As to the centipedes, that is deeply worrisome.

But the wicked are greedy and venal. The tide of stinging insects -- a horror that could only be the product of nefarious forces -- struck out in the open. It was an act of terror meant to break our resolve. They wanted to show us the extent of their diabolic power.
We are given a choice. We can succumb to the wickedness all around us. We could tear each other apart, shatter the bonds of the Compact, and descend into barbarism. I know to some this is a tempting path. There are hurts that have not been tended. Some may think they would stand to rise high in a war of all against all. Others may think they have nothing left to lose. But this is a fool's gamble.
We are only strong when we stand together. I would call upon my fellows to offer succor to those in need so we may rally together under the same banner. The enemy exploits the fractures in our society to drive us apart, so we must tend those wounds so we may be strong enough to resist their ongoing campaign. We can only build a more durable Compact once we have fended off the forces of darkness, and we may only do so if we are one people.
I will aid those as I am able. Mine is not a wealthy county, but we are at war with forces that seek the destruction of all. I will be faithful to my oaths to the Compact, and work for the good of all.

Shit has hit the rafters a few times in the last fortnight, and before that the rise was threatened but didn't crest over until recently. Testing the mettle of friendships, nothing I've forged between me and others has been found wanting. It's not a thrill or smug recap; it's a relief, sacred and profound and I'm just so damn grateful for it all. If the world ends tomorrow, I've got hands that will hold me through it, but more besides to fight next to to keep it moving into the next sunrise. No small thing, that. Not a small thing at all.

There will be a slow and steady burn, or there will be a conflagration. The wise will proceed with caution.
On an unrelated note, Decus Votorum is currently fixing all household necessities at cost--and freely, for those unable to pay. None should go hungry, especially because of a leaky pot.

There were people out there that got hurt. People who nearly died. People trying to save other people, people working long hours into the morning trying to heal those people, people trying to /feed/ those people enough that they wouldn't burn everything down. Where were you? Were you down there? Were you doing more than waving a sword around and ordering people to stop being angry about starving even if you were?
Are you all sitting up top chattering over brunch about how unreasonable and unruly the peasants have become? Tut, tut, tut over your tea? If you've got enough energy to pay heralds to shout your proclamations or write journals about how unsafe you feel in your big giant manors, I'm going to assume you weren't actually doing anything to try to help. The nobles, the commoners, and the godsworn who were doing that are all too busy trying to heal or sleep off the exhaustion from healing everyone else.
That's right. Prima Shard is being uppity. Everyone knows most of the Peerage would never just sit around behind their walls and only show up once things were safe again in order to try to exploit fear and pain to their own advantage. Upjumped commoners and all that. Surely, if I had been raised properly, I would know better than to dare criticize nobles being predictable nobles.

Looting of homes and even noble estates has taken place.
At these times one must remember that Arx is not the home of the Peers. It is the home of the Royal Court. We are but guests in the capital, though I suspect many see Arx as their home now. Like all guests, we may offer aid if we wish it but retribution and condemnation of the commons of a domain not our own would be rather rude for a guest.
It is my hope that the commons remember that difficult times are when a liege will spill blood and silver for their well being. As surely as when the banners of war are called, the pain of our people is a cause to expend will and resources, for what other purpose does our wealth serve if not our people?
For the finely dressed luminaries of the Compact. Perhaps now is a time to pair fashion with sensibility. It would be terrible to hear of someone stripped to the smallcloths for the fortune of fabric covering their skin.

Not that I'm surprised to see it.
