I just heard that Boots won the contest and there are going to be plushies of him made. He'll be thrilled.
Maybe I should get him a tiny armor made, and ask for the plushies to have it too.
It'd be funny...

Relationship Note on Aureth

There is never any dishonor in yielding the field when it is clear an opponent has best you, or that fate has conspired against you and you shall not win the day. None.

There is also no dishonor in choosing to fight with your utmost to the very last, regardless of being outmatched, if that is how you feel you best honor your Faith, your family, those you carry the favor of, or even yourself.

There is no one that can speak the will of the Queen of Endings and Beginnings with more authority than you. But that does not mean none of the gods would find their hearts moved by such perseverance.

There is no reason to shame those that chose to fight to their last in the Tournament of Roses with you your tongue firmly in your cheek. Just as there is no cause for any of them to say they are braver than those that showed the respect to yield. All competitors were brilliant and and honored themselves, the King, and Limerance in my eyes, for whatever that might be worth.

Melee.

(It's a storm of competing images, and if it were heard it would be a cacophony. Various combatants are rendered in harsh and overly shaded charcoal, fighting against one another. No, it's not the tournament. It's a battlefield. They wield shards of broken glass - or mirror - as weapons. Everyone has empty eyes, except for the Mercies that are healing the fallen.)

The sword strutted about the field, regaled in ostentatious drab,
They managed to go unscathed so long, nary a jab nor stab.
But when they found their choice was the same as all on the field,
They complained when the sword was turned, and only whining could they yield.

A fine array and a daring display,
while the steel of so many did sing.
And while some are keen to play the prey,
Others have naught a hand to wring.

Masques.

( The page is filled with a dreamy assortment of masks in watercolor. A colorful candle flicker of a flaming mask. A chilled and sparkling mask of frost that drips icicles. A mask of stars and galaxies. A grinning skull with a smiling raven. A mask of pale flowers with a scatter of windblown white petals kissed with spring green that hits the edge of the journal page and continues on to decorate the borders of the next. )

Rumor has it that the new in thing among the quality is to try to die in tournament fights like we are Nox'Alfar who will simply hop along to a new body no one is using as soon as we die, memories intact, to continue in more or less the same fashion in which we began.

It does seem like the kind of fad that is self-limiting, but just in case the fashion spreads, here is a reminder from me to you:

Death is not something to be taken lightly and it does no honor to any god to do so.

Some of my fellow competitors in the Tournament of Roses melee have recorded their praise for the healers of our city, and I would add to that chorus.  My hurts were tended expertly by Mother Mercy Sophie, Thena of the Godsworn, and Lady Reigna.  I am sure others would have aided me had I required it, even pressed as they were with other patients.  But my heart is even more grateful to them for coaxing my Count Thesarin back to consciousness.  I had for a moment feared the worst might befall him.

I would also record my respect for the swords who finally pressed me into quitting the field.  In truth I'm not sure if it was Dame Leta, Baron Silas, or the champion Prince Talen himself who struck the blow that made me yield.  It was quite a scrum!  There is no shame in bowing to an honorable and skilled opponent in a fair fight.

I look forward to taking the field with all of Arx's fine warriors again next year.  All thanks to Prince Edain for doing the hero's work of seeing it to completion.

Today marks another one of those days where I am woken up by a slight headache. It is not as pungent as it was the previous incident and during the previous incident it happened at night instead of very early in the morning as it is happening right now.

I'm pretty amazed at the number of people who simply refused to swallow their pride and follow the honorable path by yielding during the Tournament of Roses melee. It was a pretty reckless display over a number of people who were then left unconscious and unable to be roused for quite some time by a team of Mercies and healers. (And that's coming from me, who's never been particularly known for looking before I leap.)

Neither Gloria nor Limerance calls for us to risk our lives in the pursuit of a friendly and honorable competition of arms. We honor the Goddess of Chivalry by knowing when we are beaten and graciously accepting it. We honor her by not putting our friends and compatriots at risk of inadvertently cutting us down on a field of competition because we refused to take the honorable course.

You'd think that we were on a field of true battle, how events played out. There is a place for unyielding heroism in this world -- a time when it truly honors Goria -- but that's against our enemies, not our friends.

Also, ten people on one isn't particularly honorable, either.

My body still aches, and having read other journals, I am offering my thanks to Lagoma, and to her Mercies, among them Princess Sophie Valardin, Mother of Mercy of Arx. To Softest Whisper Saedrus. To Knight of Solace Thena Grayhope. To Countess Reigna Keaton, and, I am, sure, others I've missed - I beg forgiveness as I was for the longest time struggling to actually be awake and aware when I was being treated.

Ours was a most glorious melee, but it would have been less so if not for the tireless efforts of those who stood at the ready to care for us.

Count Kael Keaton,

I would be honored to sample pies with you. You only need to forewarn me when we intend to be taste testers for your wife. I will not eat anything that day, lest I have to be rolled down the street back to my rooms.

Dame Alexis did take quite the beating when she defended me in the melee. I am glad she is okay and survived that. That was so many blows. Baron Silas took the quite the beating too when he guarded me. I seemed to be the number one target in that melee. I feel a bit bad for my brave defenders. I could be offended by being such a target, but I am flattered.

Also, thanks Baron Silas and Dame Alexis!

I am recovering in the House of Solace.

I am very grateful for the healers. I was tended to by Princess Sophie, Lady Eirene, Softest Whispers Saedrus, Mistress Thena and Lady Reigna.
Thank you, I would have a short and very painful life without you. I don't think I can't count the number of times that Lady Eirene and Princess Sophia have tended to my wounds.

I am still hurting, but I am doing much better. I realize that I was foolish to stay in the battle so long. The rush of the fight and my Grayson pride, kept me going until I fell.

I must congrats Prince Talen on winning, he is a very talented fighter, but also a very clever one.

And I must congrats High Lord Victus, who also is an amazing fighter, but even more impressively he had the admiration of the people.

Royal duties have kept me from the journals but I would be remiss if I did not recognize Princess Alarissa and Lady Monique for their most excellent event they held at the Valardin Estate recently, the Night of White. It was a gathering not to be forgotten for some time and I enjoyed myself thoroughly!
