Accepting a challenge is not the time to go on an extensive defense of your position. It's a bad look. The point is to leave it to the duel.

Relationship Note on Gaspar

Beyond my wildest expectations, the Velenosan Prince has become a dependable friend to me. He has even taken a keen interest in my day-to-day affairs, at least those he might be inclined to effect in some way, whether inadvertently or otherwise. I find that in spite of my natural desire to maintain privacy where personal matters are concerned, I have become more open to accepting advice and support from him. I am cautiously optimistic that this is a two-way road, in that by my own limited means, I will one day be as helpful to him in his life as he has already been in mine.

Wit - especially that which cuts in defense of true science, like Princess Marian's blade through the Undrowned Sons - should never be suppressed with violence. For what but wit offers so great a check to absurd behavior and so much amusement to people of all stations?

I've been volunteering at one of the shops, trying to make good on a favor I've asked of the owner. It has really opened my eyes to how little I understood her trade before. I don't believe this is going to inspire me to turn over another leaf in my life, to walk the road of doing what she does. It does give me an appreciation for things I never knew I was failing to appreciate, though.

If, as the Nobility, you only ever buy discounted, haggled goods from the city's market. Are you:

* Living beyond your means
* Depriving the hard working creators, farmers and common folk of their income
* Using the gifts you have
* Something else.

You provided a fascinating view on charity and, when we next can, I look forward to working the idea into something that benefits the Lowers for months or years.

Relationship Note on Artur

It is true, what my brother wrote. When we were children and he would head out or sneak out, to go on some adventure, there were no few times that I would follow. I always thought he didn't know, of course, and I stepped into the prints he left in the snow as much so he didn't know as anyone else. I suspect few big brothers like their little sisters tagging along. It wasn't easy - for several years I had to leap to get from one to the next. I would have to leave his prints and find a hiding place with some great tree, at some point, or I'd never get close enough to hear him fight the great beasts of his dreams, or see him wield his wooden sword. I loved to listen to the tales he told as he fought the monsters, but always had to hop back into his bootprints - on tippytoes - and get back to the castle before he noticed I was there. I guess he always knew I was there anyhow, and I hope to always be there for him now that we are grown.

It was enjoyable to take part in the archery competition part of the Grayson festival - if a reminder that I perhaps need to spend more time exercising and in the trees, and less pouring over the reports of a duchy. It was also a great pleasure to see my Ashford cousins, and Lady Amari - my former intended and archery protogé, who it seems may well exceed my mastery. And is certainly more rounded.

Most interesting though was the inclusion of a Kennex, Lady Zoey. After my rather disastrous attempts to get rangers and woodcraft skills, and the bow, taken up in the Isles - could this mean there might be reason to try again?

But still. I cannot deny I was pleased to take the win, and prove to my cousins that time back in my sea faring home has not dulled my skills from the Ashford Rangers.

In general? I would not look to judge the offer of a million silver for this staff of the Blessed Brigida. It is an awesome sum, that is true, but one built up through plying Jayus' crafts and in honourable deals. And with, of course, the tithes being taken at appropriate points to fund good work.

The Godsworn were once inviolate - all knew this, from the nobles to the most ordinary person in the lowers. The Godsworn go and do the things society needs us to do - as well as talk about the Gods, we do their work. The orphans, the alms for the poor, healing for the sick. The Godsworn went where others could or would not. And that truce has rarely been broken. And in the past its breaking has brought down dynasties. The unfortunate and incorrect lesson some took from the Great Road and some of the incidences on it were that the Godsworn perhaps are somehow fair game. Let me say they are not. And those who do seek to purloin and harm and disrupt the Godsworn, know that the only people you could ever hurt are the orphans, the sick and the poor. I assure you the worth of a single staff is like a grain of sand compared to the entire shores of silver the Faith puts into helping those in need.

This time it is a staff stolen, next time perhaps a sword, or perhaps a mercy is mugged, or perhaps a Solace stabbed. None of these will dissuade us from helping those that we can, but it may impact upon it.

