Standing alone against what lies beyond is one of the best ways to be swallowed by that which dwells in the void. Yet to bring others to stand with you is to condemn them to a fate that may see them destroyed, either body or mind.

What you did was a way of making a woman into an object to be possessed without her consent. It's not okay. It's especially not okay when it's my fucking cousin, and putting it on her to tell you to stop doing something no reasonable person would do it the first place is also not okay. If you want to be treated like more than a glorified pirate, act like it.

I was awoken from a dead sleep to...screaming. Loud screaming. So I rushed out in time to a loud howl. I thought for a brief a moment that it was Finn, but no. He was still on the couch sleeping. Still running, blade in hand, I went to follow the scream but found..nothing. What is going on?! I apologize for the glimpse to those that saw me running in just well--a robe. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

I write about war because it is a subject of which I have intimate knowledge. But what of peace?
Peace does not simply mean the absence of conflict. There has been an absence of conflict in many repressive societies. This lack of conflict does not have its roots in harmony, goodwill or the consent of the parties involved, but often in fear, ignorance and powerlessness. There can thus be no real peace without justice or consent.
Peace does not simply mean tranquillity. The affairs of state are in incessant flux. No relationship remains the same from one day to the next. New situations are forever arising and demand constant attention; tensions build up and need to be defused. There can thus be no real peace without constant effort, planning and hard work.
Peace therefore is neither an absence of conflict or a condition of stagnation, but a frame of mind.
It is a frame of mind in which countries, communities, parties and individuals seek to resolve their differences through agreements, through negotiation and compromise, instead of threats, compulsion and violence. It is a frame of mind that seeks to devise rules, laws, agreements and conventions as mechanisms for the peaceful resolution of the inevitable clashes of interest. It is a frame of mind whereby the irresistible and dynamic processes of social, economic and political development can be regulated and accommodated.
In our quest for peace we should constantly ask ourselves what we should do to create conditions in which peace can prosper.
Peace does not fare well where poverty and deprivation reign. It does not flourish where there is ignorance, repression, and exploitation. It is threatened by fear, envy, and unrealistic expectations. It is destroyed by intolerance and prejudice. And because the vast proportion of human history has been characterized by such conditions, it should not surprise us that much of history has been a lamentable tale of violence and war.
So it is that I write of war because the alternative will not come until we address those conditions.

Though I think she's exaggerating, Lady Jael has herself to blame in part. I do recall she gave me my first serious lessons, as I was in complete awe of her skill with the bow and in the saddle (and still am). The rest is largely Uncle Norwood's fault.

Captain Veena's corpse now swings above the entrance of the fortified lagoon of Morisco beneath a carved driftwood sign that reads, 'Death to Slavers.' She was intelligent, willful and a talented seawoman, who fought with distinction in the Battle of Setarco and in the battles for the Isle al'Aswaq. She was apparently interrogated by Lord Ian Kennex after her capture, and the report from Captain Tancred describes Veena's selling people of the Lowers of Arx to the Skal'dajans, as being motivated by her desperation to buy back her captured crew.
Sad reflections followed, and, to sink them to the depths, I visited the Black Fox upon returning to Arx. Happily, I encountered Lady Thea among those present and a crass but good-humored conversation was shared, until the arrival of Duchess Calypso. She was furious with me, and some heated words were exchanged, but I must here record my apology and some explanation not irrelevant to my reflections upon the fate of Captain Veena.
I am sorry, Duchess, for any disrespect to your cousin from me or my free-sailing pirates. The painting is not used for the purposes your outrage supposes. Ischia is full of beautiful people, and any one of them might provide a form for lusty dreams. The reason the crew of The Runner holds Lady Thea in such high esteem is because of her skill and courage. She has sailed with us against the slavers of the Chain, saved the lives of many - including my own - with her skill in medicine, and brought the traitors among us to justice. She is revered among our crews by merit, and when the jaws of death gape before the men and women of The Runner, amid all the horrors of naval war with our great enemy, they will look upon one whom they respect and take courage.
There is much humor and baseness among those who spend their short lives at sea in search of plunder and fame. We mean no offense for our lack of decorum amid close friends, and what's said in our wildest moments, should not be understood to be the thoughts we hold in our hearts and convey to our gods.

It's a wonder, the way thoughts and feelings bloom with space and time.
I've lingered awake and drafted letter's I won't finish, to new friends and the old. For years, I've held on to them by threads, and relinquished so many more--but this city tangles its webs tight. Names always remembered but long unheard return to me, and I find the words to completion.

I find myself thinking back on the quiet discussions we've had over tea in the Keaton gardens and feel like a whole lifetime has passed between then and now. I never doubted that there was more to it all, and to you as well. Thank you for trusting me to come along on your endeavors! I feel like I will need to soak my aching muscles in a hot bath for a few days, though, but I'm not even regretful about it.
