Relationship Note on Edain

Prince Edain and I have come a long way since the days of the Redrain Reception. He's been the most kind-hearted, trustworthy soul I know. There aren't many other men who are so mild-mannered and incredibly polite, even when they're offering critical commentary on things that absolutely make no sense. He's honorific, and not afraid to stand up for what he cherishes and believes in. I'm proud to call him my good friend, as well as Alis.

Relationship Note on Ansel

Lord Ansel is a good man, one who didn't hesitate to accept an invitation to come together over lunch and get to know each other for the good of our Houses. He's smart, intelligent, and incredibly insightful.

So she's a scholar and apparently researches things so that lazy asses can then put her information to use.

I wonder what it would be like to work for a lazy ass.

[ From the desk of B. Mercier, Information Analyst: ]

That is an awkward mouthful, yes. I might settle with Researcher.

It is truly a surreal experience when someone - someone of rather daunting status, yet, still maintaining a personable warmth and an air of mystery asks what you want to do -

And your thoughts fail you.

Within the same breath, you finally take the first step forward to become a Scholar.

With new questions to consider.

It has been a while since I last visited. I know it is my fault for allowing situations and hurt feelings come between our friendship. Know that you have always been on my mind and will continue to be on my mind.

We sit in your favorite spot to let the warmth of the sun bathe our bodies but we sit in silence for the most part. I wonder if you hear the things I say to you, the things I share with you; recent news and updates. Do you hear me when I tell you about -her- and the odd circumstances about her? It's not your fault.

I remember the last conversation we had. You said you'd come back to me. I admit I've gone through the highs and lows of grief, thinking if I say goodbye I can move on. But you became a friend when I needed one.

I no longer say goodbye to you. I am still here to be your friend when you need one, whether or not you can see me, hear me, or feel me. I am here for you.

I need to invent new curse words to encompass the ever-increasing level of horrific shit that I am learning about. Sometimes 'fuck' isn't strong enough.

As my poor nephew today found out, there's shit coming out of every angle. What word could I invent to describe the mixture of rage, terror, and frustration I feel on a daily basis?

Ferrage.

Sounds too much like marriage.

Maybe that is a good curse word.

Relationship Note on Leo

What is there to see of Duke Fidante? He will be joining the family soon, chosen as husband by my daughter. He is, by all accounts a good man. An honorable man.

But I'm still a father, and that is still my daughter he's marrying her.

I hope he does well by her.

I can't believe it. Dawn. She is going to sacrifice herself to those.. elves. I don't understand it. I won't pretend to understand it. Why do we have to stoop down to kill our own for those pretentious bastards to help us? It has to be blood magic. It has to be something about their sacrifice that fuels their blood magic. I am distraught over this. There -had- to be another way. However, this is the path that was chosen.

Hello again, annoying chore and boring person reading this. I have dictated a few notes about people in my life to satisfy the disciples and my family, and now I get to regale you with grand tales of the eventful week. Only I won't. I refuse. The assembly hall was full of people who have probably spent a dozen octopi worth of ink on describing in detal what happened.

I guess, since the disciple of Vellichor who I am dictating to is giving me the stink-eye, I will summarize my thoughts. It was a big meeting. Information we had covered in the low council was shared with all. Votes were had. Dawn stepped down, and went off to be sacrificed for the Teind. The end. Heh, a clever bit of rhyming there, huh? Oh, more stink-eye is it? Fine.

King Alaric, riding upon his mighty steed, led a hunt, of which my father was a member, into the Night's Grove, thus interrupting the Tiend, a ritual the Twilight elves, that's the Nox'Alfar, use to keep the Sun Elves, that's the Rex'Alfar, from invading. They slaughtered the party and punished the king by casting his soul out of him to wander. Apparently we had an ancient treating with the Twilight Elves to not annoy them. Now we must make amends for being annoying and for interrupting the Teind. We must offer thirteen individual to be sacrificed and someone has to marry an elf. Why the last one, who knows? I don't think that's part of the ritual. I suspect the elves just like what they see of our very handsome and beautiful men and women. I can't blame them for that. I'm quite the looker myself. I mean I would stare into a mirror, looking at myself, all day long, you know, if that wasn't dangerous and horribly self-absorbed. Anyways, the Sun Elves are gathering an army by tricking people into thinking they're doing the work of the gods and plan to invade. We think they serve Archfiends, but really it could be because elves are just plain arses, at least from what I can tell from our interactions with them.

Regardless Dawn has her twelve volunteers and herself and she is off to complete the ritual. I think it was a bit foolish to step down so soon after taking office and putting us back into a regency crisis again, but I applaud her willingness to not have anyone do somethng that she herself will not do. That's some leadership. Though, she could have done a better job answering questions and thinking things through a bit. There is that enough? Are we done now? Stop with the stink-eye already, gods.

Relationship Note on Khanne

[This entry is written in a precise, flowing, almost delicate hand.]

I sat to write of Sigurd, and yet everything I thought of came out as written of Lady Khanne Halfshav; I will write on Sigurd another time.

Lady Khanne Halfshav is the North--she is no -less- or -more- Northern than any other Halfshav, I imagine, nor her liegelords, nor her House's vassals(to be more or less Northern would not be Northern enough). I was raised, partially-but-mostly, in Whitehold. Halfshav territory. But it is not until speaking to many Lords of the North regarding a personal project that I earned her ire. There is a fullness in her ire, a resoluteness, that is entirely Northern--and yet there was one evening where I had yet to earn this(perhaps fully-deserved ire); there, as an acquaintance, a stranger, she was vibrant and lively.

Imagine then what an ally she would be--every time I sell my position to the North, I invite her along--it is in the hopes that I may convince her still. The North is as House Redrain is--as House Halfshav is, as Khanne is. Hard to win over, but loyal beyond death, if so.

Relationship Note on Aleksei

[This entry is written in a precise, flowing, almost delicate hand.]

Aleksei is the sort of man every one ought to aspire to be--he does not take himself seriously, but he takes his work, words, and friends seriously. He separates the gravity of what he is capable of and ought to do--the gravity of the times--from the lightness that is a man here for a short time with a very small part to play--and I would describe even a King so. We play a small part, one of millions.

Some of us are more important than others, but the section of the play we see--for we cannot even see behind-the-scenes, much less others' roles--is small. Whether Aleksei sees that or inherently knows it? He lives it.

Relationship Note on Dawn

Former Lady Regent Dawn is or was, depending on when you read this, a fascinating woman. I have only encountered her a handful of times, but I feel, had there been more time, we would have become friends. She has a good head on her shoulders and an eye for getting to the truth. However, she is guarded, it seemed, and would make decisions, such as this most recent one, that seemed to come out of nowhere. Still, as stoic as she tries to be, she would laugh at a joke and smirk a bit at a prank. There is a bit of humor in there somewhere.

I have locked myself away for days--I was tempted not to approach the Archives, for fear I might attempt to get this work out of me--early, unrefined, unfinished. It drains me...but I must step forward and write of something--anything--else. But what?

Relationships--I hear this is the thing to do, so I suppose I shall.

Sketches, bunched together. All swords. Swords embedded in rock, grass, cracked dirt. Swords come grouped in threes or fives or tens. Most of the groupings are tens. The swords themselves are almost indifferently drawn, plain gray with only a hint of hilt, one almost identical with another. Unfinished quality to the chalk drawing, as if the artist lost focus and wandered off.
