Asher Grayhope and I wed on May 6th of 1013. For anyone who is curious or wishes to speak ill of this union on account of my recent divorce and my ex-husband's untimely death, yes, I made sure his arm was cold when I identified it.

Some people are truly disgusting. May the Gods and Spirits have mercy on their souls - though I doubt they have to begin with in order to say something that incredibly vile.

Final plans for my harbor project have been submitted. I only wish I could have gone to witness the groundbreaking myself. Alas! But this is not about me. I look forward to seeing the good that comes of the place.

The pantry of my home is nearly empty now as I have instructed Keski and Aletta to take most of what we had to help some of those hardest hit by the current state of affairs. I can manage on some bread and soup for a while I think.

I went to my first ball and climbed a mast in a dress! It was wild. I didn't win, but it was still a great deal more fun than I had expected. I even danced and managed not to make a complete fool of myself. I don't think those back home would believe it!

The arrival of the abandoned knight, Sir Volgan, brought very surprising news. When Sister Dianna received the message that the knight carried and shared it with those present, the news was most encouraging. If this proceeds smoothly, it will certainly strengthen the Compact and the Houses that take the initiative will no doubt benefit. I know I have much to discuss with my sister on this to see if there is anything we can do to assist on the matter. I am looking forward to the progress that can be made.

I'm thinking I should perhaps stay away from others until the baby is born. I find I am far more grumpier then usual, and more emotionally charged. From crying more, to getting frustrated and upset far more easily. I am deeply sorry to anyone that I have been rude to, upset, or confused. Hopefully this will be over very soon. Any day now, says the midwife.

The boil may have calmed to a simmer, but that doesn't mean the fires have stopped burning. This is Arx, the wealthiest fucking city in Arvum last I checked, and our idea of fixing this problem is to slap a bandage over it, thus far.

The Wards all flourish. The Upper Boroughs is a haven with the up-and-coming. And then there's the heap of inequity that is the Lowers, forgotten and swept under the rug until the moments when it's inconvenient, and then forgotten all over again when the inconvenience passes.

Many nobles I know won't set foot in the Lowers. You worry about being harmed? Being robbed? These things happen on the regular all throughout the city, and the only thing that increase that severity in the Lowers is the sense of desperation.

I know I'm from the Lowers because I've done things I'm not proud of in order to scrape the bits together for a meal. To choose between going hungry and going a winter without a roof over my head. So when you recoil away from the Lowers, you recoil away from me. What's worse? When you recoil away from the Lowers, you cheapen the oath by which we're sworn. Are their oaths no stronger than your own? Is their blood a different shade?

Go. See for yourself. If you feel unsafe or frightened, I will personally escort you the entire way, free of charge, so long as you keep a respectful tongue and your looks of revulsion muted.

If you feel unsafe with what you've seen, imagine how living in these conditions wears at the body and mind. And then imagine just how long this problem has been festering.

The recent problems that have been caused by the whirlpool slowing trade and the resulting food supply issues have made me wonder if the City of Arx itself is too large and with too great a population? Is the Compact making itself vulnerable by concentrating so much of it's command structure into one place?

Anabele is worried about those in the lowers who are suffering through the whirlpool the most. Hopefully my actions on the Road, securing the boarders and improving the trade routes in Tristfell will help smooth things over. Cahal was hepful, having us out hunting in the Gray Forests so that we may catch a few hares for the stores. Blackram is doing what they can as well, something about directing the flow of their graineries. Lord Cahal has far more smarts than myself but I understood the basics of what he was refering to. I acted as beater, scaring up and driving the Hare's in the field, while Ana and Cahal used a Hawk and Dog to fetch the scared up game. Cahal's Dog hickory was very spot on, but his hawk Kiko was slightly tempermental. I don't think she was used to being handled by Ana. I promised her we'd try again soon. She'll get the hang of it.

Relationship Note on Drake

It is an awkward feeling to want to cheer the success of an ally and friend, but also to feel wary of cheering too loudly because of the consequences of his success. Were it such that I could simply cheer martial skill and good showmanship! I would prefer merely praising the deeds of long training and diligence if there were not other baggage attached to it. But that is the challenge of being a champion, I suppose. My days in the arena are long behind me, but sometimes watching a bout in the arena takes me back.
A fine fight the other day.

Relationship Note on Dagny

Hello Scholar. I want to tell you about the time Lady Dagny saved me from an almost very cranky caribou. What? Don't laugh. They get very cranky.

See. I had gone to gather some flowers and well, I decided to have a nap against this rock. But you see, it wasn't actually a rock. Shut up scholar! I had lots of fur on so didn't feel this one was warm or furry. The antlers? well, it was near the brambles so I assumed they were branches. Anyway!

There I was getting all snoozy and comfortable and all of a sudden Dagny, I mean, Lady Dagny jumped out of the bushes screaming and brandishing her sword, running straight towards me. Spirits! I thought she planned to kill me. But no! Instead, she stabbed my rock. It shuddered and groaned before collapsing even further.

Yes scholar. She was pleased with the kill, until she realized I wasn't strong enough to help her haul it back to Bonespire.

I remember fondly many tales from my girlhood that were told by one of the many tutors we had in Farhaven. But perhaps one of the ones that ring so true now is the tale about a young woman who desired a great many things and the lengths she'd go to acquire them. She would wheedle, she would deal and bargain, and sure enough, she'd always get what she wanted no matter the cost to herself and those around her, to those relationships she enjoyed, never realizing what she was doing outside of that victory of hers.

For a time she'd be satisfied with whatever trinket or lover or pretty little thing she had obtained, content to bask in another victory despite that dearly paid price, for everything has a price. A victory that slowly, but surely as always, turned to ash in her mouth. A victory that soon became boredom with that once coveted desire of hers. And from that boredom would blossom that need, that urge to go hunting for something new to spike that feeling inside of her back up. She would take and take and take until there was nothing left. Until there was no one left for her to turn to, to deal with, or simply enjoy their companionship. The young woman had burned every bridge in her pursuits, ruined everything in her lust and greed to have every single thing she wanted.

There is no happy ending to this tale, no. The young woman did not learn the error of her ways, for it was far too late for her to be anything more than what she was, hollow and aching, hungry, and unsatisfied. I always wondered what became of her, this one who took everything for granted and discarded people and things with such wild abandon, but my tutor would simply shake their head and smile. And gods and spirits, it was such a sad smile. The lesson remains, though, to be careful with everything and to appreciate all we have, great or small. And to give freely all that we can afford to give.

The caravel party last night was so fun! I made the attempt of climbing of the mast--You know, because ALL GARDENS HAVE BOATS IN THEM--To retrieve a prize from the crow's nest. I--failed. But it was fun. A whole lot of fun! Thank you Kieran for being my date for the evening, even if I did end up ditching you!

Many have, upon seeing me abroad in the city, welcomed me back. I assure you all, I wasn't away. There are ever so many ledgers in the city in need of scrutiny and balancing and sometimes the work just needs done by dint of long hours and candles burned low. For those of you with interests in tallow and lamp oil, you're most welcome.

The troubles that visit us now are not new. And even to say they 'visit us now,' suggests they were gone. They were not. Troubled times encourage all of us, high and low, rich and poor, to look closely and seek the truth in what we face. The truth I have seen is that no gift of compassion or grace is too small to offer. They are all necessary.

The Crown pulls levers that are large and move slowly. While those gears mesh, I am happy to coordinate and support efforts of those moving more quickly - the Faith, the Crafter's Guild, and the Commoner's Council, and others to be certain.
