If a Champion doesn't believe a person innocent of a crime, then, morally, they shouldn't stand on their behalf in trial by combat. These are not duels of entertainment.

Some nights I dream the flowers are spirits
of all the beautiful intangible things I cannot hold:
the bluebells ring the laughter of childhood,
red dahlias spring from kisses of a secret love,
white lilies are innocence long lost,
chrysanthemum, the golden hopes of youth,
dandelions, a long forgotten wish.

Never lose your cool and lash out in blind rage. It only makes you look like a bull in a pottery shop, leaving a mess for people having to clean up after you're done. Even after the mess is cleaned, your bullshit will still leave a stench in the shop and nobody likes bullshit.
Commoner, if you have a grievance with a noble? Do the following: Use the chain of authority by seeking redress from the lowest noble in the chain of authority of the fealty you're a part of, or the impartial Magistrate's Court against that noble in a civil claim if you personally have the resources. If you threaten the nobility with violence, it'll cause more problems not just for you but for many others as the nobility, rightly so, will not tolerate insults or threats against their institution. You aren't just fighting one person, a noble represents potentially tens to thousands of commoners just like you who toil, work hard and live a life of general happiness due to the noble being there. When you threaten the noble, you're threatening all of them.
Noble, if you have a grievance with a commoner? Do the following: Speak with the lowest noble on the run of their fealty's chain of authority and seek redress, or use the impartial Magistrate's Court. Punching down makes you look inept, weak and not able to handle your shit which makes me start to think that the blood might be diluted. The commoner exists and toils not so the nobility can live lives of luxury, but so by giving up some freedoms they are able to live a life of safety and pursue happiness. By threatening a commoner's life, you threaten their noble house and the tens to thousands of commoners that house represents. You create a potential snowball to start rolling down.
I sincerely believe that a noble and commoner dueling or seeking trial by combat for a slight grievance is an insult to the institution of Gloria. Never use her for stupid things, you water down the meaning of seeking absolute pure truth. A court should never allow such an escalation except under the most grievous of circumstances, invoking Gloria to stand with the Sentinel to see that the righteousness are shown and injustice prevented is a holy and sacred thing.
As for the Champion's Guild denying a commoner a champion, I think that's fair. It's an organization built to cater the nobility so they can air their grievances, even if very petty or stupid sounding such as things about tea, so that blood isn't truly shed and civility is maintained. Perhaps there's an opportunity for a guild to be formed of champions that fight for the common person, understanding that money would be low, but being showered in the respect earned each time they win and show the cause of the righteous could be a greater reward.
Still, praise doesn't feed an empty stomach. Maybe the Crown could set up a fund to establish this guild.

From there, the conversation went downhill if you call it a conversation. Fractures. I assured her that none of my gems fracture. Not in the least. I make very sure when cutting them to ensure that no flaw that would lead to such remains.
I don't know. I have offended her. Gems are verboten? But she came in a shop that they abide and are bountiful. Oh I'm so confused. Emeralds too?
Fair certain that I'm now on some list of those to whom not to sell Seliki pearls to after that.

Relationship Note on Olivia
See, the Lady Olivia recently asked me as well as several others to help her with the distribution and promotion of gourd seeds from a particular plant. The plant was one that the Lady Olivia has worked on the be resistant to some blights that affects others. That was not as thirsty as some and, since she was the expert on such - it seemed right to help.
So the favour had to come in the form of promoting this crop for me. This is where it becomes strange, to travel to Southport, to Ashford and to other parts of Arvum where gourds are regularly seen - and explain this to the good Thralls, Prodigals and common people. Fortunately the crop was adaptable and the pitch was easy at some parts. To boil it down:
Gourd is good, gourd is great. Gourd will feed you, when there you are in a state.
It is an emergency crop ultimately and, in the quest to stave of famines, it will be invaluable for years to come.

The trial by combat was and remains the sole province of the Lady Gloria, in which truth may be unveiled in the light of honourable battle.

Relationship Note on Stygia
When Ras was arrested, he immediately wrote me to ask me to fight for him for trial by combat. Before I answered I wanted to find out what was going on. It was difficult to get much information out of Ras at the moment so I wrote to friends in the Iron Guard. I was told that while Ras was locked up, that he was let out and everything should just move on at that point. No trial by combat, no nothing.
When I saw Ras, I gave him a lecture. I've known Ras since he couldn't even walk on his own. I told him that the Iron Guard told me it was dropped. Moving on. Believing that there would be no trial by combat I laid into Ras for losing his temper. I told him that asking a man to bleed for him in a trial by combat was serious. Ras is well aware of my martial prowess, and no one should feel as if they can act however they wish because they know they have a giant with a hammer in their corner. I told him I would take another scar for him, another twenty. But that he should keep in mind that throwing a fist because he's angry may mean another bears a scar for the rest of their lives. He shouldn't be reckless.
Champions can be very reckless. We choose to bleed for a great many causes, some serious, some very much not so. That is the job and one that I am obviously alright with. But I wanted Ras to learn from this, that perhaps it would cause him to reflect when he feels that rage the next time. His actions have consequences.
Apparently after this, Lord Alban insisted upon Ras being punished and so the trial by combat was scheduled. Wherein Ras elected to fight for himself. I demanded he let me fight for him, but he felt after the lecture I gave him, that he needed to fend for himself. It was never the lesson I was trying to teach him, but it's the one he took. I will admit that I tried to push on Lord Alessandro that I would fight for Ras even though I knew Ras at that point did not want me to. I feel badly for that, but I did not want Ras to fight, desperately. Lord Alessandro told me Ras did not want me to fight for him and that would be that and unfortunately nothing could be done unless I convinced Ras otherwise.
I would more than gladly bleed for little Ras. Ten times over. I was glad when Lady Brianna extended her help to him and was able to convince him through what I understand was a complicated negotiation that she would fight for him. However I would more importantly see that my young friend never lose his temper and get himself in a situation like this again.
All of it is a rather unfortunate situation and I do hope we are all able to move on promptly.

I said... it would be easy for him to fight. He was just setting me straight. And he was right. I shouldn't take advantage of my friends, specially over something like soup and biscuits. Anyway, after he found out the trial by combat was actually gonna happen, he told me he was gonna beat the shit out of me so that I couldn't walk so that he'd go be my Champion, but I hid somewhere until he got over that idea.
He thinks I messed up cuz I get stupid mad over crap like this. But I don't think so. He doesn't get that part because he's always been a winner, right? I told you that. But I'm glad I didn't tell you his name because he doesn't deserve to be talked about like this. He's the freakin best of us.

I shall be working with my own lawyer to file a civil suit against the Undrowned Sons for damages in their most recent attack against House Blackshore during the Harvest Festival. I hope others join me in my efforts to petition the courts to take action against the Undrowned Sons.
