Golden shimmer from green
A flash in darkness shown
Twin moons in their sheen
From the shadows called your own

To the ones as always help, thank you.
To the ones as is helping now, thank you.
To the ones as is scheming while they help, thank you.
To the ones as is just scheming, please don't get in the way of the ones as is helping.
To the ones as is making it worse - and there's always some - pray I never find out who you are.

I spent years as a kid on them streets, Scholar, and six winters of it alone before the Ulbrans took me in. If a friend hadn't sneaked food to a starving child when she could, I wouldn't be here now. She's feeding more hungry people now than we've seen before - the bakery's full of people, all making bread - and I'm making sure she can keep doing it. It's not much, but then we're just Lowers folk ourselves without armies or lands or titles or trades or training. I'm just glad she got the lease on the bakery when she did, otherwise we couldn't even do that much.

Yes, that's what I was saying. You're pirates trying to plunder. Thanks for agreeing with me, I knew we could come to a mutual understanding.

We can also agree I'm a shitty mercenary since you think being a mercenary means taking advantage of starving poor people. Sellswords actually make coin from taking advantage of well-fed rich nobles who want more people to stand on the front lines and die for them, which sounds incredibly familiar for some mysterious reason. I think the reason for the mystery is that you're not paying nearly enough. Probably because you're pirates.

Mercenaries that spend their time taking advantage of starving poor people that can't pay them are what we call 'incompetent fucking morons'.

What a wonderfully beautiful idea! You're helping to teach new skills, provide others with work so they are not feeling as if they aren't able to provide for their own, and show that you aren't scared of getting your hands dirty in your offer to feed folk yourself.

Thrax is lucky to have such a supportive house supporting them and Blackshore is made all the stronger with a Minister of War such as yourself.

I have not had sleep in two nights.

It should have been easy. Two days ago, the Marquessa invited me into her villa, provided a room, and gave me the command she promised. My response was probably less gracious than it should have been, but I gave what I could muster at the time. I took the rest of the day to meet the men, and they seem sturdy and capable. The bed was comfortable, and I ate my fill.

I could not sleep.

The next day, I awoke, and took a run. Three times did I run about the quarter; three times I took aim in the training center. I was exhausted, so I took the time to walk back to the villa to prepare. A servant had suggested a dress, but it was tight and uncomfortable. I went to dinner; I met Cosimo and Nurie for the first time since I left Iriscal; and I met Prince Gaspar for a second time.

I still could not sleep.

I know not what gives my spirit anxiety. Perhaps it is the city itself – it is vast and daunting – which is as different from Iriscal as the woods and plains. I feel the need to leap upon my horse and ride away from here, as far as I can. But to give up what has been freely given is a craven’s foolishness, and I am not so divorced from my family that I have forgotten my first lesson.

**Osiamo**.

I didn't exactly have to /try/. I have eyes. They're what I use to keep reading all these attempts at trying to sell and then justify a scheming political move.

If you want to give assistance, donate to the Faith's efforts, or the Crafters Guild. It's not a generous offer to let desperate, hungry people go put themselves at risk to make you money, and then tell them they can donate /their/ coin to the cause. It's trying to grow your domain, your power, and your coffers by taking advantage of a city-wide crisis to convince crownsworn to shift their allegiances.

I have left my beautiful city of Tor, and put my Estate filled with Creeping Terror roses behind me to attend to the needs of my family, and to shadow my nieces, my kin, and provide for them the same courtesy my father did for me: To see what they see, and cut the weeds aside so The Path is clear as can be.
It is in Arx I, once more, find the company of my family, and I recognize it has...perhaps, been too long since I've properly socialized, for one of my station in life.

I come to Arx the day after a riot, I hear the voices of my Peers, and look about at all the many faces whom are concerned. There is nothing like a properly tended book. Nothing. I will give you an example:

If Group X needs Y-Amount of Z-Food, every A-amount of weeks. If you have a properly tended book, you know this. You know this. You know these facts, and you know that with these facts you can now restore a balance and keep a balance - you will need B, C, D, and E. B-Amount of Coin, C-Ways this coin to funnel in, D-Amount of laborers for the goods to reach Group X. At the end, you are left with E. E can be debt, or profit. In a properly tended book? You know this. This, is a Beautiful Thing.

It is by this wisdom I join my family, and see before mine own eyes much work to do to serve my King.

My grandchildren,

If people are hungry, feed them now while you work to address the cause of the problem. Words aren’t filling except to stoke egos and anger. The people make for poor champions when they’re distracted by hunger. It can find their hearts turned or compelled to act against their own simply for food.

Give charity now, so that the people can eat. Give generously from the bounty you have without regret or delay so that people can eat, for charity is honorable as it lifts up the people. But charity is not the solution to the problem, merely an expedient temporary fix. Just as we quickly grab the hand of one who is nearly tumbling over the side of a ship without second thought, but then we fix the problem at the core afterwards.

Work with all to find the solution to build prosperity for all and create stronger bonds between us, so the problem of hunger is addressed for the future.

Mother Gild compels us to do this, this is honorable. Remember the Tidelord will be judged according to our words and actions, to see if our hearts still hold honor.

A person's value is not determined by their skill in a trade.

If that were true I wouldn't know as many Lords and Ladies who couldn't lace their own trousers or corsets without a team of servants.

When you design a world where some are inherently more valuable than others, you breed resentment. If you're a noble, you do not get to tell someone the path to a good and decent life is in their blood, sweat and tears.

Systems and handouts and charity will only stifle the growth of the divide. It will still exist. The Have's and the Have-Nots. Your status quo.

As it goes -- let me be clear -- I don't particularly give two shits.

I killed my way to where I am, I never lied to myself that anyone who called themselves a ruler or leader gave a fuck about some mercenary who cost them less than a bar of rubicund. I've always known I can't make the world a better place with the skillset I have -- just bleed it a little while I'm here.

But the thing you must remember is this:

Your enemies did not do this to you. You've been doing this to yourselves for hundreds of years. It's been waiting on a thin point for a long time. Waiting for just the right push.

To all parties in need of food:
I have directed my sailors to begin fishing and crabbing local waterways, riverbeds, and coastlines. Though few of these men appear approachable and will likely stink, they are not selfish and know to share their bounty with the needy. Should you see our family sigil upon banner or tabard, please do not hesitate to approach them and ask to be fed.
Men and women of the sea are certainly resourceful. Give them water, salt, and any number of molluscs and they are capable of preparing a flavorful meal. If you catch them mid-preparation, they will likely regale you with tales of their travels and encounters abroad.
They can teach you to tie proper knots, sink lures, bait hooks, and dive for scallops. They can identify healthy animals from diseased, shuck clams, and assist you in gutting and cleaning fish for consumption.
In spirit of the above, you are welcome to contact this note's writer and I will do my best to ensure you pull a feast-worthy trophy from the water.

Keep oaths. Serve the gods. Help each other. It is better to encourage each to offer what they may, than to sputter impotently in indignation.

Some may help with coin, or food, or by teaching skill in sewing. Others teach reaping. The shark does not ask the minnow how to hunt. Let each do their part as they may.

To ask for help does not make a person weak.

To offer help does not make a person foolish.

Accepting help does not make a person a failure.

Needing to provide help does not make a person incompetent.

One can never prepare for everything, unfortunately life is filled with things people can not possibly imagine. What we can do is learn from each occurrence when we were forced to bend beneath the pressure of a new situation. We have bent in the past, but we have never and will never break beneath the weight. We will always come out stronger, wiser, and more prepared for the future.
