Relationship Note on Calvert

I met this darling young scholar the other night while visiting the Traders Tavern. He flushed crimson from the moment I laid eyes on him, and it was only too easy to keep him flustered. However, he's not simply a scholar with a pretty face, he's Aldwin Aurum's own nephew. Our conversation was /most/ interesting, and I look forward to more.

Without wasting time on mundane details, I shall instead dive immediately into the meat of things: I challenged Princess Marian Valardin to a spar, which she graciously accepted. To my great pleasure, we were watched by no fewer than six other nobles - shall I name them? Of course I shall! Prince Dagon; Lord Victus; Duke Vercyn; Princess Valencia; Marquis Gustave; and mine own Duke Hadrian.

And if this wasn't enough, I even won, perhaps proving to the Sword of Sanctum that I am not the useless, but oh so pretty fop she suspected me of being.

Let me be frank - I want to boast. I want my ego to spill over and congratulate myself until I'm practically drunk on it. But I shall refrain. It was a close thing, and there is every reason to suspect that Marian's lack of a helmet had something to do with the outcome. Is this humble enough? It shall have to be.

Now, in other news, I have promised to sing the virtues of the sea in order to win sailors over to the Thraxian fleet. It was hard to say no to Victus after he had just quaffed nearly a bottle of my family's wine while promising to promote it to his drinking buddies. Yes, yes, they may prefer ale, but good is good.

What else? Oh, I owe Vercyn a wine date. He might be half a Shav but at least he's not a hideous troll.

So much for slowing down the drinking, I guess.

Relationship Note on Marian

When we first met, I could tell that the Sword of Sanctum saw little reason to think much of me. Now, normally, I couldn't care less what some other woman thought. But this was different. This was Marian Valardin. She's hardly much older than me, but in a way, it feels as if I grew up on tales of her. It may have taken knocking her around some on the sparring grounds, but I believe I've earned her respect. It was well worth it.

When a shav gets leprosy up in the North, the Abandoned just leave them to die alone and never speak of them again. Just saying.

-Tampering discovered by the Censor Liborum, reported to Aldwin, Arch Scholar of Vellichor. The evidence of the tampering has been sealed forever, with the guilty party being sentenced by Dominus Fawkuhl forever more as a Silent Reflection. Never again will the name of the guilty scholar be seen, as they have sinned against Vellichor, and are now blotted away forevermore. So it is written, so shall it be known.

Relationship Note on Alarissa

Princess Alarissa Valardin is Prince Barric Greyson's sister. While I've just met her, she is quite adorable and affable. I do not know much about her, yet, but given that I do spend time with Prince Barric, it would be wise to befriend his sister. Clearly she's married into the Valardin House but I do not know who her husband is or if he is still alive. There seems to be quite a lot of widowers in Arx. Regardless, the woman loves fashion as much as I do and I foresee this becoming a pleasant friendship.

Relationship Note on Gerry

I have not had much of a chance to get to know this man. However, I find him interesting. Perhaps it is the silver tongue he possesses. He also seems to have a little bit of mischief. I intend to figure this man out.

Relationship Note on Calista

I met this lovely nobelwoman at the temples. We spoke at length about my craft as a tailor. She seems to be someone I would enjoy working for. I could be a little more creative with my work as she is a Velenosa. I truly enjoy talking with her and feel as if I can speak with her on any topic.

Relationship Note on Gareth

When I first met Prince Gareth I'll admit I was rather taken aback. I am awfully fond of the pretty things in life and it's definitely the case that he's not one of them. But now I'm more curious than anything else, I find the life of an inquisitor morbidly facinating, and the story behind his injuries must be equally so.

Relationship Note on Alarissa

Princess Alarissa is a sweet girl, easy to befriend and pleasant company. It likely helps that she's also amazingly gorgeous, but she can also be a little stiff. Probably the Valardin in her, I just want to get her really drunk and teach her ribald sailor's songs.

Relationship Note on Fergus

It sounds wrong to say that I'm on drinking terms with the Prince. It's rather pompous and fairly rash, not to mention that I'm attempting not to unduly stain his reputation. But. I'm kind of on drinking terms with the Prince.
In some ways, it's hard to explain. It isn't over the top, it isn't filthy, it isn't even that it's casual -- but sometimes it feels like there's an unspoken accord where we both know our places in life and the paths they led us, so all that's left is either ale or whiskey, depending upon what currently lies beneath the surface for that chosen day, and chatting. It's a little like the difference in status provides enough distance where it's almost comfortable to talk. There's not many things which I can indulge in, but I find myself leaving our conversations with something new to think about and I can appreciate that.

