Relationship Note on Sigurd

Under the large, old trees, there are many graves, marked by mounds of earth. In these graves, the ordinary, simple country folk of the village are buried. The sights, sounds, and smells of a country morning can no longer greet those who have died. They may have wielded great promise or potential. Someone may have had the strength, courage, and leadership to conquer and rule a great kingdom. But extreme poverty held back their deep feelings and their creativity. One villager may have had the genius of a poet but could not write and so remained unknown.

Who has ever accepted that he will be forgotten? Who leaves the warmth of earthly life without any regret? Those who are dying need to know that someone loves them and will weep when they are gone. After we are dead, our tombs are reminders of the human desire to be remembered.

Relationship Note on Sigurd

I might not always win a fight. In fact, I rarely do, but when I do.... at least it's when it really matters.

It was truly a pleasure, Sigurd.

A warm acceptance of my invitation. How lovely! I'm rather smitten by intelligence, especially when it is accompanied by charm and skill. How blessed I am to often meet and know such people. How I cannot wait to become better acquainted with more. Truly enchanting. ~~~<~<@

( From the desk of B. Mercier, Steward: )

Cold winds blow against the hill,
With frost across the plain.
Away, Winter soon will go--

Yet, I wait with patience still.
Knowing Spring with come again--
Leaving violets 'neath the snow.

I think, just because a few of us decide to note here, in these records our memories of those that have departed, it does not mean that we have all stalled and become unstuck. That we do not readily stick the hideous flesh of our enemies with our blades when the need arises.

It is important to pay tribute to the dead. The memories are still green and that it is normal to bear our hearts in grief and Arx to be contracted in one brow of woe. Let us wear the fallen in our heart's core. In our heart of hearts, as we get on with our business of destroying our enemies.

I find myself in agreement with this Eirene person.

We face dark times and more will perish. Mourn them, hold them in your hearts. Then wait and when confronted by an enemy of the Compact, stick that bastard in the chest with the memory of your loved one guiding your blade.

The Compact faces many foes and those that fall in its defense will be numerous. There are many who have already fallen who's names many of us do not know. Let us not forget them as wel move forward in our endeavors.

Fair seas and clear skies will once again be the future of the Compact, but until then let us remain ever vigilant.

Marriage. Beyond the debtors, that is what my father has insisted upon the most. It is my duty, one that Sigurd, despite his numerous successes with women, cannot fulfil. It is my own task, the task of the firstborn who must continue the line. He insists that I speak to Nadia on the matter. Hopefully something will happen at the capital to distract him.

Thank you. Thank you all for the kind words. Horatio was not simply a cousin but I considered a close friend and trusting business partner. Through out the years I learned to leave him be and when he was ready he would come get me. It was a relationship that work brilliantly and one that I feel will never be replaced. I did not just loose a cousin or a friend, I lost part of the Mercier. Still as we must put our feelings aside and wake up the next morning to toil the land and watch the crop, for we must feed the masses. Horatio, you are now one with ground where-ever you are but you will never be forgotten.

It has been a long couple of days. Beyond the drills and training. What little I have in way of a personal life has been restless and confusing.

To top it off, my bunk mate will not stop snoring.

I have a lion at least, I keep it close, and it keeps me company.

Relationship Note on Niccolo

Okay, I was called away in the midst of writing that last entry. Let me try again.

You know the tales of gallant and dignified Dukes? I'm almost certain they were written based off of Duke Niccolo. We met to discuss recent happenings in the realm, and I left feeling as though I had found someone I could turn to for advice when I need it. Nor did he make me feel any less for being so young a Voice for our family.

I don't know what happened, or how, but the Crafters Guild has lost another member. I remember Horatio, the scamp, wearing his snake like a piece of jewelry, irreverent, the kind of wicked humor that you feel awful for finding funny, where you cough into your arm rather than admit you were laughing. And so serious. I think that was what I liked about him the most; he was amusing because he was never trying to be. Maybe that's what it was.

And he leaves behind a sweetheart. I know, because I made them the ring, I remember how he described what he wanted and I remember giggling as I engraved it and set the stone.

I've told others that our collective is like a family, and I've meant that; you don't know everything about some members of your family, sometimes you don't know hardly anything at all. But you do know that you care about them regardless, that they're important.

Lord Ansel Telmar presents an intriguing figure. The very picture of an Oathlands Knight in every way, shape and form.

Horatio Mercier. I saw him [a mass of dark lines, covering almost a paragraph].

I've been thinking about memory. About how little we have. About how a generation passes, a family passes, and names pass into records and are lost. Or where the names are not lost, all context is. What can you tell about Horatio Mercier from his name? Other than Horatio is a fantastic name. And I rather envy it.

Those remembered past a few generations may be people of status, scandal, legend, but these are few. Even in times of war, even in times when courage is required of every single person, we can recognize and remember only a few.

But the stories are countless. The experiences, countless. Here we are, the rest of us. Horatio had the courage of his passions, he was driven by fires that darkness could not dim for a moment. He was admirable. I admired him, his fascination, his restlessness, his constant wonder. Remember him. [Another scratched out line.] Please.

Someone died. Get used to it.

People you know and love are going to be called beyond the Reflection. People you barely knew. People you saw every day of your life.

We're at war, the first volleys have already been fired, the first few waves have already crashed.

Mourn them, mark their passing, and then get back into the business of getting back at the fuckers who took them from us.

6.9.1005 Afternoon.

Came to Arx. Not a fan. Could be worse. Smells strange.

Things called 'white journals' are a 'thing'. Seems pretty silly. Can't say I care a lot about other's gossip. Or whoever's knob is getting polished. About as interesting as pulling quills out your arm. Maybe as fun.

It was 'in my interest' to write in them. So, writing them.

Going to get my sword replaced. Maybe armor fixed. Not used to the whole 'coin' thing. Whatever happened to trading. Then see what the Greenmarchers want of me.

Relationship Note on Leo

He knew my older brothers better then I did, save perhaps for Edain. And it's a bit of a strange feeling, sitting down to speak with someone who has more memories of time spent with them then I do. Nonetheless, I know how highly they all regarded him. It was nice to find myself agreeing with their perceptions even after a relatively short discussion.
