Log:

I experimented with the koi today in the Grotto. Lab notes--

Control: clear water.

Variable: polluted water.

Hypothesis: The fish will not survive in polluted water.

Observations: Water became cloudy and gray. Fish were hard to see. Were still alive at time of recording. Will check back in a few days.

When I was a boy, I was under the impression that being a gibbering moron was one of the hiring qualifications for Voice of a noble house.

Now that I am a man, in an adult life that has required me to work often and well with many powerful men and women, I'm relieved to report that I have found this to be the exception rather than the rule.

Unfortunately, the exceptions are exceptionally prolific from time to time.

I had a dream last night. In my dream there was a great shimmering golden dragon in the sky, and in his talons was a clock. The clock fell from the sky and crashed to the ground beneath him, shattering. The shards of glass spread to every corner of Arx.

Some of the population fell with a single strike of glass through the heart.
Some of the population ran and hid in the darkest of corners.
Some of the population ran into danger to save those who were only injured.
Some of the population turned to glass themselves, and walked around the streets - risking being shattered simply to be in the thick of things. Half survived, and half shattered themselves - a gamble of luck.

I stood in the window of the House of Solace looking out at them, and tears began to fall down my cheeks as I realized the world would be forever changed by this. The tears turned to glass, and sliced my feet as they dropped off my chin.

I can't imagine what lesson I'm to learn from this dream. They rarely mean anything, really - my dreams. Maybe it means - we can't cry for change. It comes. We can only be shaped by how we react to it. I awoke thinking of Prince Alecstazi Thrax. Peculiar indeed.

I really must stop drinking hot cocoa flavored with chili powder right before bed. It's so delicious, though!

Relationship Note on Aahana

A blessing upon your House, Lady Aahana, Cousin-by-marriage.

I cannot wait to spoil your daughter and teach her all my wickedly playful ways!

Don't worry, I'll aim her teasing at her father so you can be properly amused and not at all a target.

Let's see what the Admiral has to say about that!

Relationship Note on Sparte

From Jadairal, the Platinum Guard travels through the realms of the Prima, rulers who claim descent from the First Child of each particular race. Every citizen and thrall in their realm is eligible to stake an identical claim, but only those so insecure in their parentage as to speak it aloud are elevated to rule.

(In Arx'khat, the queen and the beggar are the same.)

The Guard arrives at a pyramid well-exposed to the moon, with blank sloping walls bereft of entrances, and learns of its creation:

People of various nations had an identical dream. They saw a figure running along a tapestry of passages within an unknown pyramid; he was seen from behind, with long hair, and she was naked. They dreamed of pursuing her. As they twisted and turned, each of them lost him.

(In dreams, women become men, plants become fish.)

Upon waking, the dreamers searched for the pyramid but instead found each other. They decided to build a pyramid like the one in the dream. In laying out the passages, each followed the course of their pursuit of the running figure; except at the spot where they had lost the man's trail, they erected walls that didn't exist in the dream, so she would be unable to escape again.

These new walls of history and logic and choice trapped them forever inside the pyramid. Interred in a crypt of stars.

(No single man prevails; no single man exists.)

Lately I've been spending time in the basement working on some new perfumes for myself. One wrong turn, and well, that wont give anyone anything positive. Blame the fumes and the confinments of the basement but it did make me wonder: if poison expires, is it more poisonous or no longer poisonous?

I like puzzles. The appeal of puzzles goes far deeper than the reward rush of finding a solution. The very idea of doing trying to solve a puzzle or finding something well hidden, typically shifts the brain into an open, playful state.

I heartily recommend visiting Kismet Hall if your mind feels a tad jaded.

Relationship Note on Domonico

Grand week for the Malvici family and so congratulations are in order, but not in order of importance:

Lord Domonico - Many blessings onto you for the birth of your first child. May it bring you happiness and pleasure and pride in her upbringing. Other than that, I know nothing about child rearing and bearing, so forgive me for not dishing advice from the uninformed.

Lord Martino - For his new appointment. If your sense of duty is as good as your sense of fashion, the Malvicis are in luck!

