Back in town a few days, already seen so many new faces. So far everyone has been polite and (more imporantly) smart. I just cannot suffer fools. How long before I lose my temper again because of someone else's stupidity? Anger has already cost me too many friends. It's made me too many enemies, too many bad first impressions, though I'm not sure I care what idiots think of me.

It's only a matter of time before some idiot pisses me off and I lose it again. I guess I'll just have to do my best to keep it together. At least booze helps.

One may believe that I jump onto the first challenge when thrown, though it is also a level of seeking movement and something to do that is not simply sitting and watching everything pass us by. Our time here is short. Seize what you can and find the purest moment of joy that you can, when you can.

Mine was found tonight in a challenge to head out to the snow and attempt to sled upon the icy hill of the Plaza of Coin. Lady Kalani Seliki, Princess Sabella Grayson, Lady Zoey Kennex, Prince Baldessare Velenosa, and Lady Tila Sanna. Thank you all for a moment of escape from everything else weighing over our heads, for just some simple fun in the snow.

An additional thank you for those that came out for the pub crawl, Lady Kiera Wyvernheart, the bloody mercy Carmen Harol of the Crimson Blades, and Lady Emberly Crovane.

Lani, there is either a snowball in your future or a drink. We have yet to determine which.

Sabella, we will need to talk about the cease fire between our guards.

An amazing impromptu pub crawl for my cycle day was had, there was much whiskey shared and drunken over the period of wandering the city.
Thank you to all that came out, especially to those already in Traders Tavern when the troop followed in. Their patience for what followed along is most appreciated.

The wisest generals know how little they know.

The necessity of believing with little or no knowledge should make us more concerned with carefully information ourselves than constraining others. Those who have not thoroughly examined to the bottom all their own tenets must confess they are unfit to prescribe to others. Those who have fairly and truly examined the same know that, past doubt, there is no reason for others to follow or believe them, else by the dint of hope that similar circumstances grace them. A general may only know themselves and presume from observation others.

If men were better instructed, they would be less imposing.

Relationship Note on Sunaia

A belated note on Sunaia and Pasquale's wedding, which has come and gone without much fanfare.

I am very pleased with this match - it seems a good match for both of them, and for our houses.

The wedding was beautiful, and though we will miss Sunaia around House Ashford, we expect she'll be happy in her new home.

Relationship Note on Tibault

I seem to always be missing Count Tibault, it saddens me this, but I shall continue to hold on to hope, and pray that we will finally have a chance to see each other. I have missed my adoptive father. I hope he and the house have been doing well here in Arx while I was away, back home in Brighthold.

Five of thirteen statuettes finished. I have eight more to do... Too bad I'm having trouble deciding who to make a statuette of next.

It's been my birthday today scholar, and despite it being the first one spent away from home since for as long as I can remember, it's been truly one of the best. My patron turned up in the courtyard of Byrne Manor on the back of a Duskshire mustang which was his gift to me to mark the day, and we took him out for a ride in the forest. It was quite wonderful of him to remember my telling of how much I had missed having a horse since arriving in Arx, and so much more thoughtful a gift than sending me a bolt of cloth which I would then have felt duty-bound to fret upon.

My current project has been reading through the whites. The whites were random people mention my subjects. The whites of my subjects. I feel like an outsider looking in on the lives of other people. But isn't that what I wanted to be when I opened my shop? I feel like a ghost, maybe. Displaced out of time. Still, at an ungodly hour I was reading someone's whites when inspiration struck me and I immediately rushed to my forge and to my tools.

Another family dinner in the books. It wasn't boring, scholar. That's all I can say about that..

Also...NEILDA IS BACK! I've never been so excited to have my best friend home! Well--again. I'm always excited to have her home. Now to have a sit down, figure out where she's been this time. I always enjoy our story swapping.

Dear Scholar,

I went today to meet with another who has a love for books that rivals my own. In the course of my journey I encountered their brother.

Today.. I survived a northern death hug. Praised be the gods.

Tomorrow... I wonder what awaits me.

For everyone. Might you allow House Sanna to offer a solution to if one might fly. Male or not.

From what started as an amusing means to of a discussion to how we would properly continue conversation with a dear friend, near family (they might as well be family)

We will be hosting an event: Redrain makes you fly.

More information to come.

Scholar, last time I sat with you, I discussed curiosity and teaching. I suppose it should be little wonder that in sating that curiosity with a skim through recent journals that I find myself teaching. I certainly didn't expect the combination of my husband, my twin, and peacocks to be the subject.

While I was not present for the exchange between Neilda and Haakon, I feel I know them both well enough to make a few assumptions:
1. My sister is, in fact, a being that needs to be given leave to soar. I have written a journal to this point in the past. She is also no bird expert (for such things, I would refer to Duke Aiden), leading me to believe that her prior experience with Duke Michael's peacock, Sir Struttington, and her disdain for limitations led to a thought process along the lines of "dazzling bird plus freedom equals peacock and flying." Side note, now that I think about it, Nel and Strut are of similar disposition - though my sister has yet to peck my hand for a grape.
2. Nel's use of "fly" to equate with freedom, soaring, isn't appropriately applied to peacocks in the way it might be applied to gulls or eagles or ravens. While peacocks can become airborne, their flight is largely limited to getting to their high roosting places and safely descending back to the ground.
3. My husband recognized the implied meaning and incongruity of my sister's words and responded correctly within the context.
4. The context being a deadly fight in which economy of language is important.

In hindsight, Scholar? I should have expected this combination. Have you met my sister or my husband? That really is all anyone should need to keep in mind.

Relationship Note on Haakon

To my Lord Haakon of House Eswynd,

Peacocks, like most males, may fly if you launch them from the right angle. The problem is that, like most males, they have a problem landing after falling a great distance.

Warm Regards,

General Piccola of House Tessere.

Listen, you try sounding sane while you're busy avoiding a mace heading straight into your face while your brother-in-law is yelling at you not to play with your food. I was under a lot of pressure at the time, don't judge me!

Relationship Note on Haakon

I don't mean to sound disrespectful, but peacocks and peahens both fly. Quite well, actually. You can find them on rooftops and in trees just like you would crows or sparrows. Beware peacocks in a tree, by the way. Its a terrifying lesson to learn the hard way.
