The only trouble with learning a new language, and beginning those lessons, is finding the correct place to practice the rudimentary grasp I have. It is not acceptable to try and order a whiskey in a faulty tongue anywhere. I can't go down to the docks and see who responds to it. What is a woman to do?

I have rarely seen such beautiful works as some of our artisans in this city produce. Simply admiring the collars of iridescite and gemstones cut to bring out their fire soothes a part of me I never knew existed. The exquisite details that Dame Ida Ferron folds into steel or rubicund defies belief. The Velvet Box continuously sells beautiful designs that speak to a spark of creativity hard to fathom.

We are spoiled in this city of ours.

I had a wonderful discussion with Princess Valencia, Lady Kenna and Duke Harlan yesterday. It was all about hope, bringing hope, and reasons for fighting - life, love, happiness, freedom, helping others for those things. Yes, yes, I'm paraphrasing, badly, and it is a very high level summary. I know.

I'm not looking for commentary here, just noting that it brought quite a few thoughts, most of them wonderful.

And I believe there will be a "come together" party at the Hart, which also makes me happy.

You better always come home! Otherwise your daughters are going to be awash in pink ribbons and gowns!

I woke this morning with a song in my head, pounding like a hangover and demanding to be set free. Some might blame the wine from last night was the cause of the pounding, but I would argue it was just the holy vintage setting me up with some inspiration.

<<Music notation included>>

I left upon the morning tide, (Sail, my lady, sail)
But from the storm I could not hide (Bale, my lady, bale.)
Black clouds filled the sky (Sail, my lady sail)
Hands of lightning stabbed from high (Bale my lady, bale.)
And then I cried out from my plight,
Mangata, love, won’t you show me a guiding light?
Send a beacon to cut through this fright,
Keep me safe, keep me warm…. watertight.

The winds did rage and blast (Sail, my lady, sail)
A hungry Terror tried to hold me fast, (Bale my lady, bale.)
Mangata's love filled and set me free (Sail, my lady, sail)
Though the storm raged all around me (Bale my lady, bale.)
Sea-love's voice thundered with might
No more need had I of fright
When the Sea Lady's will set right.
Kept me safe, kept me warm…. watertight.

I am under no obligation to ‘take’ anything, particularly something I didn’t ask for to begin with.

It was /breathtaking/. Every bit of it. The views from the mountain top were some of the best that I have ever seen within my lifetime. It was as though you could see all of Arvum everywhere you looked; and she was magnificent and glorious. The top of the mountain had a plateau, and if one were of mind, and had the means, it would be the perfect place for a griffon rookery, potentially.

We found other things there as well, but for that alone the trip was more than worth it. I'll be making detailed maps at some point, perhaps after I make another trip there. There's a cave yet to be explored, and I feel given what we discovered it is more than worth exploring. But that's for another time.

Humor, like food, comes in many flavors. Sometimes it takes an unusual palette to enjoy a particular joke.

My recommendation is to gauge your audience. Create art that entertains and inspires. For a joke is better received when others can appreciate the sentiment.

There are those that engage in humor to entertain themselves. I find this type of humor repellent for it is often at the expense of another.

I would rather laugh in the company of friends and family.

Relationship Note on Simone

Autumn sets the moment when the world comes alive again. Strange as it may seem, the turn of the seasons marks a beginning in the time of harvest. We may begin the calendar in the lengthening after the darkest days of the year, but the statement of fall marking a new beginning again is perfectly apt, I think.

A proper white Lycene wine, good company, and the best of stories marked my evening. I cannot ask for better than this -- friendship in the most beautiful, soothing surroundings. Even if certain things said left me at a temporary loss for words, all in the best of ways. We shall laugh at this when October creeps away to November. Before the first snows dance on the air, I will be glad for the cozy tidings we laid in the month with.

You always have been an emblem of hospitality.

Though this sounds so VERY aimed and pointed, it's not; this is just a musing.

Making a joke is, of course, an art form. Taking them is too.

I sit at my desk tonight writing a paper I am torn if I should write. On the one hand it seems prudent to see to the distribution of items I have accumulated in my time in Arx before heading to the upcoming events. On the other hand it almost feels like inviting in the idea that something of that permanent nature will occur. I prefer being the optimist but prudence seems wise.

I suppose having it in the blacks isn't a bad idea, just in case.

Such kindness is the norm and acquiring a healthy wardrobe part of the right of joining the city. You may count on some of the leading ladies to set the style and graciously share it. Chin up, smile on your face, greeting for all those you cross: these are the open secrets of success to setting roots down in Arx.

I only just arrived in town a couple of nights ago, but already it is beginning to feel like home. The people here are alarming kind and gentle, even the soldiers. Perhaps it is all the fancy new clothes and the coiffed hair? Or maybe the people of Arx are simply like this? I've had two dresses gifted to me in as many days, and I can hardly step from home without meeting someone kind and eager to help.

I am unsure how to properly handle such niceties. I do far better with a pack of dogs than a gaggle of people. But I will do my best to try to make my family proud.

Oh, and I suppose, in my excitement, I should make ready with some arrangements - just in case - which will also serve me well since I'll be involved in the Lodge after this.

In the untimely event of my death, all of my items and money go to Mason to do with as he sees fit - with a few exceptions.

* My sisters may go through and pick one thing for themselves.
* My weapons should be saved for my daughters and adopted children - to be doled out as they are ready to make use of them.
* I leave the care of the Society of Explorers in the care of Duke Aiden Rubino and Princess Alarissa Thrax - jointly.

Should something happen to both Mason and myself, I deem my children to be under the care of my sisters Reese and Sabella.

Today is the day! I cannot wait until we start our journey. I'll be traveling to the far side of Grayson lands, just beyond where Ashford lies, and then even just a little farther than that to explore a mountain range I've been past several times over, and just never had time to explore. Well, I've finally made time and some of the best companions are coming with me. Mason, Vitalis, Elloise, and Calaudrin will travel with me in this particular journey.

It'll be something new, something exciting, and how can it not be when I know that there is the excitement of of discovering something new over that ridge somewhere. I have been in the city for so long that I'd long since forgotten the call, I think. I cannot wait to breathe the fresh air of wilderness, and to see what new things lie in store.

Adventure Awaits!

I indulged myself in a few quiet hours at The Hoard, an aptly named room for the library in the Gold Order's Lair. Dame Alexis had graciously allowed me a key to the room some time ago and this or that kept me from properly visiting for long. With so much going on to keep me busy as of late, it was nice to slip off and get lost in some great tales and history for a bit. It has even given me some idea for the library Lorenzo and I hope to build near the Villa after our wedding!
