No small few of the soldiers I fought alongside were hardened by the Tor-Southport war, and were again tempered by engagements such as Giant's Fall and when Tolamar Brand first tested the Seawatch Gate. They exacted a dreadful toll. The enemy was speared and hammered. They were thrown from the ramparts or pulled under by their own. Soon, the ground around us was heaped with the dead, to the point were many were trampled for want of proper footing. I saw many stumble or find themselves thrust into our spears and swords.

Given my location, I was not among those who first glimpsed the behemoths. I have heard it said by others that they moved at a ghoulish pace to begin - leading some to wonder if we might face another obscenity like that at Giant's Fall. Their height was, obviously, the thing to be immediately discerned, as they towered over the rest of the enemy, who were at least once human.

As they lurched closer, our archers found their range. They pelted the dread creatures with arrows. Some claimed for a moment they dared hope...

But the formorian advanced as though unscathed, until they towered before us.

Lagos was the first to be struck down, as he had stood at our fore, banner held high to hearten the rest. A giant ploughed into our midst, swinging its warhammer. The shields that had so protected us against enemy arrows were cracked and splintered. The arms bearing them were shattered. Heads were pulped. Whole bodies cartwheeled into the ranks behind us. Men were crumpled like foil.

Tarasios, his gilded armor sheathed in blood and gore, rushed forward, ramming his spear into the gut of the monster, only to be beaten to the earth by its great hammer. But we famed soldiers did not falter. We threw ourselves at the giant, and a battle was fought unlike any since the days of the Reckoning. Fearless, skilled, armed with the finest Southportian steel, we stemmed its lumbering rush.

But for heartbeats only.

Many and more perished. They were thrown shattered, little more than broken bones and ground meat wrapped in the skin of men.

All came rushing to the gate. But the giants swatted them dead. Men and women vanished beneath their hammer strokes. It was like witnessing the slaughter of children.

That's all I care to write for now.

The more I think, the more I wonder if the times you live in are what define you or if you allow yourself to be defined by them.

If you were made for this, or if you happen to be the right person at that exact time.

I don't know. There is a sense of being needed for what you do, even if what you do isn't very nice. Does that make what you are any better, fully aware of what you're needed for? Even if the cause is just? Does that make it alright?

I wanted to hang the sword up, never have to look at it again. Try as I might, I don't know it's possible to just ignore it. Or forget.

At times, it just feels like it's coming around again. What's old is new again. Past dictates the future.

Could be there's no real choice, that there never was. Think that keeps me awake more nights than most.

She understands me in a way that leaves me to wonder if she has tread a similar path on the way to actualization: the achievement of one's full potential through independence, empathy, and a grasp of the world.

I am thinking about handing off my case to Silas. People know and respect the Lord Commander, and if anyone can figure out what is happening, it is him. I'm quite frankly making no progress. And this week has been full of people asking so much. I am just trying to do my job with honor. I got more responsibility and a promotion. One that means more work. I think I'm going to take some time for myself. Disappearances, weird cases, none of this is really the Iron Guard's duty to investigate, but it seems I find myself doing most of the investigative work. Don't mistake it for complaining, but I could do with the proper people handling their side of each thing.

The Iron Guard is not trying to keep people from celebrating or mourning. The Merchant incident was because he was accused of selling stolen and possibly grave robbed goods. All that said, it was taken in so that an on-going investigation could be carried out, which will be handed off properly to the Courts after finding any information about it. I felt I should write it here for any that were wondering about the situation, and there were multiple people who examined the wares on site in addition.

Well, I got pickpocketed by a friend today. Hadn't seen her in a while. Not like it was anything expensive though... Just a good luck charm. I shouldn't worry about it, I don't think anything bad could come of losing it.

Today I found a relic that appears to be made by elves!

Should I donate this to the scholars? Or the Faith? I don't even know what to do with it!

Languishing has a certain appeal.

There is too much time for introspection, and the transition from hermitage to the rich complexities of life outside of the villa has proved exacting. I feel as minute as any insect beneath a magnifying lens, under the unforgiving scrutiny of the Lyceum, and the fear of being compared ceaselessly to the impossible standards my cousins present. At first, it was a great condescension to leave my suite. I persisted. I walked through the streets. I made purchases. Living as I had for months with my own dread of further saying or doing the wrong thing, I was surprised to find that those whispers - those unwanted thoughts - were silenced.

At least for a time.

The Princess is a remarkable woman who has a very calm and warm demeanor. The time I spent with her was enjoyable and educational. She sent me the gift of a book and I have come to learn that is one of the best gifts that one can be given. I look forward to seeing what I learn from her next.

Returning to the Telmarch is always something of a bittersweet experience. Looking out over the mountains and valleys always manages to bring a smile to me, for there is nothing quite like the sights, as inhospitable as they are, that you can find there. So to does it bring reminders of family, both those still with us and those lost. And it brings memories of childhood, which are seldom the most pleasant of things. To watch the knights practice serves as a stark reminder of how different I am from them, yet we all share one thing in common: or undying love and loyalty for these lands and our fealty to Valardin.

Bittersweet, I think, is an appropriate term. It equally fit the conversation I had with my travelling companion.

I'm honored to be accepted as the Officiator of the Menagerie.

It's a position that means so much to me. It puts my passions to use. I had since considered the fall out I witnessed from the siege and knew I must play a more active role in contributing to animal health and wellness in the city. I witnessed more than a few animal companions left without handlers and home, as well as those animals saved from the Gray Forest. I felt, the menagerie needed to be more than a public space to witness exotic animals, but a place, where all with interests in animals can freely collaborate.

Since I arrived in Arx, my ambitions were to see the menagerie transformed into a more grand place then it currently is and while the current conditions aren't entirely lacking, they need a little help, specifically when it was noted how many wild animals were brought in and quartered there. Now, I'm overseeing the park! I received official word this morning, how my heart moves with excitement!

While I had hoped to establish a group for this endeavor, sometimes it is better to spirit such initiatives in more sure footed ways. I will hope other people will support this grand task and attend the fundraiser being held for it, so that we can all enjoy it later!

I'll be excited to work with anyone who has ideas for the architecture and designs to revitalize the area. I hope to include an amphitheater to the grounds, to act as a place where people can collaborate and train their animal handling and animal companions freely, as well as it being a place for animal experts to host clinics and demonstrations. I have other plans too, but, you'll have to come to the fundraiser to hear it!

Also, if anyone wants to collaborate on the future of the menagerie, I would be happy to hear from you!

Most beloved readers,

I've retired from being a Whisper and a Courtesan in general. I spend a lot of time not knowing what to do with myself. Far too much time is spent idle for me.

However, Mirari and I have made grand plans for our family. We've even got a beautiful house. It gives me something to do with myself.

Not sure when or why things became so complicated, though these days they seem to be getting more so with each passing minute. When ones skills are solely in martial combat and strategy and tactics how do you put yourself to use in other ways? How do you feel of use in any other way than defense of your house and kin? I know these things are important I just wish I had other skills.
