I thought all creativity perished under the snow. The chance encounter with a bit of inspiration remains rare and far between, dashing among my fingertips and taking flight out the door.

I say this in the dazzling light of my cousins' and sisters' brilliant execution of the art fair last eve. Laid low by this miserable ague -- albeit nothing serious -- I can speak to the brilliant ideas and the outstanding craftsmanship. Missing out on the singing contest strikes me hardest of all, though. I really would like to have heard the performances. Sometimes borrowing the spark from another fire ignites our own.

Yet, if I have any consolation, it lies in the pen and a sudden turn of verse that becomes something marvelously satisfactory.

My father is dead.
I suppose those are words that have to be said by everyone at some point.
But still they sound so alien, so wrong. Like they don't actually fit into this world.
How can someone who has been the very bedrock of your life be gone and you still remain? It defies all logic.
Even though he was in Setarco with our mother, he was the anchor that allowed Sebastian and I to battle the waves and face the storms. Knowing he would pull us back if we got to far out. Safe harbor to understand our mistakes and try again.

My father is dead, the world is forever... less.

I had a wonderful performance of my songs for the Metallics Gold and Brass. The turnout was excellent, but if anyone would like to have copies of the songs, I'll be delighted to provide them. The one for Brass got rave reviews, and I think it's easily one of my best. But Brass is a likeable historical figure, so making a likeable song was relatively easy.

I've been in Arx a week, and I'm being taken to some dinner. I don't think I've the clothes for it, though.

Apparently writing journals is a thing for those in the compact? I suppose I might as well start one, and see how I like it. We'll see.

It always surprises me how much I enjoy hosting events at the Academy. That particular group of people is engaging to be around, to listen to, especially when they begin talking about their projects. Good work is being done, and it's nice to know that I helped contribute in some small way.

The work that this man does, I do not have words for. I had heard good things, but I really had no idea how true it all was until I put the dress that he made on. It is a vision. I am well impressed.

Relationship Note on Jyri

I won some vouchers for paintings from Jyri at the latest Whitehawk Auction. I am now pondering what to request. Being familiar with his work, I know he will create art well worth the silver spent.

I grew up with a lot of kids who never really considered themselves commoners.

Usually didn't work out for them too well.

The Leatherback made harbor in Arx last night. I thought perhaps the journey south might bring some warmth, but apparently it's as cold as a witch's tits here in Arx just like out at sea in the northern isles. I still need to speak with Turo, but at least I can rest my bones by a warm fire now while I wait.

Relationship Note on Audric

I don't believe I've ever seen you write in the Whites without mentioning how you kill people or monsters or how fierce you are. Not that I disbelieve it, just I don't believe I've ever even seen you in person. Perhaps we could engage in a Rite of Gloria together, and perhaps you can give me some advice on killing monsters.

To maelstrom I have set sail, tend to some matters. Danse makes the journey with me, leaving Astrid to make her now weekly visits to Tyde instead of Grimhall, and Velenosa. The twins are too young and bringing all the family at once is not the wisest thing to do. I hope to stop at Darkwater on my return. Things have not been the same since the twins were born. I don't know what. It's worrisome. I'll bring Elegance with me. It's been sorrowful but at the same time, comforting to have her back at my side even if the reason for her return brings sad thoughts. I am out of sorts.

I am joyfully able tow rite that a generous, very generous donation from Mistress Aurora brought about the binding of the shackles of just a little over a thousand children. When I received word, I had to pause a moment and smile. Unexpected generosity. So I sail, to add to the list and see to the arrangements for the last batch and now this batch. Arrange the ships and supplies, make sure that those who remain behind are going to be cared for. Much to do. Five thousand. Over five thousand children in under three years. It makes me think that this could indeed happen before I am shuffled off to the wheel.
