Relationship Note on Kenna

An offer would never have come, in any case.

Here is some advice, from one person to the next, you may heed it or toss it. I don't really care which.

You are going to meet a lot of people in this city. Not all of them will agree with you. Point in fact, many of them will have lots of differing opinions on many subjects. That doesn't automatically make them a bad person. Every experience will forge someone in a different way. I was taught at a young age that despite that, it doesn't hurt to remain polite if you can possibly help it. You never know when you may reach out a hand for aid, and the person you were rude to is the hand outstretched to help you.

You are correct Baroness, my statement was needlessly broad.

Let me say it this way.

There is nothing Redreef could offer which would be an acceptable counterbalance to the distasteful statements made by a Lord within your house last night.

You don't know myself or my family well enough to make that kind of statement. How about you educate yourself before you tear someone else down.

Thanks.

Relationship Note on Katarina

This weekend I happened to be at the Ambassador Salon when the Salon philosophy group met. It was certainly worth giving up my usual game of Stones to entertain. Some of the questions were interesting, and the drunken philosophy game certainly made for an entertaining time.

Kudos to Princess Katarina for the evening. I may spend some more time with this lot in the future.

Relationship Note on Niklas

By the end my disagreement with the Lord in question had little to do with starving children and more to do with the place of nobility to use our station to raise others up. Losing my temper really didn't help that.

I also very much doubt Redreef has anything that would be enough for courtship of any type.

Relationship Note on Niklas

I'd like to note, dear brother, that I was arguing in favor of nuance, not necessarily theft. Justice as I've grown to understand it requires that we consider the need of the starving child as well as the baker. It's also important to remember the wording of the philosophical question was not "is it lawful to steal to feed a starving child" but rather "is it just?"

It is certainly not lawful, but whether or not it is just depends on a lot of issues not listed in the question.

Relationship Note on Coraline

Princess Coraline welcomed me to the Order of East Light recently. I have not taken vows as a Knight yet though. She told me to speak with those already in that position and my brothers and sisters in the Order. It is good advice. I appreciate the chance to serve alongside so many great people.

No one could possibly be disappointed with anything you create -- the costumes for the Gala will not be the exception. Your talent combined with your giving nature will make them outstanding.

So. The 'her' in my previous post did refer to my wife, not Mistress Josephine. Oops. I was clearly daydreaming a bit too much about my throne at the Gala to pay attention to my pronoun use.

That said, Mistress Josephine WILL be my go to to buy Sabella a tiara.

In other news, the Salon event last night was great. I mean, my question was pretty easy, but watching Lady Kenna, an iron guardsman, and my sister, the chief magistrate, argue in favor of stealing to feed a starving child while some Lord I've never met argued against was a lot of fun. The argument grew so impassioned Octavia ended up pulling rank and demanding he leave. As he was a Redreef this actually worked for once and he stepped away, though from what I saw he and Lady Kenna kept shouting at each other to the door.

So I guess keep an eye out for the courtship notice.

It is a lot more difficult to burn your estate down with water nearby. The bees though... Really I can't imagine how that might be affecting you research. You should bring Cheese over more frequently to discuss your experiments.

Relationship Note on Elloise

Sometimes I think I have discovered all of the unusual things about my wife there is to discover. But the bugs are a new thing and now she wishes to keep bees in the house. For an experiment surely. Maybe we can get some mead out of this or something.

I have also been teaching her how to swim and came home to find her sitting upside down holding her breath to practice for our underwater exercises. I do not think she believes me when I tell her that people underwater do not turn upside down and swim with their feet kicking the top of the water.

This week.

Someone thought themselves amusing and decided to leave a garish, grotesque bit of "art" outside the Commons Clinic. A towering pyramid of corpses, with protruding eyes and broken fingers, awful in its faithful rendition. I am fairly certain the Nox'alfar would have found it delightful, but neither I nor my patients appreciated it. I am positive, should the perpetrator somehow, unlikely as it is, read this, they are delighted by my offense. Congratulations, you are positively wonderful in your depiction of an anus. You should be proud.

We lost a patient to this disease that still lacks a name. It is high time we gave it one. It is becoming cumbersome talking about it so much without having something to call it. The Rage, perhaps? Thirst? It presents with a high fever, purple veining, a reversion to an animalistic state in which victims become filled with such rage they mindlessly attack those around them. Perhaps not entirely mindless, but they are given over to a feral cunning.

I believe Goodwoman Meriah Gascoigne has found the cure. There are still a few more days of brewing before we can test it. But I have faith. Should it work, the cure will be named Fairchild's Mercy, in honor of the girl who lost her life to this disease.

I am tired. I am so tired. But I am also thankful. For all the horror, for all of the fatigue, there have been cherished moments as well. Projects that have inspired me, kept me focused elsewhere during those moments of helplessness in the face of this sickness when I could do nothing for those that suffer but wait.

I am nearly done. I am utterly grateful to Lady Monique Greenmarch for her faith and trust in me. Letting me design costumes for her Gala when there are so many options to choose from. This project has been sanity-saving for me. Each time I have been unable to *do* something about my work, I can let my mind wander ideas for tunics, or gowns or accessories. It has given me an outlet, kept me sane during this time.

I only hope the finished products are as fantastic as I think they are. It will be embarrassing if they are not.

Some people believe that perfect is unattainable, but perfect happiness absolutely is attainable. It simply doesn't last. I sit with my freshly bathed and fed baby and I feel the perfect love of the gods. I look over at the beautiful man that I somehow have the luck to call mine and feel it as well. His frown of concentration as he works is as delicious as the sweet champagne that our house is named after.

I don't know what the future will hold and the past is beyond my grasp to impose my will upon, but I have now. I have this moment. I can worry for the future or grieve the past... or I can simply be happy. I can enjoy the blessings the gods have given me in the moment with the understanding that they are as temporary as they are precious. Just because I cannot keep this perfection doesn't mean that I cannot enjoy every moment the gods allow me to have.

It is enough.

Relationship Note on Coraline

Date: May 1009

Dearest Princess Coraline,

The party you had me meet you at was pretty difficult. So many people. I will need to watch you more in smaller settings, though, so I can handle such things as well as you do. Baron Edward was pleased I actually went to such a thing since I am usually dragged into public settings and away from my sewing, even if I stayed hidden with you and only spoken when directly spoken too.

With Regards,
Sheena

P.S. Since I it makes my adoptive grandparents happy when I do, I have written a second copy of this letter for the public records.

I will not write for you any platitudes about the nature of love. I will only remark that I will pray that your resolve on this matter is made of ice rather than marble; that it may be hard enough to protect you now, but might one day melt away with the warmth of a new sun.

This is probably the nicest blade I have ever held in my own hand, and I owe it all to you, dear. Thank you. Thank you for everything you do for me, and for being in my life. Know that every time I come home from the horrors to come? That you were responsible, for without your blades? I probably would not.

And as an aside, many thanks to Dame Alexis for the armor, for much the same reason as the swords.

I attended a fantastic party thrown by Lady Margret and Princess Elgana, two of my favorite people. What with all the drinking games, I'm a little surprised but also relieved that everyone made it home safe and sound. Even counting the slight headache I had the next morning, my greatest regret is my dearest Gwenna could not attend too. The best way to remedy this is most likely another party.
