Comments and Log

The Isles of the East Wind were newly turned Prodigal territory, for the most part. There were some stretches of water that still had not been fully explored by Arvani navigators, and it was one such stretch of sea and shore which a voyage had set out to explore, and scout out possible sites for a new deep-water port and shipyard. The expedition numbered three Eswynd longships escorting one sizable Tyde cog.

It was past midday as the ships hove near to a chain of islets the Prodigals called the Leviathan's Reach, though one would struggle to guess the hour, as an unseasonable mist hung heavy over the waters, obscuring visibility. The ships kept contact by sounding horns periodically, but scouting out a shoreline under such conditions was nigh impossible, and the flotilla had started to move out to open waters, rather than risk unknown shallows. Those aboard the cog are jostled suddenly as the ship under half sail abruptly slows and lurches to port, before the rudder corrects. It feels odd to veteran sailors: not running aground, or striking a shoal, the ship continues movement, but.. much more slowly, and dragging to the left.

"What the..." Zoey looks up from her sketchbook where she is working on her next idea for her favorite seamstress after her charcoal lurches across the page in an unintended stroke. "This doesn't feel normal. Anyone know what's happening?"

As the Voice of Tyde, Archeron has got himself set up on the Cog - and being Archeron he has been up in the rigging and watching things. As the judder threatens to send him below, he grips onto the robes before scurying down to the deck, grateful for his rough gloves "What in the name of Mangata was that nonsense?" The archer asks as he stalks up the stairs to the aftcastle desk. "Beyond my own trafic demise, Margot will hardly be happy if we wreck one of these things. Damned expensive."

Emily is busying herself with her bow, checking the strength and standing up to give it a dry pull without release when the ship suddenly rocks and she has to spread her legs to keep from toppling. The string is released and she curses below her breath but straightens up as she slowly moves over to the left side, bow still in hand as she rests her free one on the side of the ship to peer over the side. "What do you think that was?" She wonders aloud, tilting her chin up as she leans further, peering into the waters.

Sitting with her back to the mast on the cog, Sorrel looks the least likely sailor. She doesn't know what's wrong with the ship; if she needs to stab something, someone will let her know.

Aedric Blackshore is a superstitious man. Needless to say, when the ship slows and he cannot immediately identify a visible landmass or equivalent explanation, an icy shudder runs down the length of his spine. He, like Emily, peers overboard in search of any watery obstruction or damage to the vessel. Somehow, he maintains an austere countenance.

"Someone get a plumb line into the water and check depth, make sure we aren't on a sand bar..." Archeron barks at the crew "And get someone below, check the...." it's then that Archeron leans over the side of the ship and looks at the side of the ship "Something on the hull!" he curses, waving back "Down on the left side - get out the damned hooks."

Haakon had been toward the prow of the cog when it slowed, peering over the front rail before looking back with a look of confusion. When Archeron descends, the Prodigal hollers, "No sand bars, no shallows.. Keel didn't jump. Unless we're carrying a fucking sand bar along with us, we should have either stopped or picked back up." When Archeron barks out, he peers over the side, hastily. "Fuck. FUCK. Blighted bloody Anchorfish."

"Do we have a long enough oar to possibly push it off or strike it to discourage its attachment?" Massive fish are not her thing but she does glance for a while. "Its just along for the ride but...this is going to take forever for us to get anywhere. We have to be rid of this hitchhiker." she remarks and turns her head as Haakon calls out about the fish. "And how do we get them off exactly?" She is already reaching for an arrow. Answer to EVERY problem.

She will not be much help in all likelihood, but while other's rush to follow Archeron's order's Zoey looks over the side, charcoal and sketchbook still in hand. "Anchorfish?" she asks, looking back at Haakon.

Anchorfish. Maybe it had mistaken them for a whale or some large predator. If left unattended, it could damage the hull and would contribute to the duration of their travels. "We could chum the waters and give it a suitable host," Aedric muses, doubting they were armed with anything large enough to damage the creature's hide. "I would save your arrows," he continues, shifting gaze to neighboring archer.

Haakon gives a terse exhale and nod to Zoey, "Anchorfish. Stories go they used to latch onto sea dragons, and feed off the big beastie's kills." A dry look goes aside to Emily. "Firstly, cogs don't carry oars. Second- he's right," a nod to Aedric. "That far under water? No arrow gonna bite it. And I like bloodying up the waters, but we've no bloody meat." The Eswynd hollers for one of the crew to bring his harpoon. "And a long fucking rope!" before he begins to shed shield, cloak, and armor.

