The Bijoux, our palace's dungeons, were not invaded or compromised by a creature of shadow. For those who might have heard recent rumours and been concerned as to the security of the Crown, please be reassured. His Majesty was in no danger.

The Black Widow's reputation precedes her but the chance of danger seems worth it.

My uncle continues to surprise me with the levels of depth he has. I am glad we are under one roof once more. If nothing else I enjoy seeing the aftermath of his victims.

Supposedly foxes can be trained to eat snakes. Poor Hiss. Let's hope he is faster.

Oh, my friend. This city is not going to be an enjoyable experience for you. I am glad that you chose a time when I am living here.

I had no idea that infants could reach such distance when spitting up.

Also, a full nights sleep. I have taken advantage of that for so long and never thought about what it would be like losing it. I am now so very sorry for taking that for granted.

I feel like I can handle demons much better than a screaming infant. And oh my, Safiyyah has some lungs on her.

We'll see what Hellespont finds.

If there's any luck, it'll be another devastated settlement. We'll trace the attacks back to their source.

Life is never dull, I'll give it that.

Too many problems coming up from having lost so many records to history, but nothing to be done for that. All anyone can do now is keep going, and hope we can reconstruct it all.

Once more the Scout of the Snows ventures North; I think I'll stay and send the response back home. That is the far more appealing of my options.

I do not like what we've left behind. It has stood for a few seasons already, and I do not fear that it will be disturbed. I fear that it serves some purpose we do not understand and that leaving it unstudied and functioning--if it does, indeed, serve any function--may not be to our advantage.

I understand the reasons. A report must be provided first. We must prepare before we poke at such a thing. But sensibility and pragmatism offer little comfort in this instance.

I hope we're able to head up there again, undo all that awful work and find, in the end, that it meant nothing. Until such a time that its meaninglessness is verified, its benefit laid plain or its awfulness undone, it will itch at the back of my consciousness. It will burden my conscience.

Relationship Note on Aislin

Lady Pathfinder and Curator Aislin Ashford of the Order of Hope (*) is a true friend, as demonstrated by the fact that she sends Setarcan rum with her weightier messages.

(*) For an up to date list of her titles it may be best to consult the most recent journals as she will likely have added more in a couple of weeks.

Relationship Note on Calypso

Lady General Calypso impressed me even before Lady Dawn was made Regent with her dedication to military matters. After Lady Dawn's appointment, the formation of her council, and my appointment as Minister of Defense, I've found her one of the most reliable in terms of her proactiveness and communication. If there is something that needs to be done, she does it. That's a rare virtue.

I've been quite busy at the forge lately; several weapons that needed creating, several more on their heels. It is by no means a complaint! There is a serenity, a perfect quiet of working metal. Yes, even with the hammering and sounds of a blazing fire. I am so used to those sounds that they fall to the background. The true gift of being so busy is the time to think. Really and truly /think/. I used to muse on better ways to fold metal, or different angles by which I could put my fist to someone's jaw.

Lately, thoughts tend toward heavier topics, in a way. I can not shake this feeling that I am missing something. That there's something /there/, in the back of my mind or out of the corner of my eye, that I just can't put my finger on. I never considered myself one for such thinking, but there it is all the same. Sometimes I wish I had more of a mind for this sort of thing. I've always just done well enough with my hands before is all.

Relationship Note on Leola

Never underestimate the meek and mild. They see with different eyes than the bold. And what they see holds great value and true insight.

I have come to value Leola greatly in the time I have gotten to know her. Not only is she talented at her craft, training any animal with expertise and a compassionate reliable hand. But she is delightful to be around. I intend to gather her thoughts more frequently. I am very proud of the initiative she has taken with the hunting lodge as well. It took great effort to see that project landing on its feet and I intend to do everything I can to support her.

Relationship Note on Calypso

The Lady General has procured armor for me. It fits well, and while I'm not used to walking the streets in leather pants, the armor draws a lot of admiring glances. It's expensive, and well tailored, and I might spend a little on tightening or replacing this or that, but overall, I adore it.

Now to learn to use a spear with it.

Something I consider.

I think the reason so much has been lost is, even now, I know we don't always reveal what we know. We hide it, we whisper it to one another, we keep it secret - to protect ourselves, to protect each other. I've been told things I had to mutter to the Baron, before his death, and I felt filthy for saying them, but he needed to know them, and so I did.

Why do we assume others did otherwise, so long ago? And in the future, will others look back at our pieces, and wonder why we did not write what we know?