Lady Thea - For finally observing good blood! And I have nothing more to add to that.

Relationship Note on Alarissa

I would choose heartbreak, because there can be no reward without risk. The years I spent with first Prince Valen then Prince Fergus are by far some of my happiest memories. Even with the loss, the razor sharp pain of heartbreak when they rejoined the Wheel, I thank Limerance every day for that undeniable spark that was gifted to me twice.

My life would have been less if I had built walls around myself to protect my heart. I would not have these three beautiful children that inspire me to fight for a better future. So while yes, my heart is now lonely because I have known heartbreak of losing two husbands, I would never turn away Limerance's gift to protect myself from the what ifs.

Relationship Note on Alarissa

I would rather have a lonely heart, because the dull ache of solitude is far less damaging than the firebrand, scorching devastation of heartbreak that happens when the person who you loved the most, trusted above all others betrays you with foul intentions that forces you to look at others with a new lense. Shield yourself by building a fortress around your heart. Don scars that hide in plain sight.

Never thought I'd live to see the day when a Duke was peddling his own garments second-hand to finance projects. We live in such intriguing times. Strange but intriguing times. Would have preferred to see possibly a clothier help out, someone who would make certain the lord got what his gently used items were worth.

Mother will love to hear about this.

Laying in Redrain Garden, it is easy to see how we are all connected. As a compat. As a people. As that we are living creatures. You could almost feel it in the earth. It is eye opening what has been created with the dream.

Relationship Note on Elloise

My recommendations on visiting Elly's lab.

1) if you are already am energetic person, don't drink her potion. You will spend the night climbing the walls and thinking a sword shooting crossbow is a brilliant ideas.

2) Don't touch unknown vials. They /will/ explode.

3) Don't pick up things without asking. You will be tackled and maybe blamed when things fall apart.

4) Everyone should ask her for a tour. Her inventions are amazing.

Today I spent a significant amount of time in the Shrine of Lagoma speaking to all manner of people.

I was told about Druids, or Hierophants. Some cadre of folk called the Metallics. I was told that magic is complicated.

And I could not stop myself laughing. I mean really, is this some poor attempt at duping someone newly arrived to the city? I mean, please.

I had a more severe conversation focusing on the utter nonsense that much of the Peerage here in Arx has allowed. At first I thought this was just part of the foolishness about druids and magic and wizards. But a little digging showed me just how real this is.

I need a drink.

It has been at least eight years since the last time I was in Arx. Unsurprisingly, quite a lot has changed. The city is louder than I remember. Some of the landmarks are familiar, the markets, the city squares. But so many details are subtly changed. Walking through the sanctums, I expected the shrines of Lagoma and Jayus to have changed, but the Shrine of the First Choice and Shrine to the Queen of Endings are new. What was once the Shrine of the Lost now seems to favor the Dreamer.

Change, often said to be the only constant. In many ways this city seems to feed on change. New people, new Houses, new politics, new beliefs. From moment to moment, breath to breath everything is in motion. It is a frenzy at times. I stand still and watch and it seems as nothing stays still for longer than the space between heartbeats.

My question is this: When did we become a people of gamblers? Our ways are what they are because we know what works. What has always worked. This rush to adapt to the new ways feels reckless to me. When we begin to let our traditions slip away, we let our identities slip away. Once we say one thing is no longer sacred, soon all constants are lost. That is the slippery slope that leads to chaos, lawlessness. It starts with small things. Little shifts. Compromises. But it grows, it becomes easier to justify more and more until the moment it becomes clear that all we are all we were is lost forever. It cannot be coincidence that in this time of unprecedented change we are met with a rapid succession of challenges and threats. Perhaps this is the gods way of warning us that to continue along this path is dangerous and unwise.

I do not know the full story. I do not know the whys. And that is why I crossed the Mourning Sea and came to Arx. To hear. To listen. And I pray that I will begin to understand. So that I can go back to the scared people of the Mourning Isles who see their entire way of life changing, who are crying out, feeling abandoned, feeling unheard. I can go to them and explain. To reassure them that the world is not ending.
