...gone, just like that. Gone in the blink of an eye, so soon after we just found each other again.

I know writing here isn't going to fix anything, but.. fuck. You were my best friend.

Now who do I send mushrooms to?

Gods damn it, I hate laughing when I read the Duke Valdemar's white journals. He has some of the best comments on Arvum society I have seen.

I met her at the botanical gardens. She made fun of me for liking plants, but disliking bugs and animals. Very stern at first, but I think I hit a soft spot on her. She is my best friend in Arx. I trust her completely.

After reading and re-reading the ad stating that the once and former Sword Ashford is available for marriage, I found myself wondering why such might be necessary to advertise.

Truth is, I've been getting to know the Sword of Ashford Keep, and he is without a doubt exquisite husband material. If you are eligible, seriously consider this man as part of your future. He is sweet and kind and funny. He will do right by a new bride and provide delightful children whom he'll adore.

I would certainly consider him myself, but for the fact that I, too, am a Sword and my place is with my House.

This advertisement is endorsed by me and was not paid for by Ashford.

A quick snack and tea with Lady Ouida, and conversation about possible troubles back home troubles me.

Still, here is hoping that it amounts to little of note, being nipped in the bud.

But has he discovered *fire* yet?

Did I tell you the story about how, in retaliation for Aeryn breaking her favorite puzzle box, Kata took Aeryn's favorite goat stuffy and set it on fire? Soon, my liege. Soon your daughter will be equally mobile. And they will band together against you. And they know about fire. A note: Echo is trained to bark when danger is near. This will come in handy. She was always an excellent tattler on our brood. Without Echo or Oaken, our children are getting away with far more mischief than before.

On asking around, it seems the reason for the crash in seasilk prices is not known by others, merely that the merchants are pushing out their remaining stock before the next arrives. So - while they do so - it is so very important to get the last of this first stock. This still excellent quality seasilk.

Initial thoughts on the matter... the stuff arriving, perhaps, is not of our usual high standards. But that will not be known until it arrives.

Truly, that would be a shame for the merchants in the City.

Relationship Note on Peri

And that is, Lady Peri, an honest approach to the query. One I appreciate and praise you for.

In your approach, I would at least hope you may at least acknowledge your change in opinion when (and if) it changes. What I spoke on, however, are those who pretend as if their prior behavior never existed in the first place. It is particularly alarming in the case of those people who are decision-makers. In the case of people who proclaim themselves to be mediators or diplomats. Especially those who proclaim to be able to act as mediators. If they are one day dragging the names of others on a topic and decrying it, but then the next are attempting to make a name for themselves and to glean praise in support of that very topic...

...how is the general public meant to trust them as an unbiased party?

The purpose of discourse and debate is to sway minds and some of ours may be changed, yes. The recent story from one Skapti Thrallson regarding his own history gave me (and I imagine others) much to think about regarding the topic. While I do not support an immediate end to thralldom for the economic reasonings, I also now understand the other reasons he presented: it provides an alternative to death. Due to my station, that is something I never would have considered before. That is the sort of thing discourse allows. And had I not already been in support (for other reasons) of its continuation, it is highly likely I would have changed my mind for that reason alone.

After a chance meeting with the kind Duke in the Market, I was quite taken back by how earnest and diligent he is as a man.

Truly, where there is need, the Duke steps in and works it himself. He required a bit of help with the treasury and, well, rather than pay someone to see to it has been learning. Good trait to have in a leader for House Shepherd.

Well, Barf, at this rate you'll be the one remembered 500 years from now. I'll start putting aside some silver for a massive stone monument in your honor to be built on the road to Oakhaven. I hope you won't mind terribly if I make a small note of who rescued you from obscurity on the plaque because it will surely be forgotten otherwise. The inscription shall read:

"In Honor of Barf, the Most Determined Bog Dog, Friend of Prodigals and Defender of Oakhaven. Loyal Companion of Lady Whatsherface Keaton."

Relationship Note on Teagan

Teagan, You ask how one would trust someone who speaks support of something in public and then turns around to support the opposing side.

My answer depends on the person who is doing this. I consider their age and their breadth and depth of knowledge. If the person is just learning about a topic, perhaps they have not considered all of the aspects of it. As they engage with others, they will learn of more perspectives that they have not considered.

I consider myself. I don't have as much as experience as most in sussing out big ideas. When I try to understand things I feel like I have whiplash sometime. For example, with this issue of thralldom: why did I never think about what it means to be executed instead of put in thralldom? The other day the high inquisitor brought this to our attention in the whites. I have not changed my position, and I'm not sure I will, but now I have this to mull over. Maybe one day I will support an opposing view in public, though today is not that day. At my core being, I do not want others to suffer in thralldom. What does that mean? Now I am faced with many questions. Another: what does it mean to exile a person versus execute them directly?

I hope to always remain trustworthy.

Implied promises are the same as any other sort of promise.
If you say you will do something, do it. Give it your best effort.
Otherwise, your words mean nothing.

You should not have to swear an oath.

I appreciate that Master Fatchforth has corrected the record so to speak with respect to the issue of child thralls. And I'll apologize for being incorrect on that issue, for I know that my pen is one that some look to for guidance in matters of faith, which might make it one to seek certainty from in other matters. I don't actually recall if I addressed the issue of children in particular but I did have the mistaken impression that although children were not taken in Maelstrom that the vassal houses were autonomously free to do as they pleased.

So the correction here is that new thralls continue to be made, but not new child thralls. Crimes are still punished with thralldom and war thralls are still taken, but House Thrax has undertaken progressive measures to ensure that children are not among them. I have no desire to diminish the efforts at incremental change that Prince Victus has undertaken during his reign, as I believe he knows.

I don't pretend to believe that this means thralldom is on the verge of petering out on its own, but anything I wrote to the contrary with respect to the age of indentured persons should be corrected.

I was sent a gift the other day. Touched by this unexpected delight, I asked the giver why he had he had sent it, and he simply said that he had seen it, and thought of me.

It wasn't so much the gift that caused me to smile, but the knowledge that I had been in someone's thoughts.

Relationship Note on Skapti

I've never been a thrall, but I was Abandoned well into adulthood. I would have chosen death over thralldom, easily.

But that's the thing, isn't it? I would have chosen. You would have chosen. When the time came for /you/ to be a thrall, you didn't have a choice, as you said, because you didn't have the money. It was paid off for you, but if it had not been, you wouldn't be writing journals in Arx.

My ancestors were slaves a long, long time ago. They never forgot. Even after they were freed, they never stopped fighting against it. You don't have to care about those who weren't as lucky as you to escape. That's your choice to make. You don't have to care about the ones you helped drag into it. It was a shit situation and you had only shit options, and, again, that's your choice.

My choice is to fight. It has always been to fight. It's the least I can fucking do with what I've been given, and it's the least I can do to remember why.
