Relationship Note on Valentina

A new game, perfect for your party pleasures:

Invite guests. Give each guest a small trinket (I used diamonds). Turn guests loose, telling them that they can 'win' diamonds from others by challenging them to perform tasks, or betting them that they can win a contest between the two. At the end of the night, the guests get to keep their trinkets, however many they were able to accumulate.

Do not, if you plan to take this game and use it at your own party, allow one Lady Valentina Pravus to play. She is ruthless, and will talk you out of your diamonds before you even realize they are gone.

I breathe more deeply in winter than I do in summer. The air seems clearer, cleaner. More pure. It pours into the lungs, fills them in a way summer air doesn't.

My little garden is blanketed under the snow to sleep for the season, there to dream green dreams. My spiders in their little tent, they are insulated behind thick walls of golden hay. Whether they dream I cannot say but I like to imagine it's so. Jeffeth has helped me lay in wood enough for months and months, and the pantry is full to bursting, the medicine cabinet stocked. The people I look after, my people, they will pass to the Wheel in light and warmth.

It isn't a hut buried in evergreen branches-- oh, I miss that smell, pine and snow mingling, the blue sky, and high mountain sun glittering on an icy crust with just a trace of camp smoke to remind us we people have a place in the world too-- but it's enough.

Light and warmth, a year put to rest tucked beneath a white blanket, and another new to come. I do love winter... though I would love it less if I weren't able to create a place within it, where my other loves can safely bide.

It is truly a tragedy to lose such a remarkable, talented, and brilliant protege. But I suppose that seeing one's protege rise too high for you to continue to sponsor is the best way for it to happen.

Unrelated follow up:

Astrid locked herself in a cabinet for an hour yesterday. There was a widespread panic before someone heard her cackling. I don't know why it was hilarious, but apparently cabinets are very funny.

Found her in there again this morning. Laughing. Again. Hoping this new hobby fades fast.

I had the good fortune of running the captain I'd served under as a cabin-boy, on a night at the Ebb and Flow with the some other graybeards. I hadn't seen him since our first run in with the Marin'alfar.

Once when I was very young, I was being foolish at the helm and rocking the wheel side to side. I was making noises as if we were in a storm and I was only hope as a navigating savant. Complete with lightning striking and thunder crashing in my own head. Unfortunately due to my idiocy, I'd also thrown us entirely off course.

When the captain interrupted me he took me into his quarters. He had a cupboard around five or six feet tall. He locked me in there for about eight or nine hours. Never did I play with the wheel of a ship ever again, that's for fucking sure.

My favorite story of him. I'm glad he's still sailing.

I've finally found a match and taken the first steps towards marrying as so many older, more established houses do. Contract topics are being discussed and I've been warmed by so many words of support. After years of trying to make a match and do my duty as a land holding noble another house finally said yes and it's the most encouraging sensation.

So I suppose this sentiment is for future neo-nobles as we're called. It may take time, but eventually even we find a means to behave as we are expected to and it is not so painful to conform to the primeval noble standards.

And Lord Cadern is a wonderful man, I count myself most fortunate.

I may be an Oathlander, but the Cloudspine happens to be a place rather full of winters.

I find myself more kin to the Northlands than anywhere else when it comes to matters of seasons. This time of year is much more 'home' than summer. I love wearing my coat, finding snow upon my shoulders and in my hair, and seeing the long trail of footprints left behind me.

Should any of you require mint for your tea, I would be glad to see to it that Blackram mint care packages are sent your way.

Despite the amount of planning. Despite being well meaning in your actions. Despite always having someone else's best interest at heart...

You can not please everyone, you can not decide what feeling your words inspire in another, and you should never dismiss those feelings once they occur.

You can never please everyone all of the time, and despite your best efforts to do so, you will be the villain in someone else's story.

I love the snow! The way it hangs off the boughs of evergreens and the sharp, crisp scent in the air that it brings. It scintillates under the rays of the sun when freshly fallen. Who doesn't enjoy a warm mug of mulled wine next to a roaring fire after coming in from the cold?

What I do not like is snow all over my library. Not at all. Not that I'm pointing fingers at anyone (even if I am).

It is truly shocking to see such an attack on the leader of one of House Velenosa's esteemed vassals, one who has worked so tirelessly for the welfare, prosperity, and safety of her people. All I can say is this:

Snow is honestly the worst. I am very sorry for those forced to live with it in their domains.

It'll work out how I said I would do.

I sail for Setarco this week to shop for dresses. I will even take some family to help. No, the dresses aren't for me, don't be crazy.

It turns out mother is alive. All this time I had believed the assassin had gotten her, too. Yes, I am only taking family along so they can do the dress shopping while I catch up with mother and ask her all the things I need to know.

*The ink here looks blotchy.* I guess there's no urgency now, but still am leaving this week.

On the way to Leaholdt on my continuing pilgrimage from Arx to Duskshire, a wagon came careening down the hill towards me out of control. I saw a man hanging on, and decided I would do as Norwood would do. No thought! No plan! Just do. So Bandit and I wheeled around and raced after, my intent was to have him jump off onto the horse with me.

It wouldn't be that easy. He'd caught himself up in the reins AND he had an infant on his back. I had just enough time to underhand my dagger to him and scoop the baby into my arms before the wagon flew off the road and into the river, the man with it.

He couldn't swim.

So I'm off my horse in a flash, with a wailing, squirmy baby cradled in my arm and soon wading waist deep in freezing water trying to reach the poor man with a long branch I'd found on the bank. Luckily he got a hold of it and pulled himself to the shallow water, only to end up hugging me like he was afraid he was still going to be swept away. Before long the rest of the family appeared so I could hand off the baby and the man could be peeled off by his wife.

I'd wanted a bath, true, but that wasn't what I had in mind. Still, I think Baron Norwood would be pleased and I was very glad to have rescued them both.

Well put. Your thoughts were quite enjoyable to read and think of. Thank you for taking the time to write them. Although I will never fully appreciate snow and winters, I respect one's love for their homeland greatly.

On a more humorous note, not meant to offend any Northerners:

You do make winter sound like my late mother. That is much appreciated, despite not being the intention of your journal.