"Oh, the arrow will get there, but it might nudge it." Archeron admits from the railing, his own bow sitting on his back "You might want to get people on the rope, Haakon. You don't want to lose a damn harpoon anymore than we want to lose the ship. Waste not, want not and all that."

Zoey notices Haakon stripping down. "You are not getting in the water with it, are you? Is that not dangerous?"

"The ship's wake will drag you under if you get in the water with it," Sorrel points out with a little shake of her head, her hand on the hilt of her sword. "It's a bad idea. You might be able to throw a harpoon into it, but will that really be much of a deterrent for the creature?"

Aedric wordlessly assists Haakon with unbuckling and unfastening his armor, should he permit it. The articles are then stacked neatly beside a nearby crate. He could think of no other practical means of removing the beast absent a dive.

"You mean to say you have no back up oars in case they are needed? Just something long," Emily continues and then narrows her gaze. The arrow had not quite left her quiver as it drops back in quickly with a soft sound of finality. A sigh leaves her lips and she nods to Aedric before she turns to note Zoey's question. Then she sees Haakon and the ranger comes up to straighten and tilt her head. "I suspect Lord Eswynd has had enough experience with them that he might know the best way...even if it seems foolhardy." Supporting him in her own way she moves closer to the Eswynd, giving him a look before she turns about.

Haakon shrugs to Archeron, "Give it a shot, aye? Arrows away, by all fucking means. Otherwise-" another shrug to Zoey, "Only if you lot don't pull me back up. And slow as we're going? No wake to speak of," is added to Sorrel. "Truth be told, I'm not eager for this, so if'n you've another thought, by all bloody means, go on with it, aye?" Archeron's caution of waste not gets a nod, and Haakon unfastens his belt to slide the ring on his harpoon's chain onto the strap.

Haakon gives a nod and grunt of thanks to Aedric at the other's assistance.

"Mmph. If you want a try, Haakon. By all means." Archeron pulls the rubicund bow from his back and nocks an arrow. Lining up the shot he moves back and fires the bow - the arrow though seems to just snap on contact with the water "Mmph. Wrong angle. Ah well. Might distract him."

"Why do they latch on to ships like this?" Zoey asks after Emily's arrows do not deter the creature. "If we know its motivations, perhaps we can convince it to find a better option."

Watching Archeron nock his arrow and release it into the waters, Emily leaves over to get a look. Moving to the side of the ship again she draws her arrow and fluidly nocks and pulls to the creak of her bowstring. She hooks her foot and leans over the edge just a little as she strains, shaking. A breath held and the arrow is let loose as she can see the one of three parts of her fletching in brilliant red, a cardinal feather, in the water. Stuck fast into the creature. "Hit but nothing..and what are you going to do then?" She glances to Zoey, "Likely think its some sort of large fish...so food."

Aedric nods in response to the ranger's speculation. "We're food. Not dealing with the brightest of species, mind you. No different than a vulture or parasitic worm."

Haakon watches the shots with interest, peering over the side and grumbling under his breath when even an impressive shot from Emily fails to get the massive fish's attention. "Shit," is his eloquent commentary. A shrug to Zoey. "Mayhaps because they're fucking stupid and think we're a sea dragon," the Prodigal guesses. "And on the subject of fucking stupid-" Down to trousers and a belt, he ties the rope onto the stout leather strap, and tosses the length of rope toward Aedric. "Pick some stout lads and keep hold of that, aye? Mayhaps tie it onto something.

Blackshore does as instructed, accepting the rope and calling for capable crewmen to assist him in holding the line steady. He winds the material around his waist, confident that the weight of his platemail would permit a steady anchor should Haakon require a rapid retreat.

Haakon waits until Aedric and the others have a good, solid (very solid) grip on the line, before adding a stygian torc to the pile of his otherwise very common gear. Drawing and releasing a deep breath, he vaults the waist rail and dives into the water, harpoon in hand.

This is a very bad idea.

While attention is on that side of the ship, awaiting the results of the dive, a choice few notice sounds from the other side of the ship: a light, rhythmic splashing, at first, with a single creak of timber.

The oars. Wait...they had not oars. Despite wanting to watch Haakon and be ready to help pull him out she turns her head up and narrows her gaze. "Does anyone else hear that?" She asks of those near her, but her hand goes back to the railing of the boat and seems like she might be quick to follow the Eswynd into the water should he find trouble. Little does she know that there are other boats on the way, her focus is far too narrowed.

Archeron pulls his lower lip under his teet and whistles to get attention as he catches glimpse of the boats out in the distances. He gestures at the others, the whistle to try and get their attention "Might want to forget the fish issues for now." He says, having gone to the other side of the ship "I'd also suggest getting down against the railing in case they have archers. Seems the prodigals which to play." The archer carefully nocks an arrow and looks over the rail, intent on loosing an arrow once they are within range.

