It's startling how much more productive some efforts one undertakes can be than are others of a similar type. Of late, two attempts that Tenebrae and I made to acquire the kinds of resources required for our fortification efforts turned out to be remarkably successful; one quite astonishingly so, in fact. I feel more than a little proud of our success, in spite of my awareness that its scale was in great part a matter of simple (if dramatic) good fortune. It certainly does make a change from our struggles in years past.

I shared an evening with my family this week, and I am still collecting my thoughts on the experience. All the silver and titles in the world are worthless without family. I hope that my efforts to be the duchess they deserve do not blindside me from scheduling these dinners more often! What a perfect evening, and company.

While my time at the House of Silken words certainly taught me to mingle with members of high society, it did not fully prepare me for life in a noble's manor. To this end, Duchess Belladonna has seen to it that my mannerisms are refined. Over the past week, I have become familiar with the eloquent nuances of speech in this part of Arvum; the proper ways to wear one's hair in the presence of foreign lords; extending one's little finger whilst drinking, and much more.
It has all been a fair amount to learn, and has left me feeling more confident and excited for House Pravus' next dinner party.

Rumors of wars urge the inhabitants of Setarco to rally once again, and rally they did. As always, my people have gone above and beyond the call of duty to protect their beautiful motherland, and even as new enemies threaten our shores, I have no doubt the result will be the same as it has always been: blood-caked sands, celebrations and victory.
That is the privilege of having a long legacy of fighting against tyrants and foreign would-be conquerors. Setarcans are not all blood and wine, we are defiance as much as deviance, and we will stake our enemies, burn their ships, curse their gods and live to add them to the long list of unnatural fools who thought they could have our Setarco.
If I am wrong, may it be known Duchess Belladonna Pravus brought ruin to her home and people. If I am right, however, I fully expect congratulations from my peers in the form of unpoisoned chocolate truffles.

Miranda was hurt! It's hard not to fear the worst when news like that comes to you. There was nothing to be done at the time but to worry. I did sleep eventually. Of course when I was going to visit the Hospice I'm not surprised that it could not hold her when awake.

A pleasant chat on the beach turned decidedly unpleasant. I am grateful that there were true heroes there to fight the beast and attend the wounded. I've never seen a shark anywhere but in books before, but I am quite convinced that they were never meant to be so large and angry.

I've returned to Arx, and had the questionable luck of being present at the beach when the shark attack occurred. While it was a tragedy, with a number of deaths and wounded, it would have been far worse had it not been for the heroism I saw displayed by those present, both in taking on the shark and making sure the people reached the shore to safety and were seen to.
