There is a long way to go still and things to put in order before Spring comes and work begins. A night doesn't pass that I sleep through. I wake from dark dreams of raids and things stirred in remote reaches. And awake in the darkness, my mind seizes on all the things left to be done. Material to move. Ground to prepare. Overtures to make. Defense to arrange. Meetings to conduct. Missives to write.
It is not without trepidation that I look ahead. Folk have registered concerns, grave and real concerns. But I am awed by the ingenuity and effort and ability of the Compact acting together individually (strange as that sentiment is) to address needs in every corner of Arvum. A humbling experience, truly.
In the darkness, with my mind chattering away at the myriad ways things can unravel into disaster, two things are clear to me. One, I am afraid. And two, cliff-diving is as good a preparation I could have had for this entire venture.

Punishment is meant to right something. It could be for sake of justice or honor. It could be for sake of revenge and anger. We need not be the ones demanding a punishment to exact it, nor is it quite the same as acting out of fear.
What punishment is not meant to do is make a person change. Sometimes we tell ourselves it is, that they'll know better because they're scared of being punished again. That isn't changing a person, who they are. That isn't making them better. That is making them scared.
Penance is something else. It is having a person go through the process of understanding something they have done wrong, of more than correcting the wrong, learning empathy for those who they have wronged. Penance is about helping a person, however painful the lesson may be. Often I have seen things called a penance that helps no one. That is a penalty to be paid like silver upon the magistrate's hand for a fine.
I did my share of penance, mostly but not always given by myself, before I realized that distinction. I did not always learn from it.
I know there are those who will disagree with my reasoning here. Perhaps they feel the way I have defined the words is inaccurate, or that I should have used different words to say the same thing. Perhaps they think these are the musings of a fool, which I couldn't deny.
Or perhaps, just perhaps, more people should consider what they want from the actions they take. Whether they seek punishment, or penance. What that means for them.

I am elbow-deep in research due to a troubling letter send from my elder brother (wherever he may be). However, dear Scholar, if you should happen to catch word of a good tale I might purchase, do let a Lady know. And don't play coy with me, you know precisely the sort I'm looking for. I know what you lot get up to when you aren't penning our little diatribes here.

What? Of course I sent it, Scholar. I wouldn't be so mean as to mention it and not send it.

I participated in all the games - archery: of which I have no skill and managed to NOT shoot off my own foot, or anyone else's; riddles: which I won, but was the only participant; and brawn: which has inspired me to use for training my own troops!
Thank you very much to Lady Acantha and Clearlake for setting this up!
Much fun!

I am excited to see what other beautiful creations Mistress Bianchi has in store. Gowns in violet, green and red. Vibrant colors, which suit me much better than tragic black. I shall always feel a glimmer of sorrow in the depths of my heart for those things which have been lost, but I feel that it is perhaps time for me now to move forward.

Arx is lovely but cannot compare in its man-honed beauty to the crystalline mountain air and expanse of sky found in the northlands. I am lit up within by excitement and also warmth, so touched at being asked to go along in such esteemed company. My quill and ink are at the ready.

I still don't believe you actually needed the help, however, as much as you wanted a break while someone else did the work of running ones of the games.

I took part in the archery competition, of course. It was wonderful. Lieutenant Carmen Harol won and I couldn't be happier. She actually split my arrow in two with one of her shots. A well deserved win if ever I saw one. I'm rather proud of her. We've been working hard on her skills with a bow and boy has her dedication shown.
We had to leave a little earlier because Tala stuffed herself full of sweets and drank three cups of cocoa in quick succession. I warned her about this before. But I told her if she really wanted to eat only sweets, just this once. I don't think she'll do that again.