Zoey wields Dawn's Light, an alaricite bow.

Between Emily's inquiry and Archeron's warning, Aedric knew to prepare for the worst. Although somewhat preoccupied with keeping hold of the rope, Haakon's only lifeline, he wraps the braid around his left arm and draws longsword with his dominant hand -- tip of blade dipped in a low guard.

Zoey looses her arrow after taking careful aim through the fog, though what became of whomever it hit she could not be certain under such conditions. Only thing left to do is ready the next shot.

As the others draws her attention from the Eswynd in the water, she's not ready. Not at all. She pulls the arrow too quick, did not hold her breath to steady her shot so as it goes, she jerks slightly and the thunk of the arrow is heavy as it hits the side. She hisses below her breath and starts to draw close to Aedric to help cover the rope and the Lord holding it when the arrow flies back her way. She twists out of the way and her dark curls feel the bite of the arrow, watching it land on the deck behind her with a wild look from her blue eyes. She narrows her gaze and is ready to draw and shoot her next.

As the first of the long ships comes into range, Archeron is already tracking ahead of it to judge its speed before he lifts his bow up to get range, even as he still tracks ahead. With an exhaled breath, he looses the arrow, staying up a little longer than he perhaps should to see whether it strikes, finally only ducking down as an arrow thuds into the wood near him "Mmph. Would that Gideon were here. I shall have to note that is one." He looks back over the railing as he nocks another arrow "And all is a game - just sometimes for very high stakes. There are rules, and exceptions, and sometimes people wish to ignore tham all."

The lethal effect of the arrows from the Tyde cog make it painfully clear to the attackers that surprise has been lost, and a shout is raised from the four pirate vessels, which redouble their rowing speed. A volley of arrows is sent from the approaching boats in return, with multiple darts sticking into the timbers of hull, railing, or deck. The attackers are much lower in the water than the taller deck of the cog, but they have a significant advantage in numbers.

As grappling irons are thrown across, the first of the longships slams into the cog, in a sharp jostle that threatens the balance of all those aboard. A sudden and desperate boarding action follows.

In a fluid motion Zoey draws, nocks, and looses another arrow, but when she sees they are being boarded she decides it is time to retreat to somewhere safer. Pausing only to stuff her book into her bag, she makes for the stairs to the aft castle.

Sorrel wields Resonant Edge, a lightly curved diamondplate saber.

Archeron readies another arrow and, leaning up over the railing he fires it off into one of the individuals with a grappling hook to slow down the boarding. The arrow loosed, he stays up for only a moment to see it thud home before he ducks back down to load it up "We'll accept your surrender anytime you want to stop dying." He bellows out.

Emily sees Aedric lose his footing and drop the rope. As it starts to side away she dives down for she is right there and grabs at it, her bow hitting the deck as her hands grip it at first. Her feet brace her against the edge of the boat and even as she tugs and manages to slow the slide of the rope, she grits her teeth. "HELP HERE!" She calls out, but soon its running through her hands and she winces as her skin burns ands he can't keep a full hold on it.

Gideon HAD been trying to get some beauty sleep in, or something of the sort. Regardless, the prince has been in his quarters, strapping on his plates in somewhat of a rush. Yes, a pauldron may be a bit crooked, but that's unimportant. A mass of diamondplate bursts out onto the deck, an alacrite axe heavily lying in his hand as his eye locks on to the nearest thing that he didn't remember being on this ship when he went to sleep earlier; an unsuspecting pirate. Charging across the deck and into the fray, the axe swings up in an overhead arc, an act people that aren't this pirate might know not to try and parry. Instead the axe head smashes down through the attempted meddling, burying itself into the pirates shoulder. "Can I not nap in peace?!" Gideon barks, someone's cranky.

Sorrel is dodgy and stabby, even when she takes a hit. She's fierce and flamboyant and totally dramatic, practically dancing with her sword.

Zoey finds her higher ground, a relatively safe place, but not quite safe enough. One enemy arrow finds her, piercing the leather protecting her shoulder, but thankfully not the skin beneath. She utters something under her breath, pulls it out, and gets ready for the next shot.

Archeron tries to dodge the borders as they come closer, two of them on him. He starts backtracking, but caught between be can't dodge either fully. Thankfully shagrin armour and thick bear hide catch the blades, even as he pulls his large two handed woodsman's axe from his back.

