Sword of Bastion, an honor well deserved. He saved my life on the high seas. There are few that are his peer in the fighting ring. I wish you well my friend. Guard the honor of your house well.

So many folk're dyin' at sea these days ... valiently or otherwise. Had my share of folks comin' in lookin' to have a drink and talk 'bout them what was lost. S'posin' I might offer them some comfort, dunno why, dunno how, but if'n it's helpin', power to 'em, ey? Need to get me some places to sit in here, I wager, that folk might be able to have a sit'n'sip atimes.

Met another brewer, I did. Dunno quite how to feel, I don't. Will say one thing, mind -- he appreciates the craft much more'n those what've been samplin' my exquisites as of late. Admit he caught me a bit unawares, he did, caught me fair with my knickers low. I'll be ready next time, fit square t'handle them sneaky words he speaks, aye. Maybe.

I do not argue about the definition of a word in a lexicon, but the meaning of something often goes beyond that which goes into dictionaries. After all, in a thesaurus we might find synonyms that, on their face, might make logical sense to be words with related, if not the same, meanings, but in philosophy and any other form of higher discussion, they will be torn apart and made so different that it will be like comparing apples to oranges.

That said, since Dame Alexis' question is mostly on what's the personal significance to one of being a soldier, I will indulge: a soldier is someone who chooses the trade of battle as their one profession. It is different than the villager who joins the militia to keep his people safe at night, or the recruit who joins the armies of his liege in times of war because that is his duty. A soldier is someone who marches, and often, even when they don't have to, when war to their people is not on the horizon, when the situation does not call for action.

One mustn't forget the soldier's importance to the army of any fief lord, because it is the soldier who trains the recruits and sets the standards they must ascribe to. It is the soldier who fights in the vanguard; always the first to join the battle, and the last to leave it. In doing so, battle is honored, and the soldier does right by Gloria.

The soldier often lacks the luxury to sleep in a bed, the soldier must spend days awake in order to reach his or her destination. The soldier carries some of the heaviest equipment, and, under fire, the soldier risks their life to keep those at their right and left safe from danger.

The soldier is, thus, not just a warrior. Nor is the soldier automatically a knight - that requires something else, also, that goes beyond the duty of soldiering. But the soldier is, and I've learned this in my dealings as a general, the backbone of all armies.

Feed them well, give them worthwhile equipment and above everything else, treat them with respect; if you are not a fighter, remember that they risk their lives so yours isn't threatened.

Moreover, I dedicate this to Sparte Fatchforth, who is a good soldier and a dutiful bannerman to his lieges.

I visited the training center, for the first time ever, last night. Now I wonder why I haven't done so sooner! I met so many new and interesting people, and it seems like it might be a good place to learn. There is always so much learning to do. Learning to fence, learning to speak Marin'alfar, studying the history of the Marin'alfar and their past interactions with the Compact. Wherever will I find time for all the things that I must learn?

Don't get me wrong, dear reader. I am not complaining, not at all. There were some who were worried that taking the vows of the Godsworn might limit me in what I can do in my life. I can assure you, this is entirely incorrect. I have never been more busy, and more fulfilled, than I am right now. And though I feel a sense of foreboding for what may be coming, there are gilded threads of hope woven through it, shining bright against the darkness.

I went to the Velenosa Grounds, quite beautiful I might add, to wish the very best to Count Giulio and Ilinca Corvini. I also found out I am terrible at delivering a jest. That is probably the last time I attempt such a thing without prior teaching, I'm sure my brother Drake would have been excellent in that regard. Alas I am not as smooth with that type of thing. Give me books, someone in need of my medical talents or a battle any other day. Maybe one day I might learn the art of humor. Or perhaps that's just not my forte.

With Scholar Oswyn gone I would like to introduce Scholar Hayward who is transcribing my journals! She doesn't have quite the ear for punctuation that Scholar Oswyn did, but I've instructed her to end every sentence that seems like it needs it with an exclamation point!

I see there are lots of people and messengers coming and going today! I bet that's because of Princess Caith and I finally squaring off to decide who is the best hugger! I hope everyone stops by tonight to get a hug (two really, you must compare!) and enjoy some wonderful food, drink, and conversation! Remember there will be a prize for whoever correctly bets on the winner AND comes closest to the vote count for that Princess! It is truly going to be a very fun event!

!!!!

I return to the city and there is drama as far as the eye can see. Truly, I already miss the sea and battle. First I should say, that though I only knew her briefly, the Fire Viper will be missed.

When it comes to soldiering, Lord Faruq is correct, a soldier follows orders, a good warrior is not by default, a good soldier. It is important to know from whence we come. On a boat there is no room to go rogue without consequence for the entire crew, every swab learns this immediately. The vitriol leveled at having this opinion is surprising for a city full of "civilized scholars." Maybe everyone is so bored they are just looking to manufacture excitement? Anyone who is looking for the zest is welcome to hang out with us Seraceni folk, we'll show you excitement that requires no over reaction to opinion.

In lighter news, I attended the most excellent dinner party complete with "unique" drinks, rogue alchemists, and people setting themselves on fire. Malika says she didn't do it, I'm still up in the air..... Thanks for getting me home Faruq! I owe you one.

Relationship Note on Joslyn

You are very correct. The examples I used were needlessly simplistic and not at all representative of the point I was trying to make. The issue I am trying to express is that opinions based on in matters that can be factually be proven or disproven, can themselves be factually correct or incorrect if they are based on misinformation. Which, upon reflection, echoes Lady Prisila's words about opinions be able to be 'misguided'. Though I really prefer the term 'misinformed'. ...And I begin to see the pedant that people are complaining about.

I think the issue that really bothered me was the idea that there is an equivalency between opinion and fact. That is a slippery slope towards madness, believing the two have equal weight. However, upon rereading the pages I had read before, I do not think that was the case made.

That being said I am being woefully pedantic and do not have any excuse for it other than... sometimes I can be woefully pedantic. This is a ridiculous hill to die upon, however, and if I have caused offense, then I happily and sincerely, offer my apologies to those injured by my words.

Relationship Note on Holt

I'm still not sure how to feel about what Holt told me the other night. It's made it difficult to focus while we were sparring or while we applied to join the Crimson Blades. I'm going to have to talk to him about it, but it's embarrassing. Well, we also passed our applications even though I thought I did pretty poorly on the test.

Miriam informed me that I'd somehow inspired a... Lot of writing, with my current project. I'm flattered to have gotten the attentions of luminaries of various sorts offering their thoughts.

I would like to clarify one thing, about the project. It's not about the definition of the word soldier, but a specificially phrased question, in which I shall put some emphasis.

"What does -being- a soldier mean to -you-".

It is very much a matter of collecting individual perspectives. This is why I sometimes muse about the perspectives I've collected, or ask people to clarify.

I thank you all for your contributions.

Relationship Note on Faruq

I understand why some have said Lord Faruq's definition of a soldier is to simple. And while it is a much bigger equation than that, he is not all together wrong.

Following orders, especially in battle, is a vastly more complex thing than we think at times. To follow orders you need the discipline to perform your role. The courage to stand your ground, The loyalty to believe in your commanders orders, and the trust that your comrade will protect your flank and back even as the protect yourself.

These are all part of following orders. And Lord Faruq's very astute that these qualities that make so you follow orders will extend your life on the battlefield longer than being the best of swordsmen ever.

I am done reading or writing into the whites. From now on my thoughts will be documented in the Blacks alone. If someone wished to speak with me, they should send a messenger. I haven't the time, nor the inclination now, to sift through any of this and believe the scholars would accomplish so much more if people weren't making them sift through other people's musings.
