Relationship Note on Miranda

Winter is holding on for just how long it's supposed to! It's the best season you know. I suppose other than fall, but this is definitely the best.

I am still surprise that there are still a lot of people that I have never met before in the city. I always thought I was so social!

Winter turns towards spring in the endless dance of the seasons. The snow is thinner, almost gone in some places; the ice in the harbour is clearing. Soon Arx and Arvum will waken from their sleep, and life will bring energy and colour to the city once more. Trade will return in full measure, as it does every spring, and the docks will be busier than they've been since the whirlpool first sprang - or sucked - into life.

And what of the wars? They've not gone away. Spring brings campaigning season, after all, and I've a list of things to do in Arx that's longer than my arm even in Tanith's writing. It's been a pleasant interlude, a time to catch our breaths, and yet the end of winter and the return of weather I can move around the city in will mean fewer people I want to go and see.

That's the way of life, I suppose. Still, I look forward to the chance to walk about outdoors without freezing my fingers off.

Politicking has never particularly been my forte, scholar, but as of late I have been forced to take notice of some things and involve myself in others. I am hopeful that all peoples of the Mourning Isles can realize the benefit of acting in concert and directed by a singular purpose. The Traitor Duke and his allies from the east must be seen as an opportunity for us to solidify the might of the Thraxian navy and reaffirm our position in the Compact.

It will be nice to see this winter come to its end. Business at the shop has been awful for worryingly long. The whirlpool may be gone, but its effects are not. And jewelry is not a necessity, I admit.

The family shop aside, one thing that happens each winter happened again - I've had time to play. With wire and stones, of course. I finally finished something that has been sitting on the workbench as a sketch for too, too long. It feels good to make something so intricate. I've been working with glass beads for such a long time that I'd nearly forgotten how it felt to work in stones.

Did I forget hosting duties during the family dinner when you came along?

Thea has been grumbling all day.

Another good week with one of my students. Truly, several years ago, the idea of having even one would have had me laugh. Now there are responsibilities and being mature.

Still time, though, to adjust to our delightfully Lycene drinking habits.

Relationship Note on Ida

Dame Ida. She is a wonder. And a bit of a sadist, I think. How will I ever bear to part with these glorious blades and hairpins? I would accuse her of making them incredible just to torment me, but I know from experience that everything she makes is spectacular so I cannot. Still, they will make an exciting addition to the event. If I don't cancel it so I can keep them...

How fortunate I am to have the family that I do. For all of our troubles and superstitions, there is a greatness to Blackshore that is apparent within our walls. I can only pray to serve my siblings and cousins in the manner they deserve.

Relationship Note on Iseulet

When I met Iseulet, I was pleasantly surprised by her ambition, even more than her beauty. She had drive and passion and she puts both into everything that she does. She applied that same drive to wooing me and securing my family's permission to marry me and make me her Marquis.

There is more than a flickering flame of affection for her -- I should find something that is unique and special to give to her as a gift. I guess that starts with finding out the best things that she enjoys. It is a path ahead for me to follow, and may it run long and through a great many lands. A song to be started, a symphony to be composed.

I traded a barrel of honeymead from one of the other taverns, for a barrel of spiced wine that now sits in the Murder.

Nothing fancy either way, though I had a little hand in making what I traded. Serving alcohol that can be done so warmed is always smart when the nights are cold, well into spring from early autumn. Some folk say it makes them feel spoiled, others 'too soft'.

Money is money, but a hot whiskey apple cider and a good dollop of honey on a cold evening can make everything better, even on the shit days.

Sometimes I wonder if I should take more commission, but then I remember I hate doing what people tell me to do and prefer to create based on my own notions.

The twin's top 10 list for not going to Saikland this spring, part 2:
05. There's no room for all our plushie collection sailing there. They might get wet. Getting wet is very bad for plushies.
04. We'd miss _your_ birthday! (yes, they mentioned birthdays...again.)
03. We don't _want_ to leave!

At this point, after we calmed them down, we avoided speaking of their leaving in the hopes time would help in the matter. And it did for a few days till they overheard Lady Zoey and I discussing if she would leave her children in Arx or send them to stay with family once the weather warmed.

02. Quivering lower lips, big sad eyes, sniffling, too quiet, reproachful looks that speak volumns without a word being uttered. Thankfully, they are just five and could not maintain that for very long before they were back playing and staying busy with the usual children's activities. But when they think of it, this is a reason they revisit.
01. You _need_us to snuggle you when you have bad dreams.

That is something with which I can not argue, something for which I had no reply. There might be offers by others but either they are away, occupied with someone else, or by the time I stir around enough to consider sending a message, I put on my 'big girl' skirt, suck it up and manage alone. It isn't something for which you can plan, and it isn't something that happens all that often now, and you don't earn friends by sending a messenger to wake them in the middle of the night because you want a hug.

I attended the winter festival at the Laurents' a few nights ago - my first time ice skating, not that you'd perhaps be able to tell from my actually managing to not fall. I wish that more had been so daring as to try the skating, since it was a lot of fun, but others were clearly more happy to be trying their hand at the sledding.

Still, I'll be grateful when spring arrives. This city's too cold for my taste.

I'm still looking for an armorsmith that can make a set of simple brigandine for me. The last set is beyond repair. The same is true for a weaponsmith willing to try out a new design for a staff. If either happens upon my journals and finds themselves in want of my coin, they just need to send a messenger to the House of Questions for an appointment.

As another conflict looms I urge the nobility of the Compact to not forget those families who have lost people to prior wars, whose wounds may not be as fresh as those we might see in the coming tomorrows, but who still feel the keen loss of their loved ones who died in defense of us. I will once again be mounting a large scale effort for the Crownlands to help these people who may have lost income of profession from being wounded or those children who have lost a parent or been orphaned that will need help to learn a profession, find a trade, or a place as a squire. While I still have some hope that the coming issues with Eurus might still be solved or at least lessened with diplomatic actions, Grayson intends to be ready to support those families who will inevitably pay a great price to ensure our Compact stands whole.

Time flies when you're having fun, I've heard it said. I think it flies regardless, but we don't notice it as much when we're having fun.

In other words, how is it already now? Where did the time get to?

I shall have to run to make it to my next promised appointment.

Is spring coming?

I normally adore winter and all it brings, but I'd really like to take the twins out to play and the snow is just too cold for them.

But it seems like winter is holding on forever!

Or is it just me?
