You are kind of irritating. Be less irritating. I don't entirely dislike you, at least.

A griffon. Something I've only previously seen depicted on a banner. Well, banners don't do them justice. Majestic, noble, deadly. It plucked ambushers from treetops and took them for a short trip before they reached their rapid destinations. All in the matter of a few short moments. Definitely deadly.

Countess Mia and Dame Felicia of course should receive the credit for releasing the magnificent creature from captivity. To think the cultists were going to sacrifice it. Well, the rest of the team performed splendidly in providing the distraction; Lord Killian, Lord Corban, Dame Paloma, and myself all threw ourselves into the fray, in our own ways. We kept the attention of the would-be sacrificers overall. Countess Mia was able to both release it and do battle, while Dame Felicia watched over her back - which ended up being need, so thankfully I kept them paired together.

Overall the mission was a success with those present and representing the Compact in their unique capacities, comporting themselves with both honor and dignity.

Still. A griffon. Despite being bloodied and enraged within it's cage, it still had the look of something that could have torn ten men apart on a whim.

Relationship Note on Corban

On a recent foray the good lord of House Telmar provided me a service. He, much to my chagrin, took a blow on my behalf. I had foolishly sprang a counter-ambush on some would-be ambushers and for a brief period of time weathered the assault of a whole group of wild-eyed cultists. While I held out for what I felt was a considerable amount of time, inevitably a lucky blow or two will prevail; and they did. Lord Corban came hurtling into the mix after he and those in the other fight had eliminated their threats.

There were many heroic moments in our patrol, but that one stood out intimately for me. Likely because it involved my own safety and wellbeing.

To the Faithful Reader:

Astronomical readings indicate that the Eclipse of Mirrors approaches. This event often causes consternation and concern among some of the Faithful, as it honors Tehom, the Thirteenth. In the Lyceum, this time is one of celebration and revelry, a feast and festival offered up to the god of the Reflection. It can seem odd, for those not raised in the culture, to venerate the Reflection. However, the worship of Tehom comes down not to the veneration of wickedness or of the opposite of virtue, but rather to the acknowledgement that each of us carries darkness inside, and to deny that is to risk letting it grow wild, untended and unknown. A man who claims of himself nothing but righteousness is certainly a man who is lying to himself - and once one lies to themselves about their own innate goodness, other lies are quick to follow. A woman who believes that what she does MUST be just because she is just, or because books tell her what 'justice' is, is one who doomed to commit injustice after injustice. If you do not acknowledge your flaws, the possibility of your own corruption, then you will be ruled by those flaws, and led down the path of corruption.

The essence of the worship of the Thirteenth is to remind us that sometimes the mirror shows us a truth that we would rather shy away from. We must face it, squarely, and manage it - even the darkness and the temptation. If you are prideful, admit that, and find a place to spend that pride which will improve the world around you, rather than denying it until it sabotages your relationships. If you are envious, use that envy to motivate yourself to do better, rather than tearing others down. None of us is without flaw - do not shy away from your flaws, but channel and rule them in the pursuit of virtue and the gods' wills.

Thus, the worship of Tehom is best understood and conducted in the thoughtful worship of all the gods. Ultimately, we are to aspire to the virtues the Pantheon shows us: Truth, Justice, Fidelity, Wisdom, Courage, Honor, Hope, Life, Change, Healing, Respectful Dominion, Choice, Rebirth, etc. One cannot worship Tehom outside the context of the Pantheon; to do so invites the idolization of the reflection, rather than understanding it in its context. Tehom - and every god - is one god among many, and none of them stands alone or above; our call and charge as Faithful is to live as close to all the gods, and to the guidance of the Faith, as we can. But we cannot do that if we deny the existence of temptation, and those things that would steer us off the path. As the Eclipse draws near, I challenge every person to look within themselves, and not to flinch or avert their eyes from their own darkness - rather, how to control and channel that darkness to better journey towards the virtues of the Pantheon.

I can't believe I have to write this.

Do not attempt to 'pet' mythical beasties and First Children.

It's like giving pinching the cheeks of your sharp as a dagger grandfather and going 'Ain't you cute'.

A griffin. In person. I had heard of the myths and legends about these Grayson mounts. But to see one in person. It is so strange to call an animal, especially one that some crazed cultists were looking to sacrifice to the dark gods, "regal." But he was. Noble. Bloodied but unbowed. Majestic.

I only wish I could talk to him, to encourage him to join us, to tell him how there is one that wished to see him more than anything else. But he is alive somewhere to the North. Maybe some day we will meet again.

While I can't agree with Baron de Lire's entire assessment of unicorns, I can verify that they are perfectly capable of fucking you up but good if you trifle with them. So don't.

I've been hearing more and more praise for unicorns. People calling them lovely, majestic creatures, that sort of thing. Some who want to play with them, or have one, or pet one or the like.

They're not. Unicorns are foul beasts. One of their ilk killed one of my best men, before I took up the Captain-General's chair. Filthy scales and long, curling horns meant not only to impale, but to disembowel as they shake you about on it.

Awful creatures, and the type that'll kill you as soon as piss on you, and take my word that they can do that from quite the distance too. Mark my words, someone's going to get themselves killed because of this rush of pro-unicorn propaganda.

I will say this on sirens, coming home to my husband with tales of sirens certainly led to a very warm homecoming indeed. If I ever see that siren again and manage to resist the allure of her song, I think I shall have to thank her for inspiring such a devoted welcome. Admittedly, it was thinking of dear prince that carried my feet home. No wonder sailors are so drawn, her song called to mind all my favorite memories of the sea at it's most radiant. I can say for sure should I ever have to chose, I would chose Edain over the sea I've learned. It could have been the fear of Aunt Eirene slapping the back of my head and calling me a wanton idiot that kept me in check as well, admittedly.

May your hopes find safe harbors.

His Red Serpent is huge. He is so very proud of it and does quite like to show it to me whenever he has the chance. I've even gotten to ride on it. I was suitably impressed. It's the best I've ever seen and I've seen a few. Would that all could see his Red Serpent and take a ride on it as well.

My friend,

My glimmer of hope, my flicker of optimism. There are so many questions that I would ask you, but - oh - I have no wish to drown you in my overflowing curiosity. Over and over again, I run the questions through my mind - count them - and realize that I need to select a few. A couple. The most important ones to ask. In my mind and in my heart these two questions are the most crystal clear: how important are you to me? How can I help you the most? I would chance the answer to the first is: so very much. You are the presence of a hand held, a voice heard, and a smile felt.

From the past to the present, I have wondered; what do you see? Do you remember how I tried to push you away? I reflect on those mistakes. How that regret pains me so. I am glad that you have looked past my fears, and have taken the time for me -- thank you.

Always,

C.
