I think that many would forget that there were victims on both sides of the war with Brand. Most of the Abandoned tribes that we fought were not there by choice. I found no pleasure in fighting them, only regret. As I said before, it was a war for survival, and there was little choice but to fight.
But that doesn't mean I feel no empathy for those left behind afterwards, mourning their dead and needing to piece their lives back together. I've walked amongst them, listening to the things they have said, both positive and negative. I have seen that even in the middle of a time of mourning, there are those who would make trouble, who would sacrifice the young for their own gains.
It is all so wearying, sometimes. I occasionally feel as though we never learn from the mistakes of the past. It batters at my hope for the future, though I still cling to that hope with tooth and nail.

I met this week with Archduke Niccolo to discuss the refugee crisis and how House Gilden could help. I had already spoken with Lady General Calypso and pledged silver and resources to relocating the poor souls to Caith where they will find housing and jobs. It will be good for the people who need homes and good for Caith as well. New neighbors, a mixing of traditions, a new way forward for a growing barony. I have the Archduke's support in this, of course, and I hope the people I am fortunate enough to assist will be happy and find some measure of peace.

A lawyer whose family is sworn to House Gilden. She's offered to help me with the adminstrative side of running the barony, for which I am grateful. So long as she produces, at least! I'm not sure what to think of her otherwise. More later, maybe.

Relationship Note on Joslyn
While not a noblewoman, Miss Joslyn Manicelli acts as an impeccable representative for her Duchess and House. She also has a wonderful sense of aesthetics and a very Lycene manner of being. I realise that may sound as a back-handed compliment from an Oathlander, but I mean it in the most positive of ways.

I have arrived and mostly settled in Arx. For now, I've got a room in an inn called "The Sleepless Knights". The pun amuses. And, as I told his grace, the beds are not -that- bad.
It is not my first time in Arx, of course. I am sure if I go looking, I can find my last set of journals, from when I visited as a squire, spending a few months here. I'm sure I was even more wide-eyed with wonder than I am now.
The damage after the siege is still visible. The wound in the wall could be seen from the edge of the forest.
For some reason, it made me think of my father. His wounds weren't healing right. And during the trip home, they festered. And he died.
I will add my efforts to ensure that Arx rises stronger from her wounds.

So, I met somebody new. She's a recently knighted Valardin Knight. She's also probably the cutest woman I've ever laid eyes on, and yet also strong, there's no doubting her prowess. I haven't been able to stop thinking about her, and I cannot wait until we finally have our dinner. Beautiful, charming and strong... I didn't even know they made women like her.

Fight like fucking wild cats in the city and end up losing the most. It's a damn shame what's become of the Thraxian ward in the aftermath of the siege. Our people have built warships taller than the fucking clouds, it's time we put that to use rebuilding the lives of our people. I'm not going to be caught with my britches around my ankles again.

The medal ceremony was quite special. Edain has a way with words.
Alis and Marian did our family proud up there and everyone who
received their awards earned them ten times over. I hope that in
time, I too can distinguish myself. Though I am less concerned
about that than my sweet cousin's fainting spells. I was worried