With the deck having descended into chaos and Aedric's attention upon the rapidly retreating rope, he is almost completely vulnerable. The moment he recovers from being knocked prone, a shortsword pierces his breastplate and he cries out in pain. Although the blow was likely not fatal, the risk of uncontrolled bloodloss and infection grew exponentially. This was the price of his altruism.

Emily's grip on the rope is lost even though her skin begins to sting when those blows come in at her from the boarding pirates. She curses loudly and dips back and away, keeping out of their reach as she dances from foot to foot, moving her way back towards the rope. Aedric is hit and she detours, grasping at the bow off the ground to grab for her arrows in an attempt to end the lives of those trying to make their job harder. "Back off!" She cries.

Kicking away the pirate he'd chopped, Gideon finally takes in the situation of the deck more completely. There's a ping on his blind side as a dagger clanks harmlessly across his armor, gaining his attention to deflect the next as it punctures through, resulting in a scratch. "Shit show." He grumbles, grimacing under his helmet at the two archers locked in melee.

One of the belaguered crew of the Tyde cog sounds one of the signal horns three times, rapidly. Though out of sight in the fog, it is answered quickly by the vessel's escorts, from ahead and behind. The bloody melee on the deck grows more desperate, as one of the pirate ships- decimated by arrow fire- draws off, leaving the contest very much in dispute..

With her bow in hand, the sharp sting of the rope burn most definitely causes her to some grief but it helps focus her. Gideon finally sets his eyes over Archeron who seems to be set into an uncomfortable melee. The prince dashes across the deck, away from the other pirates and swings his axe down at the pursuers. Instead of the usual blood and filth, woodchips fly up to find his plate instead. Seeing that the pirate dodged back, the prince comes back to a stand, glaring at the pirates before his head slightly turns to speak back at Archeron. "Not too hurt to shoot are ya?" He utters, yanking the axe back up into a two-handed grip.

Having seen Emily's arrow drop the man responsible for his injury, Aedric offered the woman a thankful nod after dispatching another of the brutes.

Archeron nudges the fighters in front of him with his axe as he slowly keeps backtracking. A wide swing finds nothing but air, but buys him some time to step back again and try to find some space. As Gideon comes over, Archeron nods his head "Glad you could join us, a bit of a snafu - seems some freelance fellows. Don't see Cousin Reveka's flag." he says, panting a little.

The advantage of numbers wanes sharply as the defenders weather the initial onslaught and push back at the boarders with bloody resolve. By now there are a dozen dead and dying bodies in the black salt water, and the thick fog makes the echoes of horn blasts reverberate ominously as the Tyde longships draw nearer. As the first pirate boat abandons the fight it is followed by another, and as the assault on deck had clearly stalled, the cog shudders and bobs in the water as a great weight releases from it's underside; the colossal Anchorfish detaches to begin feeding, leaving the surviving pirates to flee abruptly for the rails, in desperate hopes of escape.

Zoey breathes a sigh of relief as the other ships retreat and pushes a handful of curls out of her eyes. "How is everyone down there?" she calls down toward the deck.

Emily glances upwards at the call from Zoey. "Lord Eswynd is still in the water..and we have injured down here. I have only a rudimentary hand at healing." She admits and then is quick to offer up. She turns back, setting down her bow to go for the rope and try to help pull the Lord back in - hoping that he might still be on the end of it and not lost.

Gideon snorts at Archeron's welcome as the pirates start to make their retreat. If his armor wouldn't sink him to the bottom of the sea, maybe he'd follow them. "Didn't wake up until I heard fighting, send someone next time." He insists in a half-joking manner as he sets his bloodied axe to rest up on that crooked pauldron. Hearing Zoey call out, he turns and looks across the deck. "Aedric got shanked." He calls back as he notes the man by the rope. The rope? He notes finally that the two have been fighting to hold that. He trudges over, his metal clad hand coming to try and take over the rope from them. "Rest Aedric, you did good."

With the attackers in full flight back to their mist-shrouded island cove, and the Anchorfish wallowing in its (sometimes still screaming) meal, this is one nautical ambush which do d not turn out as its perpetrators had hoped. While a follow up attack to purge the nest might be prepared later, for now the party is safe.. even if there are a goodly number of arrowheads and blood stains to be removed from the deck of Margot's cog.

"Do what you can for him, and pull Lord Haakon out of the water before he gets eaten too," Zoey replies. "At least the ship is still in one piece."

From over the side, a terse voice hollers, "I leave for *one* fucking minute!"

Glancing up at Zoey, the rope in her hands that she is already hauling now that Gideon is there to help, Emily drags heavily upon it. The voice that follows as the rope strains she laughs. There is a relieved smirk and she grumbles to herself after. She does not give up the tugging and gathering up the rope until Haakon is on board.
