Relationship Note on Aldwin

I needed the conversation that he provided. The uncertain season has turned the world over on its face. For him, I would even drink tea.

Relationship Note on Drea

I don't get it. Maybe I never will. All I can hope for is the day we understand each other, and that someday you'll be alright with who I am.

Relationship Note on Khanne

[This entry is written in a precise, flowing, almost delicate hand.]

I sat to write of Sigurd, and yet everything I thought of came out as written of Lady Khanne Halfshav; I will write on Sigurd another time.

Lady Khanne Halfshav is the North--she is no -less- or -more- Northern than any other Halfshav, I imagine, nor her liegelords, nor her House's vassals(to be more or less Northern would not be Northern enough). I was raised, partially-but-mostly, in Whitehold. Halfshav territory. But it is not until speaking to many Lords of the North regarding a personal project that I earned her ire. There is a fullness in her ire, a resoluteness, that is entirely Northern--and yet there was one evening where I had yet to earn this(perhaps fully-deserved ire); there, as an acquaintance, a stranger, she was vibrant and lively.

Imagine then what an ally she would be--every time I sell my position to the North, I invite her along--it is in the hopes that I may convince her still. The North is as House Redrain is--as House Halfshav is, as Khanne is. Hard to win over, but loyal beyond death, if so.

Relationship Note on Aleksei

[This entry is written in a precise, flowing, almost delicate hand.]

Aleksei is the sort of man every one ought to aspire to be--he does not take himself seriously, but he takes his work, words, and friends seriously. He separates the gravity of what he is capable of and ought to do--the gravity of the times--from the lightness that is a man here for a short time with a very small part to play--and I would describe even a King so. We play a small part, one of millions.

Some of us are more important than others, but the section of the play we see--for we cannot even see behind-the-scenes, much less others' roles--is small. Whether Aleksei sees that or inherently knows it? He lives it.

Relationship Note on Dawn

Former Lady Regent Dawn is or was, depending on when you read this, a fascinating woman. I have only encountered her a handful of times, but I feel, had there been more time, we would have become friends. She has a good head on her shoulders and an eye for getting to the truth. However, she is guarded, it seemed, and would make decisions, such as this most recent one, that seemed to come out of nowhere. Still, as stoic as she tries to be, she would laugh at a joke and smirk a bit at a prank. There is a bit of humor in there somewhere.

I have locked myself away for days--I was tempted not to approach the Archives, for fear I might attempt to get this work out of me--early, unrefined, unfinished. It drains me...but I must step forward and write of something--anything--else. But what?

Relationships--I hear this is the thing to do, so I suppose I shall.

Sketches, bunched together. All swords. Swords embedded in rock, grass, cracked dirt. Swords come grouped in threes or fives or tens. Most of the groupings are tens. The swords themselves are almost indifferently drawn, plain gray with only a hint of hilt, one almost identical with another. Unfinished quality to the chalk drawing, as if the artist lost focus and wandered off.

Relationship Note on Morrighan

Morrighan is the fiery servant girl that father found and let into our family. She can be stubborn, aggressive, and quite grumpy at times, but she is irreplaceable. She's caught me bathing in the Augury, disrupted a prank, and has brawled me a couple times, even. However, she can be depended on for her fierce devotion to the family and ability to listen and provide help when needed. Also, she frequently has whiskey to steal. I wouldn't trade her for the world. though, I would approve if she was a bit less punchy.

Relationship Note on Max

(Footnote attached to a diary entry)

Owner of the Black Mountain Trading Company and the Count of Darkwater, I feel more and more like Max and I are becoming true friends. At first, he seemed like just another Thraxian navigated by his little figurehead, but it would seem he's got a slightly more thoughtful spare on his shoulders. Even better? He actually called my unfortunate skirmish with the Reaver Prince as valorous and a 'smashing success.' If only Father could have been there to hear him say that.

My Duchess got older today! Of course, she does so every day (and every second, for that matter), as do we all. But of particular note was her birthday party, held at the Pravus house within the Lycene quarter. In spite of a few less-than-couth interludes, it seemed to go well. And the unexpectedly collaborative nature of the entertainer's song was particularly effective in providing amusement. In spite of the strong impulse to take it all as proof of just how far beyond youth I must now be, I have to admit that I rather markedly enjoyed myself.

Relationship Note on Barric

Prince Barric Grayson has chosen to indicate he cares little for his personal honor by refusing to respond to peer's challenge. I made no public spectacle of my challenge, and I gave the prince one final opportunity to name his champion or submit his apology, but he has deigned to ignore the demands of his honor.

Thus, I feel free in announcing that Prince Barric Grayson publicly admits his fault in writing words of an honorless and unkind nature regarding his kinswoman Lady Dawn shortly after she left the city to secure the lives of everyone in the Compact, including his own. I take his refusal to meet this challenge as an admission of his failure to his family, his house, and his honor.

I am sure the esteemed leaders of House Grayson will be very proud to hear of his effusive apology in maligning one of their own.

Relationship Note on Leo

(Footnote attached to a diary entry)

(Duke?) Leo and I met on the basis of trade, and we've diligently continued as allies these many months. I'm surprised and delighted to have heard the good news about his marriage, even if I myself will diligently resist such matters for as long as possible. Beyond this, I would be happy to one day grow our relationship from business to friendship.

Relationship Note on Harald

(Footnote attached to a diary entry)

Uncle Harald was one of the few adults that felt truly on my side when I was younger. I could always count on him to give me wise advice, and he even let me get away with a few minor mishaps. It's a blessing to have his counsel in Arx, not least of which because he also won't replace me as Voice.

There's nothing like somebody doing a backflip away from your weapon swing to make you feel like a big, hulking, lumbering oaf. I swear to the gods and all who read this journal that I have never, not once, ever lumbered anywhere. I am also very convinced I am not an oaf, although an oaf probably wouldn't know if they were an oaf, would they? But an oaf also wouldn't know THAT, so I that is why I am confident.

Perhaps I need to start doing more runs and jumping jacks to get my exercise.

There are pikes outside the Velenosa estate. Atop these pikes are the heads of people. The bugs will come soon if they have not already.

It almost makes me feel as if I am in the Thraxian ward.

Marriage must be very difficult for the great nobles of Arvum. Not only are you required to honor a fidelity contract but you must chose a single bride or groom.

Sometimes, you must also fight another lord who has the frightening title of "Sword" of something. Not to mention the problems of picking your bride or groom.

I am glad this is not a concern I will have being a humble courtesan. I am free to show those I love my care for them without worries of intrigue. I need not worry about marrying to continue my line, or bring in prestige for my family.

Of course, being a commoner, should I ever marry it would be because someone had claimed my heart completely. And should that person then suggest we be allowed to also have other loves--

I would cut out his heart to remind him that it is mine.
