There are direwolves and leopards and mountain lions stalking this city. Don't ask what I think of people keeping animals that belong in the wild. My language probably wouldn't be fit for this journal. There are exceptions, but--
And yet noblewomen come to the Palace Stables to play with Patches.
Let me tell you about Patches.
He was maybe five weeks when I found him, too young to leave his mother, but I can't help but think his mum and siblings were lost to some horrible fate. He fell into the hands of some lowlifes who were running a betting game behind some tavern Alaric and I stopped at when the king was slumming. The game? A nest of vicious rats vs a five week old puppy. Place your money on who you thought would live.
I thrashed the lowlifes, dispatched the rats humanely, and saved the puppy. Carried him home inside my shirt, a tiny whimpering bundle more blood than fur.
I didn't think he'd make it. He'd lost most of one ear to the rats already, and the rat bites festered, foul and infected. There was no saving the one leg all the rats had latched onto, and a military healer who'd seen worse on the battlefield took it off to save the rest of him.
To my surprise, he lived. It's hard to kill tough little guttersnipes, after all. He clung on--and he flourished. Despite what was done to him, he wags his tail, and greets people with the dog equivalent of a grin.
I tell this story to give two lessons:
One, people are shit.
Two, Patches has always been a good dog.

I've decided that in my next life, whatever deep life-spanning friendships will be with simple people.

Tonight, I lost a brother but gained a sister. I do not yet know the Duchess of Setarco well, but it is my hope to see that change in the coming days! I don't believe I've ever -seen- my brother look upon a woman with such a smolder until this day. I didn't know whether to squee or cry, so I discreetly did both during the ceremony. It was rather intimate, beautiful even.
It makes me look forward to the pitter-patter of little feet some day - a little niece or nephew to dote upon with love.

Relationship Note on Mailys
Every day Mirari surprises me in some way. Last night it was with a new relative. A courtesan recently free of her contract, Mailys is a delight of buoyant smiles and good cheer. We didn't get to talk long, but the girl has a sort of lightness of spirit that shines right through. She's a boon for us, and for Arx, and quite welcome.

House Thrax is filled with men and women both of great respect. The Voice, Princess Donella Thrax, is a competent, decisive woman who every member of her house listens to, for good reason. A woman who I share much with and I hope to share more. Both duchesses of the Lyceum, both similarly politically minded. She is charming and warm and a great woman to have by your side.

Family is the most important of all, it's been so long since I've had family around me, I'd forgotten how wonderful it could be.

Lord Ashford does not remember me. I bumped into him, quite literally, at the Grayson holdings. He thinks me a crafter. I set him a challenge to find out who I was, as he seemed interested in meeting. He seems a man that likes a challenge. We shall see how he succeeds.

So many new faces today. I hope I will become better acquainted with all of them. Some are rather interesting I think.
True, it doesn't kill the sting of losing those already in my heart but are now parted from me, but the hope of beautiful new things is something to be honoured and enjoyed.
Also, I still adore love no matter how much it hurts me. I only wish it didn't hurt others so much.

Today, I see my best friend wed. I am so very happy for him, though selfishly, I will miss his presence in our ward, and his blade amongst our own. Whatever melancholy I might feel for not having him quite as close, I find comfort knowing that this is something that he longed for. We do not always get to see people marry for love, it is a beautiful thing to behold when it happens. And Belladonna herself is an astonishing and captivating woman. I do hope to get to know her better in the coming days.

So. Ainsley and Pietro. That took me by surprise..to say the least. I mean..one minute I'm knocking Ainsley around the training field because he's acting all upset about something, and the next Pietro is planting a sloppy kiss on him and they're laughing and clingy.
That's going to take some getting used to.

Relationship Note on Freja
Spirits, I love my niece! I think we are going to get on quite well! I'd like to work on some things with her in the future, she seems to be questioning her relationship with the spirits. I tried to reassure her that, that is a normal thing. But I think we should delve a little bit, there may be something truly blocking her. She's around taint an awful lot. I think she and I should get together as soon as possible on this!
