The tournament was well worth the broken ribs! I pray that all of our future melees are on the tournament field and not on the battlefield.

Near a year since I came to Arx from Southport, winter of '09.

A lot to reflect on, and even in this I find myself a changed man.

I think the city has made me a more careful person, and more patient...I never thought back in the navy that I'd be spending so much time buried in libraries, burning the candle at both ends.

I think it's also killed my youthful optimism, I'm afraid; I've seen some nightmarish things, and learned things about myself that I wished weren't so. Had my view of the city turned upside down, twice.

Luckily, I have my friends to remind me it's still an adventure, and my crew hasn't mutinied on me just yet.

Going to prop my boots up at the Trader's Tavern, order an ale, and have myself a toast to the next years. Cheers.

Is there any lie quite as adorable as "I don't associate with criminals"?

Except when I say it, of course.

/I/ would never associate with those sorts.

Relationship Note on Joscelin

I have a confession to make, I spent a bit of silver on myself for my birthday and purchased a pair of gold earrings with emeralds and the absolutely gorgeous pale Seliki pearls from the Atelier. When I was a child I could only dream of owning something so wonderous. Now it's a reality and I thank The Guildmaster for making such a wonderful piece of jewelry. I will most definitely be back for another when I have an occasion to celebrate.

It is nice to see commoners giving the Champion's Guild some work. They are hiring champions, right?

Relationship Note on Kael

I am not a fan of the Grand Melee. Oh, I know it is a great honor to Gloria, but do we not have enough enemies to prove our devotion to her, rather than beating upon one another?

Still. It does provide my healers with plenty of practice.

Kael showed so well this year! He endured to the final three, surviving warriors of near legendary renown. I am so very happy for him, despite the bruises cuts and overall aches he is going to have to deal with.

The final three.

I still dislike Grand Melees.

I'm making a point to visit more shrines these days. It's easy to take comfort in Mangata's shrine, but life is complicated. Without irritations we wouldn't have pearls.

I first picked Limerance's shrine because I was least comfortable there in ways that are legible to me. I love my people and my family. I want stability for them. There's a lot of limerance in the bonds we all make together. We tie ropes to lash down cargo in storms. We win them to safe harbor where there family waits, and people who can repair ships.

When my mother died, my father was there for us. My grandmother, my yaya. I was there for my brother, he for me. Our cousin was a comfort.

I will not leave my family without comfort if I get lost at see or if some illness take me. I shall form some bond with another who will swear loyalty to my people. We will have children, who will have many cousins -- I have reminded my brother how much of a joy it was to grow up with Kalani, so he is on task for that. I'm not leaving my children in the care of a nanny -- yes, those of you who cared for me a child, many of you were dear, do not doubt that. but I want children to have parents and to learn from us all the possibilities available in their lives. My mother and father were not mirror souls. We all grew up together. I can see how young they were, then.

So it is Limerance I struggled with. Which ropes to use. Which knots. How much freedom I have. This is a very human thing.

The Shrine of the Thirteenth? It is the least comfortable in ways that are inscrutable to me. I visit it and feel I am being watched. My skin crawls. I see many reflections. It is good to endure these things and understand what makes me uneasy. I am become more brave. That's just a coat maybe, to wear in that place. Once I am brave? I will be more free to consider all of the corridors and what they mean. All of the different angles.

I thank everyone who has talked with me in these places.

Any who threaten the compact threaten my people and my family. Know this. I will visit Mangata's shrine and beg her to end you should you fray these knots. And I will take comfort in leading people who will end you.

Relationship Note on Kaia

Sweet Lady Kaia. If you do plan to enter the Grand Melee next year, we shall have to prepare you for such in Southport's Training Centre with your cousin and my fellow Malvici. Not a problem, I am sure. Especially with the likelihood of spending more time in the Lyceum wards.

Although I did hear you are learning archery very quickly. Perhaps that is... safer.

I expect I'll be resting for a while, what with being stabbed and all. Still, it was a good bout while it lasted. Not sure it was worth the bleeding, truth be told, but I expect it was more useful as a spar than a dozen one on one matches with blunted weapons.

In the bits in between, while you're having a breather, it's a funny thing to see how folk pair up and pick their targets. I never was much good at all that. If it's a real battle, that's one thing, I've been in enough of those that I got a feel for things, more or less. But these things, they're more like politics or something, aren't they? You don't have two sides, you've a whole bunch of them and you never know where you're standing with them. I expect it pays to go in with a plan.

Relationship Note on Silas

As the military liason to the Iron Guard for House Redrain, I've had an opportunity to work with Baron Silas. But one does not appreciate his skills until you get to fight side by side with him at the Grand Melee in the Tournament of Roses.

You'll probably laugh but during the fight, what drew me to his side was that sudden realization of 'he made my bedroom set' flashed through my mind. I couldn't leave the man that delivered my favorite wedding gift unprotected.

Minister Verity proved herself both in the field as my personal scout and to the people of Blanchard as their minister. She was and continues to be instrumental to the Blanchard Household. Whatever is the business that keeps her away from Arx, we wish her success and a swift return.

I recently received an advance copy of Duchess-Consort Vanora's book concerning marriage. I found it a worthy read, and would recommend it to any Peer who is, or soon to be coming of age. I also think it would be a useful companion for any Head of House or Voice new to their position, like so many of us were during the time of the King's Rest.

The tournament was very exciting and much more bloody than I anticipated. I knew I had not the strength or skill to compete in such a contest, but I do not know that I have the courage of heart to watch, either. Still, congratulations to the winners and all who competed for showing their valor and honoring Glory. Arx has many fine warriors, and I am proud to know many of them.