Relationship Note on Jaenelle

Princess Jaenelle Velenosa-nee-Thrax, the granddaughter of Prince Donrai Thrax - a storied and powerful heritage, to say the least. It is no surprise then that she was wed to a Prince of the Great House Velenosa in a bid to secure ties between the age-old allies. Talen found himself interacting with her highness more so within Arx than he ever did back at the palace in Lenosia. After the loss of her late husband, Jaenelle's place within the family could have appeared tenuous. As a result, Talen made it his duty to involve her where possible. After all, he grew up knowing what it was like to be without family in a strange manor - it wouldn't do to leave her without support.

Relationship Note on Acacia

Acacia Culler, denizen of the Boroughs of Arx - a reminder that despite the challenges of his common blood, Talen could certainly have been dealt lower cards in life. Duke Niccolo Velenosa introduced the Sword to this streetwise connection in the early days of their arrival to the capital of the Compact. Why his grace took audience with the sailor in the first place was not clear to Talen, but as time wore on the incredulity of it made way for acceptance and then, finally, understanding. There was a mutual guardedness to each their natures but nothing that would prevent sound business from strengthening their acquaintance.

Relationship Note on Isolde

As the Grand Duchess of Lyceum's own beloved sister, Princess Isolde Velenosa was owed the same degree of enthusiasm to serve that any Lycene royal should have. The Mirrormask was a prominent proponent of the teachings about the Dark Reflection and while this did not phase most southerners and much less Talen, he was aware that the bulk of the Compact feared the Thirteenth. With an interest in ensuring no harm came to Tehom's priestess or the influence and reputation of the family, Talen often went out of his way to watch over Isolde.

Relationship Note on Niccolo

When Giovanni Artiglio died heroically thwarting an assassin, he left behind only one son to carry on his legacy - Talen. With no father but a wardship by the Great House of Velenosa, Duke Niccolo became the closest paternal figure to the boy. Patience, decorum, wit and strength were instilled within Talen as he was moulded into a worthwhile servant for the Lycene royalty. Talen's respect for Niccolo remained throughout his years and instilled within him the desire to make his grace proud. As Sword to the Grand Duchess of Lyceum, the Duke's daughter Esera, Talen aimed to excel.

Relationship Note on Esera

Talen's childhood was primarily spent as a ward of the Great House of Velenosa, where his loyalty to Esera flourished. After the gruesome death of Carlotta Velenosa in the events known historically as the King's Rest, Esera inherited her mother's responsibilities, most prominently among them the Grand Duchy of Lyceum. In recognition of his time spent as both servant and guard, Talen was in turn granted office as the Sword of Lenosia by his liege lady despite his common heritage. Swearing the oath to Esera meant more to Talen than just duty, it consumed his entire purpose in life and filled it with a drive to succeed in her name. Failure was not an option.

Only days after the sombre ascension of Esera Velenosa as the Grand Duchess of Lyceum and his appointment as the Sword of Lenosia, Talen travelled at the side of his liege lady to Arx. In the wake of the King's Rest there was much to be done. Carlotta Velenosa's brutal death was an act of war against Lycene royalty and it was here at the heart of the Compact where the pot stirred thickest with lies. In service of Esera, Talen would stand as a Sword to be brandished while her grace began uncovering the truth of the dark tragedy. With his common blood pumping in the young man's veins, however, the ancestral 'Mirror Blade' that Talen carried would only protect him so much from potential foes.

Today was mostly uneventful. When I say mostly I mean the part of the day I didn't spend at the Thrax Estate with Lord Victus. Not the most cordial or congenial host but he is the first Thraxian to invite for a visit. He gets credit for something! The purpose of my visit believe it or not was to give the man a trim. Naturally we discussed other things like the weather, his spar with Prince Edain, and the type of woman he prefers. Anyone reading this entry can rest assure I am not the type of woman Lord Victus fancies. Other than for my appearance, I believe he needs a stout and hardy lass. He really needs someone to give him a bit of his own brash medicine and possibly a lady from the North might suit him best. I am going to have to investigate further on this. I've somehow come to enjoy the idea of being a matchmaker. Perhaps it is a new hobby! The lines of succession must go on despite the tragedy that has befallen the city of Arx. Victus needs a lady who can tame him...and someone who can groom him, too!

I finished tallying our stocks of ingredients, and all the salves and ointments and potions and such prepared mixtures as there are, and also liquors and ales and wines, and some molds I found in the pantry.

I have also been doing my errands and looking around the city to see what I can see. I met folk, as well as princes and lordships and ladyships and I can't complain much about anyone.

I visited the Menagerie as I've been meaning to do. This is a bird I met there.

<what follows is a crude drawing of an exotic bird with abundant and showy plumage, with closer detail for the wings and beak>

I don't know what it's called. Maybe the next time I write in here I'll draw another of the beasts they have. Most of them I've never seen before. I saw a squirrel but I don't think it belonged.

I ask myself if they miss home. I can't complain, but I am here because I want to, and their Highnesses are good folk. Not that they're what some call folk, but they're good people, and they're closer to folk than others in this city. But I don't know if they'd like to read this, so I hope they don't, and I shall stop writing now.