I realise this sounds like a lot to make from the theft of a single staff, but society like many things is a dream. One we hold together and in our collective belief strengthen. Those strands that bind it and make it strong, like the inviolate nature of the Godsworn, are easy to break one by one however and far more difficult to weave back together.

Countess Rifella Strongmast will celebrate her birthday in the coming fall. She has served our house well in her decades and I will see that she has a grand party as a show of our thanks.

It's been slow findinging entertainers in Arx who wish for the coin. I will have to expand further afield and may just hire from Astarrea itself and pay for their voyage here.

I have a new dress!

It is a gorgeous, glistering affair in ocean blue and silvery steel -- the colours of House Pravus. The seamstress outdid herself, certainly. Its embroidery is exceptional. Duchess Belladonna was delighted to see her protege clad in clothing becoming of a Suspire, rather than the common apparel I had brought with me. She even saw fit to give my dress a name: Rosethorn. I quite like that.

The Grayson Grand Festival was a lot of fun. I didn't get to see all the events, as I was helping Lady Rhiannon with the Archery tournament. I was pleased to be able to give out the prizes in the end, and then I did get to go dancing with Harlan, and that is always a good thing.

I do love to dance, and he does it far better than he likes to let on. The dancing was definitely a lot of fun.

Relationship Note on Tikva

Yes, I feel like that's worth making clear as well - I have absolutely no hostile feelings towards Princess Tikva for calling for this duel, and if she feels my words were improper and that I crossed a line, by all rights, she should be calling me out for it. I've written what I have written, and I will let the Champions sort it out at this point.

I've had numerous people contact me asking for my opinion on the divorce of my sister. So to aide those curious minds out there.

I do not have an opinion on their marriage or their divorce. It is theirs and houses Leary and Stormbreak's business. Not mine or my houses.

My own personal opinion is that as members of the peerage we don't marry for ourselves. we marry for the people we are entrusted to look after. My husband chose to join the compact and bring a better life for his people. I chose the marriage because I know I have the ability to help the people adapt and grow into the compact. Whether I love my husband with the deepest depths of my heart or not is irrelevant. To me, the importance lays in what I can do to help my people flourish and thrive.

I can only hope the same thoughts went into the divorce. Is this the best choice for the people of White Frost? Will this strengthen both families and bring prosperity to those affected?

A million silver I well know the economic impact of. A million silver is no small amount. A million silver is what one can ask the crown for if they possess the boon won in the tournament of roses. A million silver is what the winner of the peoples tournament will walk away with and fortunes change. More than what most lower nobles will ever see in their life as well.

And a million silver will bring back to my dearest friend, her staff. I live with the Blessed. There's days where we cannot abide the nattering of youth in the streets. Evenings where we sit in front of the fire and just listen to Oswald snuffling and Jam and Butter cooing. With age, we find solidarity and escape. You'll find no nattering gems in my house except on my finger and even they know to hush.

It's silver, my own silver, and it'll take me some time to recover financially, but I'll be fine and shall endure. Because when you manage to reach our ages, there are things that have managed to travel the roads with us. That have within them, imbued certain intangible value. They have been with us through thick and thin. The silver on the inside of my wedding band has been polished to a gleam that the outside shall never match. There are places on her staff, where the Blessed's hand has worn a groove and has a shine that no lacquer can reproduce. Scuffs and marks, streaks.

To offer a million silver is deliberate. It is a sum so great that it will spur a search. A sum so great that if it was done with malicious intent, that greed might weigh more than whatever might have spurred someone to steal it. It has been months. Months. A smaller bounty brought forth no leads, and I am done seeing my friend hurting and bereft of something that helps her to cope with the other losses that she has seen. I am done seeing my friend bereft of a companion that has been with her for so long. A limb cut and wrenched from the body.

I will bleed silver, for my dear friend. I would bleed silver for a great many because they are worth it in my eyes, all the silver in the world. Who or what, would you bleed silver for Goodwoman Shazza Sedna? Who would you -bleed- for, if anyone? Who would bleed for you? Because I know that if the roles were reversed, the Blessed would wade through war for me. For near anyone in this compact.

So get out there. Find the staff. There's ankles that badly need rapping.

So I offer a million silver.
