firmly without looking back, his eye dead set on the path ahead and the fighting to come. "No prisoners unless you're commanded to start taking them. They'll probably try and shank you."

Wash has donned the armor and hat of one of the shav sailors and stands at the tiller as it approaches.

Ian keeps himself out of easy sight for the approach, lost in the group of sailors on board to the point where his superior armor isn't going to stand out.

Zoey keeps her sharkskin leathers hidden under a cloak to avoid notice, and likewise stays back. Bows are a ranged weapon anyway, so being too close is a needless risk. When in doubt, she looks to Ian or Wash.

After a nod to Gideon about the first 2 pieces of what he said there, then the daring duo of Scout Rowenova and Sir Floppington slink out amongst all the island trees. The human being of the apparent pair slips on her DP gauntlets and brings down the best pick of the shav bows that she could find out of the prior mix. She draws out a red arrow with black feathering, though, which is soon nocked before she stealths further with Sir Floppington in shadows near.

The timing is excellent.

As the scouts come into sight of the camp, the former Shav ship is gliding round the tip of the horseshoe toward the shallows at the interior curve with the two Tyde ships in pursuit. A quartet of similar vessels are drawn up on the sand, and a number of cooking fires can be seen burning on the beach, or among the trees, A few shelters from rain and sun can be seen, made from discarded sailcloth strung between trees, but no true buildings.

At first, the prisoners are nowhere to be seen, only the dozens of Shavs either sleeping, waking, or eating, and a brief fear that they were too late might take root. However, the truth is revealed to all except Gideon, who has found a tree.

A large square pit has been dug into the sandy soil, twenty paces wide and as deep as a tall man, its walls reinforced with palmetto logs and a flat cage of saplings and stout reeds placed atop the open pit. Crowded inside the reeking hole are at least four dozen people. Open to weather and without facilities, the prisoners crouch or sit in foul and soiled sand, most are men, a few women, and- as a frightened cry makes clear- at least one child. An alarm is raised from the shore as someone has spotted the incoming ships.

Wash commences with a ballyhoo and deception to convince the defenders that his ship is being pursued, not words per se, but a lot of manic pointing.

"This is the place, all right," Zoey says softly to those around her. "I see some of the stolen cargo. I know a good brocade when I see it."

Nova slips back and makes sure that Gideon is quietly updated before then slipping away. She does not really like the immediate situation of all those suffering prisoners, but it might be the safest place for them right now. Unless there is a trap set to somehow hurt the hostages taken beyond what has already been done to them. She looks for anything of that nature, as well as however many people that she and Flop need to take out before they can make a guard of the zone.

Ian keeps his head down while Wash does his 'slaver being chased by Tyde ships' impression. He makes sure Zoey is placed as far from where the fighting on the ship is likely to be as is possible on such a small ship, and tasks a couple of guys specifically with guarding her.

Tie them up at sea.

Wash checked command + sailing at difficulty 30, rolling 43 higher.

As the two longships pass each other in the entrance of the cove, Wash throws the tiller hard over and yells out: "Now!" At this prearranged signal, the two hulls grate together, and the dangerous dance at sea begins.

The first Shav longship to launch meets an u pleasant surprise as Wash's signal results in grappling irons being thrown across and tied off, locking the two ships together with the crack and snap of splitting oars, and shouts of alarm as the first arrows fly, and the boldest warriors seek to be the first over the rails and into the enemy ship.

When she hears Wash yell what he yells out there, Nova brings up a signal to her fellow scouts and points out the three who are chieftans before then apparently claiming the blonde man as she brings up her shav bow with the Halfshav arrow in it and then takes aim. Sir Floppington skirts the shadows, trying to find something smart to do which will enable the rescue mission.

As the ships grapple, Ian moves quickly across the deck; he's notoriously uncertain on his feet on the deck of a ship, but he seems to have an innate understanding of everything around him, such that he can always find something (or someone) to use to steady his balance when he needs to. "Let's finish this!" He draws his rubicund sword and leads the shipboard assault, looking to target whoever seems to be in charge. Not that it's easy to tell.

Zoey has babysi-guards. She has guards, which means instead of watching her own back she can watch Ian's as he darts into the fray. When she spots a spear leveled threateningly at him, it is a fluid motion of nock-aim-loose that neutralizes it. She lets out her breath while she steadies her nerves and readies another arrow.

Ian bowls straight through a couple of people as he forces his way onto the ship, straight into the thick of the fighting, trusting in his armor and his almost preternatural spatial awareness to protect him. One of the people he smashes into ends up on the ground with Ian scrambling, but on his feet (and not impaled with a spear, so that's good). His electric blue eyes are eerily serene as he cuts his way to the captain, his sword flashing dark red in the morning sun, and not from the color of the metal, this time. "CAPTAIN!" He makes sure the captain is facing him before he engages. Not that it makes any difference. He gets past the slaver's guard like it's not even a thing.

