Relationship Note on Mae

*A sketch of a dark haired woman wearing a black cloak that seems to shimmer. The paint treated with a dusting of silver to create it. The cloak is held close so that barely anything underneath can be seen, but there's a hint of a pant leg that's got a shimmering rainbow of color visible through a slit in the cloak.*

I hope the terrified look was more of the "I find the King of the Compact paying attention to me very alarming" variety and less of the "I find the King of the Compact using me as a muse for his artistic endeavors very alarming" variety.

Everything will be fine! You have my assurances.

I visited the Lodge of Petrichor today, to witness what my labours for Paladin Leola would be for - gifts to those attending and a prize. I was pleased to help, of course. And now I've had the pleasure of hunting with them. Boar spears aren't really that different from glaives - at least not the way I use them.

I was pleased to lose to Dame Esoka - if I must lose, then she is a woman I enjoy yielding to. And the cause of our hunt was good, with practical asides. I am grateful that many mouths will be fed over the coming days.

For my first official hunt for the lodge, placing in the semi-finals isn't too bad.

It was a magical, beautiful night. I am filled with awe and gratitude and the joy of new beginnings.

Thank you. All of you.

If you didn't get the token favors or the wine from the Soiree, send me a messenger and I'll gladly share this blessing.

My time since returning to Arx has not been what I expected. My little, careless sister is a beautiful woman. I thought I'd get rusty, or soft, but I find the time each day to duel and keep ready. I've already had to work in our politics to help fix a delicate situation. I thought I'd be bored out of my mind, it's why I waited ten years, why I spent time at war trying to get the excitement out of life, but I think I can have it here.

Our family is small yet in the city, we're lacking the people we need. The Marquessa is who knows where, and I've yet to see one of our voices. Our sword is going off to try and marry a noble from another march. Excitement is not what is lacking, there's plenty of that. What's lacking is an iron grip, we need to get our household under control. I can't do that if I can't speak with the Marquessa though. Today I feel as though I am lost, our family is lost, and I don't know where to find direction. That grip needs to come soon, we can't carry on this way.

We are all biased by our own experiences. I've studied the law my whole life, so I tend to see things through that prism. If you see things differently, I would like to discuss that with you, whether you're a scholar or not.

Relationship Note on Joslyn

It's an interesting thing, to be on both sides of the divide - the soldier who went out to battle and got hurt, and the one waiting for her loved one to awaken after such a severe blow.

I respect Joslyn for her skill and her dedication, of course. I would never ask her to stay behind when her blades might turn the tide.

But gods, if it isn't anguish more exquisite than any wound I have suffered personally, to watch her laid out and unconscious.

She has recovered. She is well.

For this I thank Lagoma and Gild and the Queen of Endings.

*A sketch of a puzzle; but the pieces don't quite fit together. Some edges are rounded where they should be sharp, others are sharp where they should be rounded. Others are square where they should be triangular. All of the pieces look like they *should* go together but they don't *quite* fit right. Little pieces off here and there so that the picture that should be there is disjointed and hard to see. Underneath are the word.*

I thought I understood. I thought we were a puzzle, that we could just fit back together.

But we're not a puzzle.

We're broken glass.

Oh I doubt I would be worth having an in-depth conversation with on this subject. I'm no scholar. What do I disagree with? If justice is the most important objective of the Compact--not only the Compact, but society in general--then all I can say is what I've already said: you could have fooled me. It's certainly not what I would have picked if I was asked what I thought the Compact's top priority was. Or the top five, for that matter.

Maybe I misunderstood you. Did you mean what you thought it should be? If so, good fucking luck to you.

What part of my words do you disagree with? The pursuit of justice is often just that -- a pursuit. We must remain diligent in such pursuits. The Sentinel is the only one who might know true justice. The rest of us will simply have to settle for the closest we can get to that. If you wish to meet with me to discuss the finer points of my views on the subject of justice I welcome it.

Justice is the most discussed and most important objective of The Compact of Arvum and our society. It is the foundation of well ordered human living. By nature and against the propriety and decency of our better judgement, we are but slaves to our own selfish desires. Justice demands the regulation of our own selfish actions by securing fair distributions and equal treatment of equals. It is therefore our imperative to propitiate to the gods with our sacrifice for justice. We must sacrifice our own selfish desires to protect the Compact from those who would seek to destroy it. We must break the slavery bonds our own selfishness has on us.

And we must punish those who refuse to make this necessary sacrifice.

For my own personal reference, now and in the future:

"In deep woods you may hunt, in fields you may sow and harvest, and from low valleys to high peaks you may still find safe haven. Through the blessing of Petrichor's grace you are granted dominion over all lands."

The god Petrichor, sometimes called the Patron of Farmers, grants mankind dominion over all of nature according to the teachings of the Faith of the Pantheon.

These are not my own words. I asked a Scholar if I might transcribe them into my journal. The Scholar, naturally, kindly granted me this request.

To celebrate the arrival of spring with the Lodge of Petrichor, I took part in the boar hunt. The competition was grand. Princess Marian, Princess Lou, Dame Alexis, Lord Estaban, and Count Artorius showed great bravery in facing up to such fierce game. I was rather surprised to win, given the skill they displayed. I received a new warhorse, trained by the Lodge, as a prize. I shall treat him with all the honor and care I would show to any of Riven's soldiers, as befits a knight's steed, and remember Petrichor whenever I ride him.

I did not get to witness as much of the rest of the competition as I would have liked, but my heart sings to hear Princess Tikva and First Officer Calaudrin Estardes did so very well. Tikva's skill as a scout and tracker for Riven remains legend among Heron Hall's troops, and Calaudrin's displays of competence are always pleasing to me.

It was a fine way to welcome spring, to get some food for the people of Arx, and to remember the strength of the land and Petrichor. Honors to Dame Leola and Whisper Saedrus for organizing it all.

Regarding the flattering words of the Legate Orazio, I may only thank them with humility. The times we have had chance to interact, it has been in a positive, educative and inspiring manner. It is with the disposition of a learner, a student, that I approach each of the meetings of his. If the lightness of my diplomacy has been noted, it is because of an attempt at honesty -- as was put.

Regarding the celebration at the Lodge of Petrioch, I must thank the organizers for what was a wonderful evening. My men and I had an enjoyable time during the hunt, and I am sure the rest of the festivities were pleasant as I have been hearing. It is unfortunate that I could not make it to all of them, due to my packed schedule.

Finally, I owe an explanation about my travel to the Bastion in the past month. I must summarize that I fell ill and had treatment done to myself in the privacy of my very own chambers back at the holding. I invite everyone to afford themselves the burden of sending recovery cards -- my recovery was done in silence, in hopes we could all skip such niceties which I considered weren't needed in a time when we couldn't afford to look weak.

Lord Sivard Grimhall is rather irritating. He seems fond of Lady Regla so, he can't be all annoyance. He needs to work on being less annoying.

Between the feast last night and the hunts today, Dame Leola and Master Saedrus have really outdone themselves. It has been a wonderful respite, an opportunity to really embrace Petrichor, as well as demonstrate our skills in friendly competition. I am sure there is no greater way to honor the Lord of Dominion than to come together in the woods and put our whole hearts into efforts to feed all the hungry.

I congratulate Calaudrin Estardes especially on some very pretty shooting, and all of my fellow competitors on the stag hunt. It was a really a splendid good time, and I know the meat we hunted will be well used.

What a wonderful showpiece for the Lodge! I look forward to seeing how its works develop in the future.
