Relationship Note on Helena

My cousin, Princess Helena, has recorded a poem from one of her readings here that gave me pause, like I could almost see the images and feel the grief anew. With construction underway for our new library, it is my hope we might find someone to put those words to art so it can find a place of distinction there. Unless, of course, I might convince her to allow us to frame her original writing of it instead.

<OOC: There are many splotches of ink on this entry, as if the pen was left to rest in place for long periods of time.>

Um.
Treaties and hospitality, fine.

Coinage, I think.
Roads, unless we really count that as a subset of hospitality.
Building a public building together.
Taxes, weirdly enough, I think. Fair and equitable.
A sack of flour unweighed.
A statement of obscure fact by a Scholar?
A priest.
Something that represents the command structure of a military unit?
A map (or is that just transmission of knowledge by another name?)
A pie or a potion made by an apothecary, consumed without hesitation.
A letter of credit or some other representation of a bank.

Eleven, yes? But are they all truly distinct, or merely variations on a theme? I must do more thinking on this!

Safety always comes at a price. Usually that price is freedom; yours, or someone else's, or both. The trick, I guess, is figuring out just how much you're willing to give up in exchange for being safe. Or, at least, feeling safe, because the truth is no one is ever entirely safe, no matter how much they sacrifice. That's not how the world is. That's not how life is. After all, if you decide to lock yourself up in a stone cage your whole life, you're only safe so long as the cage stays intact. You're only taken care of until your caretakers are gone. And if things break, then what? Then what will you do?

Almost everyone gives up a little freedom. We make rules. We make compromises to get along. Some peoples make more rules than others, but almost everyone has some kind of line, some limit, somewhere, even if they run off into the woods to live entirely alone. It's a matter of who decides where the line is. Who sets the limits. Who determines the cost.

The Compact needs change. It can't keep going exactly the way it has, not forever. There are things out there that are coming to break your walls down. Either you're going to find another wall to hide behind, and damn the cost, or you're going to learn how to truly stand on your own feet and fight back.

And damn the cost.

These are curious times, when the sum of one day's events is so large as to thoroughly obliterate memory of the day prior. I might have thought a vision momentous one day, but it is overtaken the next by the threat of subjugation of the Compact entire. I fear what monstrous deed or news will come tomorrow and bid me forget that.

I don't look forward to much. Never have. One day after the next, one foot in front of the other.

Have to admit though, after all the fun news, I'll be interested in watching the world burn down around our heads.

Optimism is for assholes and nobility.

I have no words for the events of the Assembly, nor the fact that it seemed to have more twists than one of those trashy novels you can find at the gilded page in the fiction section.

Just looking at the eye of the Prophet however made me queasy, I glanced long enough to get a good look at all the inverted symbols of the pantheon, but afterword this sense of nausea hit me, and while not quite overpowering it was enough to put me off the whole rest of the event.

People may debate the options available to us and there are merits to all of them but the cost may be too high.

In short. I believe we can following the suggestion of Ashe and stand strong together as a Compact. The only way that accepted Brass's offer and have the Thraxian's agree would be with the help of the rest of the Compact to help them weather the economic upheaval.

I believe we should be wary of anyone making demands of us, even if the demands themselves seem benevolent enough. One demand can easily lead to another once you give in.

It's been a stressful day after a night of no sleep. The insanity that was the Assembly of Peers left me with a feeling of dread that I can't really shake. Every shadow I see is a Cardian or Empiral agent that wants to snatch me up and take me away...I hate it. I hope the King can sort through this and make me feel safe again.

I read this last week at my little poetry reading, but after last night's events, and Ashe's reminding us to remember, I thought I would write it here, as well. Thank you to all of those who remember and who have joined in the symbolic wearing of copper. Thank you to Prince Lorenzo for the idea and to those such as Dame Ida, Captain Evaristo, and our Legendary Tailor Petal, for ensuring that all of us can carry a little bit of copper-hued hope with us at all times.

The Day that Copper Fell

Somewhere, a clock stops ticking; quiet is its mourning song
Somewhere, murmurs a lament from lips silent everlong

Somewhere, shakes the ground below a temple black of stone
Somewhere, waits a paramour, feeling evermore alone

Somewhere, shatters a glass-wrought city, shards strewn far apart
Somewhere, stills for breathless moments a forever-beating heart

Somewhere, a castle from another “when” arrives in our “today”
Somewhere, a spark of brightest light bears part of the Dream away

Everywhere, hearts are broken, and one day, tales we will tell
of where we were, and who we were, the day that Copper fell.

There are many who may think me naive or that I am speaking of things I know little about.

Perhaps they are right.

Never the less, I have an opinion and this is it.

Our guests have come to us because -they- need -us-. They see our potential and must harness it for their own needs. If they could take on the darkness coming on their own, they would not be here. This makes us important.

This makes us important.

Some may say that we don't have enough magic or power or strength to fight the darkness on our own. That it will defeat us.

Even our guests cannot be sure of this. Even they consider the possibility, however slim it might be in THEIR eyes, that we may prevail.

An ancestor of my House, Father Alessandro Rubino, wrote the Canticle of the Long Vigil, wherein he states plainly of things he foresaw.

"beware the coming war between a Platinum Empire, the Triarchs and the lords of the sky"

And guess who is here?

They come to us when we are not at our full potential because they see it already. They know. They know the Compact has faced off much and can yet do more.

We're weak, some may say.

A wise man told me, "Believing you will win is half the battle. It takes place in your mind."

Believe we are stronger than we know. Believe we can be more than we are.

And we will be.

There are times in one's life when the moral choice and the pragmatist's choice are clear as crystal.

I take this as a sign of Skald's sense of humor, for they are inevitably both awful in their unique ways.