Gideon waits patiently, his hands adjusting on the long handle of the axe until the arrows of the scouts start to fly out at the chieftains. "Stay close, remember to stick with your partner!" He shouts then as the fighting starts, charging forward with a deep, guttural roar. The behemoth of diamondplate makes a straight charge towards the other chiefs as Nova fires, his hollow breath panting already from the blood rush and adrenaline that starts to pump while he lifts his axe. One might note that he didn't follow his own rules, he has no battle buddy.

After that first arrow sockets into the leg of the blonde chieftan, then the Halfshav scout smoothly nocks another arrow as she strafes sideways amidst the palm trees and whatever shadows and cover they can give before aiming again, hopefully covering Gideon if he has no partner with the second arrow.

In the cove, the Shav captain is struck hard enough that his shoddy shield is hewed apart and Ian's Rubicund bites into the Shav's forearm. Taking a two handed grip of his trident, the violent thrust narrowly misses Ian's throat.

Ashore, the sudden shock of coming under attack from the trees has sent several Shav warriors running for the boats, and the others brandishing weapons to fight back. There are other, easier targets still threateningly close though, so she aims and fires at one of them instead. Her arrow strikes true, but as she reaches into her quiver for her next arrow a shav arrow comes whistling her way. It should have gone through her shoulder. Thank the gods her treated sharkskin is stronger than that.

Ian dodges both forward and to the side, so that when the trident is thrust past him, allowing him to get a grip on the haft of the weapon with his free hand. With the trident trapped and under his partial control, however briefly, he jerks himself towards he captain and uses said forward momentum to smash the basket hilt of his sword straight into the man's face. Then the captain manages to get control of his trident again, throwing Ian away from him and trying to run him through on the riposite. But it's the sort of thing Ian was able to see coming, and so he just isn't there.

Gideon raises his axe heavily above his head as he charges in, resulting in quite the sight for scout Rowenova behind him. The massive alacrite axe is swung down into the chief's neck. severing easily at first and dragging down through the unsuspecting man until it gets stuck in the pelvis of his unsuspecting victim. The prince releases one hand from the axe, delivering a brutal swing from his metal clad hand to knock that half of the corpse from his blade, the crimson spray darkening his shining diamondplate. However at that moment he doesn't see the other chief, who gives hardly a scratch with the hit across Gideon's back. The man turns, flicking some of the blood and tissue from the axe as he lets out another roar at the chief who came to strike him.

From his position at the stern of his ship, Wash is removed from the conflict. He leaves his post at the tiller only if an opportunity to cripple the other ship's mobility arises. Otherwise, he directs the sailors and defends himself.

When Gideon is attacked, Nova lets loose another arrow, and that sinks into the person who tried to waylay the Prince. Sir Floppington suddenly seems to somehow materialize out of thin air as he bolts out from behind one of the shavastic tents and then suddenly grabs the blonde chieftess by the calf and yanking her off her feet before trying to drag her some more, and some more, toward the tree line.

At sea, two dozen Tyde warriors have gained the enemy deck after Ian. Veterans of such fights, they make a habit of dumping mortally wounded Shavs over the rails to avoid blood and clutter clogging the deck or rowing benches they're fighting over. The chieftain with the trident takes a second harsh wound and gasps for breath before snarking, "Brekspar!" and trying valiantly to impale the sword of Stormward.

Ashore, it's going no better. Heavily outnumbered and watching one of their heroes dragged off her feet by SUDDEN DOG, while another falls into splattered viscera by Gideon, a dozen run to join the second Shav ship, which sets to sea in haste, leaving dozens of Shavs behind to struggle with a still beached longship. The Shavs make a break for open water, but quickly find two more Tyde ships waiting for them. One last chieftain stands, rallying the last handful of warriors around him, despite the pair of arrows jutting out of his body.

The captain forces Ian away with a few wild swings of his trident, and Ian isn't able to get back in under his guard, but neither can the captain (or anyone else in the fight) is able to hit him, either. Maybe it's his odd, stumbling gait, the way he sometimes overbalances, catches himself on a line, swings around it. That's a lot of unexpected motion to keep up with. In situations like this, where he can assist his movement with his off-hand, Ian is surprisingly fast.

Gideon turns as the arrowed chief tries to rally his men. The prince swings from the side, arcing his entire body as the axe goes flying past just a little short. Depth perception has won this time, but the prince readies his axe again, a low growl rumbling in his helmet as the blood drips from the visor, which turns to scan among the rallying shavs, preparing for another ambush to come from them. "Come on!" He screams at them, slamming a bloodied fist against the side of his helmet in challenge to the slavers.

Shav chief with sword 50 inflicted and Gideon is harmed for moderate damage.

Woop! Wash had his attention on the ship battle, and that arrow from the shore almost parted his hair. He drops into a squat at the last minute and when he straightens up he salutes the unknown shooter with his blade.

