Relationship Note on Sabrina

My cousin has come from Caina to the city, and with her arrival come a flood of memories of a childhood peppered with mischief and levity. She hit it right when she told me change in necessary, but to cope with the realities of the world, sometimes we must cling to those memories.

I am glad to have her in the city, and look forward to all of the new memories we will make together.

When it all looks a bit dim, I know I have my family to help me out. Because I'm lucky that way.

I took great enjoyment today roaming between the Inns in Arx and meeting many people for the first time, I wonder how many will continue on to become friends of mine.

Relationship Note on Hadrian

I'm not convinced that Lord Arik feels pity. If he gave you a prize, it was because you deserved it. And perhaps because he hoped that next time, if I compete, you'd steal the title from me so that I couldn't remind him of my victory at opportune moments. We can never neglect the self-serving motives here.

So congratulations, my lord. You deserved it, and it was a pleasure to have such strong competition at the Beards and Brews.

Congratulations to Lady Carita and Lady Mabelle as well. Fake or not, their beards were most impressive.

As a merchant, and a firm supporter of the Faith, I feel it pertinent to correct one small detail from an earlier journal...

To Lady Celeste Pravus,

It is not Cardian Steelsilk that has been put on embargo, but Eurusi Pyreweave (or Fireweave, if you prefer). This came about as the result of many actions, but the last of which were a series of unfortunate events that occurred in the Isles and included, I believe, Eurusi pirates bearing live cargo of the slave variety.

I do hope this helps to clear up whatever misunderstanding has occurred!

I failed to outrun the wind and snow before coming into Arx by sea. I must confess it made for an interesting final approach to the docks but it was well within the capabilities of Osprey's crew.
I have never seen them secure the ship at dock so quickly to get into the warmth though.

I don't think I wrote anything about my birthday when it passed. It was quietly spent with Harlan, and the twins. At 6 months, they're starting to be less squishy and a little more adorable every day.

And now that I've had that birthday, and I am officially 22, I feel like I maybe have begun to gain some experience in a variety of areas. This is not necessarily a bad thing.

I've been a little remiss in my poetry studies of late, and so choosing the theme for the next poetry reading is my attempt to invite the muses to inspire me.

More likely, I will write nothing interesting and will feel exquisitely jealous of the other poets who read that evening. In this case, jealousy isn't even terrible, for I am so enamored of hearing the beautiful words of others, and they in turn act as muses for the future.

Today's poet is tomorrow's muse.

The theme will be legends and myths; perhaps some historians will find their inner bards to share their favorite tales in meter and rhyme.

It does sometimes make me feel more than a little antiquated, but there is real pleasure in returning to the role of a tutor and instructor for others: it brings me back to a number of periods in my past, when I was entrusted with a small portion of the responsibility for educating various members of my kin. Frequently, the topics are the same: points of etiquette, principles of diplomacy, excursions into history, and the like. But I particularly welcome a recent addition to the curriculum: teaching others how to pass on their own knowledge feels doubly rewarding. At least to this former tormentor of young children with the terrors of books and numbers!

Though I am still - somewhat guiltily - enjoying the popular acclaim with which I and many others of my name are greeted within the Lycene Quarter, I cannot help but muse upon related changes. The welcome mellowing of attitudes towards the Truesworn is still in place; indeed, there have been a few enquiries about Truesworn history and even recruitment.

Some parts about being a Voice and Duchess I enjoy more than others.

This is probably true about many things, but there are definitely days when I am more pleased with the way things work, and others when I feel I am barely keeping my head above water.

Today is one of the good days. Of course it will take time for plans to come to fruition, but at least there is something that we can plan, and work with. And hopefully it will work out well.

Why is good inspiration so difficult to capture in glass? I suppose the challenge also is part of the necessity, but I must master this for the muse.

When the shadows rise, it's easy to see the light in others and lose sight of the light in one's self... like stars, we see others against the black, but don't recognize our own glow. It isn't gone. It's there. But it takes a shift in perspective to recognize it again. I have helped others make that shift. It took someone else's kind and guiding hand to do the same for myself, and I won't forget the lesson.

I always love the first of the winter snows when they roll around! There's no better weather for curling up in front of a fire and writing letters or journals! And everything looks so pristine for the first few hours, like the world has been wrapped up in a bright, glittering white blanket. As if the world is saying slow down, hush, look it can all be made well again!

Of course, then the wagons and carriages go out and boots tend to turn the snow a bit gray or worse, but! It's still quite wonderful to behold and it inspires so much creativity in both the old and the young who go out! I adore seeing everyone's take on snowpeople and watching the snowball fights--from afar! While aeterna surely does not stain it still feels absolutely horrible on the skin when wet.

I am sure this feeling of winter bliss will last until about the third snowfall. Maybe the fourth! And then I shall be complaining about the cold like my dear husband already is!

Relationship Note on Amari

Amari, I require an adventure, big or small, just something to break up all this staring at books, scrolls, parchment. Even if it's rescue some kittens, or a pygmy goat that got stuck in tree. Something. Please.

Not much progress has been made in my recent forays into the Great Archive to search for information. I wonder if the Winter weather, is starting to get to me a touch. Or if it's because I have not been spending as much time as I usually do in the Kennels, training and tending to the hounds. Or spending time outdoors with my own hounds and animal friends. Perhaps I need something to distract myself with for a little bit, help give myself a break from all the research I have been doing lately.

Relationship Note on Willow

When we speak I am reminded of the great differences between your leadership style and my cousins, not Lydia, but Nadia. It was a different world then and things have changed so much during that time.

In this changing landscape I am well pleased that you are still with us to keep us always moving forwards and looking out for us.

Please note that the scholars may take some time preparing your journal for others to read.
