Some commoners don't care about a sense of humor in their leaders.

Unless they are Lycene commoners. Lycene nobles that can't laugh at themselves aren't considered very effective.

So the topic of Champions has come up, and this is something I have yammered on about to pretty much everyone with an open ear: There are fifteen of us actively working in this city. Challenge more duels.

Beyond the question of "does anybody really want to see what happens when fifteen bored Champions get together?" (Although, admittedly, I certainly do) there is a stigma over what and when duels should be challenged for. It is ridiculous and the standards are far, far too high.

Put simply, a duel should be challenged over anything you want someone backing you up on. Slights do not have to be major - I'll talk about major slights later, don't you worry. Did someone not buy you a drink, despite offering to others? Did someone forget your name? Did someone do something that is disturbing the honor of the Peerage as a whole? Is there a pretty girl you want to have a show for? A pretty boy? Are you just bored?

Issue a challenge. Call a duel. I know I personally charge less if I think the duel is going to be fought over something fun, because it gives people something to do and encourages more of them. By fighting more duels over things that are light-hearted, you're also taking the pressure off of yourself to hire the absolute top Champions, and this is good because as wonderful as Prince Luca and Caspian are, the rest of us each has our own unique style and flair to bring to the field. That is what the Champions are here for, for the show.

As for more pressing slights, real insults? Start declaring more duels for those as well. By being willing to put blood on the line, you are leaving your point up to Gloria. It is a very brave thing to do, and something any noble should be proud to do. By avoiding doing so, you are saying that you are not willing to fight for your honor, what you believe in, for your family, for your lands. Image is power, and you are sacrificing that image. Believe me when I say that everyone notices, from Commoner on up.

And for Gods' sakes stop fighting your own duels of honor. It's tacky. Save those for when your Swords fight to stop a war, or a Rite to Gloria. Some of you may think your honor is slighted by not fighting on your own - I'd say you are showing you are letting your pride get in the way of doing things right.

Not a good look for the Peerage.

So what if Countess Keaton isn't firing out snappy quips every other minute? Commoners don't really care about that kind of thing, as long as they have food on their table and a safe place to live. She's as good as her word to the people under her care. That's all that matters, as far as I'm concerned anyway.

Also, thinking about the subject of marriage, I'm really glad I'm not a noble. Ring on finger, a few words, job done. Doesn't work out? No worries. Just move on and hope for better in the future. Makes life simpler.

I hope you'll have drinks, and very strong ones at that. I get the sense I'll need them to get through such a dinner.

Goodness Master Voss, you don't think Sabella and I would forget our friends?

Why, we would love to have you over for dinner and drinks and we could just talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk the night away!

Go on; describe it. Force yourself.

Also, your match with Lord Niklas is a good one, and I approve, for what my thoughts are worth. Primarily, it means no one else will have to endure chatter from either of you on an ongoing basis. You can just talk at each other and see if the other one ever stops talking to listen.

So the other day I said that I had become a scholar, then an explorer and I wondered what I'd be next.

A prince, apparently!

I look forward to seeing how much further Sir Bayweather can bow. At what point are we violating natural laws? Can someone fold in on themselves? If he just keeps bowing until he rolls up into sort of a cinnamon bun of martial puissance do I have to keep that in my pocket until I need it? These are questions no one should have to ask, but I guess they fall on the head of wise philosopher princes like me to consider.

Needless to say, I am deliriously happy and am eager for three months to be over so there can be a large party and I can start coming up with nicknames for all of my new cousins. (Also the being married part is very good because of the tremendous love I feel. I'll let Sabella plan the party, though. I have already been vetoed as far as having Steve as the ringbearer.)

Love and Marriage: an institute you can't disparage. Ask the local gentry. They will say it's elementary.

Given how exceptionally nice you had become and that you had updated your will, I should have been able to guess that you knew it would happen.

I am sorry I did not. I would have said more to you the last time I saw you.

There was a dance challenge, and I missed it?

This is terrible news.

If there's any aggrieved parties out there stewing over some slight or another, please demand satisfaction through dance.

I would like to thank my Voices: Princess Tikva, Princess Cara, and Prince Ainsley along with Marquis Kennex for their work they all put in on the marriage contract that I now have in my hands. I cannot begin to describe the happiness and relief and elation I felt when I heard the proclamation and then received a copy of it to my own hands! I mean, I could describe it, but then Master Voss would roll his eyes so hard they'd get stuck and while I do want to support the healers in this city I'd like to do so by other means than sending them patients.

Suffice to say I AM SO EXCITED and I know that this is just a courtship period but I'm just going to throw it out there that I'm going to need a fancy dress soon and does anyone have ideas for flowers and also hair and locations and THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS TO DO AND PLAN AND THIS IS GOING TO BE THE BEST WEDDING EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

((in a different, flowery script))
I made Scholar Oswyn write those. He thought only one would suffice, I disagreed, and we compromised

I imagine if I ever get to the point where I am challenged, I'll have Rymarr serve as my champion and require the duel be via arm wrestling.

The removal of his shirt is optional.

I'm trying to decide how many fucks I have to give towards challenging someone (2 someones) to duels. Considering I tend to roll my eyes at how stupid many of them are, and the proclivity of certain people to raise them, it's not many fucks at all.

Any Champions want to consult with me on this? Do ya'll need work or are bored out of your skulls?

I'm almost giddy with excitement about the Darts and Drinking Tournament this season. We have something so fuckin' special for the drinking contest this time. I also made up a completely new prize that I don't remember making, but all the apprentices assure me I did.

Someday I'm going to look back at all these journals and either note this time of my life as my greatest achievements, or 'that time of domestic shit when I should have been sailing'.

And hey, as a special treat. If you're a prodigal or a refugee? You get a free pass into the Darts and Drinking Tournament! It's at the Murder of Crows. This is courtesy of your Deputy Minister of Refugee and Prodigal Affairs. You're welcome. Free booze. What more can you want? (free drugs? That's coming soon, don't you worry)

I always keep an eye on news and gossip of challenges. As a House Sword I feel it is my duty to do so... Sometimes I do wonder if the trend of challenges over small things has led to challenges over silly things. It must be difficult to be a champion at the moment if challenges continues to trend towards dancing, hiding, and other things normally found at social events and not challenges how will they stay relevant?

Is the city of Arx ready for the dancing champion of the Guild?

I would gladly pay the mural price for a standard lesson, mostly as I think it should be considered hazard pay. I like bright and cheerful colors, hence the likely hazard to your person for as much.

Would I ask for payment, you ask?

To streamline discussion we should probably focus on whether or not nobles who get divorces should be paid.
