Coin's only as good as the freedom it brings. It's worth less than nothing if it's got chains attached.

Everyone's got some kind of chains, sure, but I'm gonna choose mine carefully.

That the Compact holds one Abandoned people the same as the next, oftener than not, ain't escaped the knowing of raiders, neither.

That a clever bastard could ride home with spoils while the Compact took their vengeance on whatever tribe was closest. Take all they could carry and let their enemies suffer for it.

A monumentous amount of paperwork.

I sometimes wonder how in the gods names she managed it. Because there is quite a bit of it. Thank siad gods for Lora who brought Wendy and WEndy provided entertainment while we sorted through the names and the like.

Then a visit from Fortunato gave much needed respite from the paperwork. I do hope that the foul mouth things will be of use to him. Perhaps that theory is right and it's less that they are unhappy but that they just don't want to work with me? Time will tell. But if the bracelets spew explenatives even after they have been made or there is a very angry piece of metal, well. We'll know.

I am still reminded of that singular angry riotous ruby that I turned into an earring.

You knew, you very well knew what would happen Joscelin. Now I have a bench in my shop with nothing but paperwork.

I'll make it a habit to come visit more often. Perhaps, not during drinking contests. But still not a bad time.

There is something immensely satisfying in encouraging newlyweds to make doe-eyes at one another.

I suspect this relegates me to the role of 'meddling aunt', even to those who bear no relation to me or to my House whatsoever.

I've been thinking a lot lately, about a lot of things. Jayus inspires us all, throughout our lives. I think I'd like to do a fundraiser for the Faith, in his name.

I should probably get crafting a few pieces, before even thinking about asking for donations.

Iriscal expands again. The reports which arrive at my desk speak of a county swollen with good fortune, the coffers full and morale high. We have carved more land from the wilderness, and seeded it with safe, comfortable villages for my artisans, and increased the number of cloth mills. The docks on the river have been refurbished. This year's trade receipts will show we have established a new measure for prosperity.

We are known and we are respected. The work of generations is bearing fruit. Finally, finally.

Do you see, Mother? It was not so difficult, after all.

The mothers among my servants have told me many times of the warm and contented glow of motherhood, the way their minds turned to simple domestic pleasures. How they basked in the joys of knowing they nurtured a life within. I find each passing week leaves me feeling more fierce. I bristle, where I didn't before. I have less patience for fools, and less tolerance for the inconsequential. I would feather my nest in steel. I will make this child's birthing gift a renewed cavalry, the mounted knights of Iriscal restored to what they were in centuries past, so they can be welcomed into the world to the thunder of hooves, and lances dipped in respectful salute.

Perhaps tenderness is the norm for others, perhaps it's meant to balance the payment of pain and blood due in child bed.

Perhaps I'll feel differently, when they lay the child in my arms.

Relationship Note on Alecstazi

A lot of those stories came from Audric himself, and they were different every single time. I won't defend Audric as a good man; he was not a good man, and he'd tell you that himself. But while I served under him, we never engaged in butchery. Fighting, yes. Ugly jobs, yes. That's the life of a sellsword, and he loved it. It would not surprise me to learn he did worse things than I was ever aware of.

Why I worked under Audric De Lire is a long story. I don't care to tell it here, but the short of it is this: I would never have been alive to come to the Compact if it wasn't for him. I would have been another dead, forgotten Abandoned corpse left to rot in the wilds, along with all of my tribe. And whatever reasons he had for what he did, selfish, unselfish, it doesn't change the outcome.

And, to be blunt, I was so naive and so angry when I first came to Arx that I'm fairly confident I would've been knifed in an alley within a month if I didn't have someone to watch my back and keep me from doing something particularly stupid.

Another week passes and still those ships are in the harbor while representatives walk freely in the city to gather intelligence and convert others to be less than loyal to the Compact. Either the Compact is strong enough to defend its people and borders, or just these few foreigners are stronger than all the people the king and high lords represent. That can’t be the case. But nations that respect each other should have formal and established relationships instead of representatives slinking around and given opportunities to keep pushing their propaganda.

Embassies for foreign powers and show respect to our king! Guest rite means you’re a guest, trespassers aren't the same as guests.

I really doubt any of the Cardians, Undying Empire or whatever other groups that are walking around here would read this, but if you hold yourselves as representatives instead of spies, then formalize with a permanent place. Build an embassy, establish relationships even if we aren’t allies, or leave.

I've had the joy of sharing a table and discussion with several of the peerage over the years, but the conversation that I had the other evening with the Laurents was something else entirely. It was fantastic, but so was the spread. Such an evening is something I look forward to as the warmer months stretch out before me.

Aunt Aida was perhaps my favorite part.

Some people enjoy the art of the argument. I don't really. It goes over my head a lot of the time. But I can see when one is having a discussion to try and convince someone of a new idea, of something important in order to help and enrich.

I can also see when someone is engaging in an argument just to try and make their opponent look foolish. They never had any intention of having an open mind or educating themselves. They will do anything they can in the discussion to point out contradictions or anything that may make their opponent look false or inept. Such a person is only here to fight. To quarrel. To contest.

Even if they said they just came here on behalf of worried people. It seems to me a person like that seems rather false. No matter how many pretty words they can make I don't understand.

My cousin Niccolo died this week. As a full first cousin (rather than one of my myriad once-removed kinfolk!), he was much too old for me to have ever served as one of his tutors. Indeed, where he was unquestionably someone of import, throughout my childhood and adolesence I was the spare daughter of a spare son and destined for little save a life among books. How fate chose to tweak the paths of both our lives.... I very much hope that he has found rest now. Whatever rumours might surround such a prominent Setarcan, he certainly suffered sorrows and losses aplenty.

It is deeply perturbing that there have been so many disappearances, both of late and in the longer term. Amidst all the deaths and assassinations, there is something particularly unsettling about people vanishing without trace: are they in hiding? Has their death been so remarkably hideous that it cannot be revealed? Still, amidst this I find myself particularly wondering whether anyone might know where to find Master Morton Waldo..?

Thank you to those who brought back news of the White Raven clan's impending raid on the villages near the Eyre Fells. Defenders from Stormwall have arrived to reinforce the militias of Grassmere, and it seems that the raiders have melted back into their own territories to the west, for now at least. There are rumors of a great shav'arvani chieftain working to unite the northern clans, but all of the information has more the feeling of fearful rumor or myth than aught else.

I am told that great crowds have come from miles around to hear Eslef, one of the greatest and most talented of Northland bards, sing the Lai of the Bear Slayer in the Butter Churn Inn, based on Lydia and Lygeia's account of Lady Tescelina Wyrmguard's battle with an enraged Northlands great bear. Rumors also persist that one of the greatest warriors of White Raven has sworn a blood oath to slay Prince Alecstazi Thrax, after he defeated the warrior's companion in the fells.

In all that transpired, I remain disappointed that we never got a chance to visit the hot springs - though I filled with gratitude that Princess Elgana Redrain, Arthen Dayne, Scout Rowenova and Duchess Delilah Shepherd decide to make the journey, as their actions protected countless families from raids and ruin.