The blonde chieftress goes for a belt knife... Nova shouts out, "NO you DON'T!" Darting out from the tree cover, she runs up to the mauled woman before the final stride is a firm planting with one boot before its diamondplated twin swings up and cracks violently into the woman's hand, effectively sending the small blade flying away and wrist bones into a mangled mess. Reaching down, Nova neck grabs that same shav, or tries to, to help out Sir Flop with the dragging action.

A crushed wrist will spoil your whole day. The dog-fighting Shav war chief screams in pain as her hand is mangled, a scream that cuts off only when Rowenova grabs her by the throat. At sea, the trident-wielding captain is still alive and fighting, but as more of his crew are killed or leap overboard to try their chances in the bloody water, the captain decides that the weight of his iron shirt isn't reason enough to remain on the deck while surrounded, and once Ian dodges backwards from his last thrust, the Shav captain throws his trident after the Sword of Stormward, and vaults over the rail with his healthy arm, falling onto the sea with a splash.

Only one dangerous foe remains: the fair haired swordsman who is trading roaring swings with the fire splattered axeman in diamondplate.

As the captain dives into the water, Ian sidesteps the flying trident and neatly plucks it out of the air like someone had just sorta handed it to him. Then he turns and hoists it over his head and raises his voice to a boom trained to carry over the sounds of a fight: "YOUR CAPTAIN HAS FLED! DROP YOUR WEAPONS AND SURRENDER!"

"Thus to pirates!" Wash agrees, spitting over the side of the boat.

Gideon raises his arm up as the chief swings back, choosing a chop to his arm over one to his neck as he's far too big and heavy to dodge. The chief's sword actually digs in to the arm plating, and a trail of red runs onto the blade. The prince pushes forward, ignoring the pain as he tries to swing his axe with the other hand, but it's far too large for one handed uses, causing the slow swing to be easily avoidable. "Bastard..." The prince grumbles shaking his injured arm a little, which is now too dripping on the ground.

After neck grabbing the blonde woman, Nova simply flings her mauled body back toward the tree line. Sir Flop ultimately causes the short slack, though, due to his maw's grip upon the woman's calf, and so she flops 180 degrees from where she originally started. Afterwards, she spins away and rushes up to ultimately flank for Gideon versus the blonde man currently harrying him.

Sir Floppington lets go of the calf hold and then pounces atop blonde lady, doing so with a fierce snarl right at face level.

Beset on both sides and bleeding profusely from a pair of deep wounds, including an arrow lodged in his thigh, the last of the Haarfar chieftains is fighting in a crowing circle of Arvani foes. Meanwhile, the rest of the camp is being cleared, some few raiders have found the stockpile of brocades. Priorities!

Others have begun clearing the stones that weigh down the lattice cage set down over the pit, and tossing the barrier aside. Perhaps understandably, the four dozen miserable prisoners are unsure if their lot has improved as they see a number of bloody raiders shouting for them to get out.

The shav was fast for a man with arrows in him, much to Gideon's dismay as another monstrous swing missed it's intended target just barely. He was panting now, from the mix of moving and bleeding, even if the crimson that painted him mostly wasn't his own. As yet another arrow thuds in from Rowenova, the prince takes a moment to look around at the rounding up of the survivors, and slowly his axe lowers down to rest on his shoulder. "That was fuckin' fast." He mutters in disappointment, looking down on the fallen chief.

Wash grounds the second longship onto the shore and starts conducting the sorting of prisoners and ex-prisoners.

Ian is considerably less mobile on a sandy beach than he is on a ship. He stumbles as he makes his way over to Gideon, at one point actually going down to his knees and having to use his cane to push to his feet again. But he gets there. "How much of that blood is yours?" The way his gaze is drawn to Gideon's arm makes it clear that he can tell the other man is hurt.

The Tyde warriors on the shore are distinctly less encouraging of surrender as an option than the Kennex, and the shallows grow ruddy in short order. The camp is secured, those who were imprisoned in the pit tentatively begin to emerge, once it becomes clear that they aren't being shackled and dragged off, and several choose to set upon the abandoned breakfasts of the Abandoned, eating as if half starved. Others huddle together warily, looking among their liberators.

When she reaches the shore, Zoey goes to help with the newly-freed prisoners. They might be more comforted by the gentle voice of a Lady. "Everything will be fine now," she assures them. "We have come to take you home."

After running up on the bleeding shav, Nova backhands him with diamondplate which encases her arm which drops him. Then, she grabs him and drags him back to where Sir Flop has the other blonde. They get to lay in the sand together. After leaving them side by side, one unconscious and the other intimidated by the good boy, Nova moves to help the others with the prisoners for now.

Gideon looks over at Ian as he hobbles and falls across the beach. "Just this." Gideon answers, raising his arm. The diamondplate was indeed cut there, but it was also the hand he used to punch half a chief off his axe, the mess went from fist to near pauldron. "Not the best example." He corrects, coming to terms with just how messy that first bit was. He takes a moment to look back at the first victim as he peels his helmet off, breathing in the fresh air instead of the inside of his damp helmet, letting it hang from a strap as he pulls his flask up from his hip. "You look in one piece though, guess it went well over there yea?"
