Back in the city. For anyone who has met me before...

Sorry.

*A string of curses is written here and it makes no sense. Further down is a series of stains on the page. Thankfully it looks like it progresses into a legible hand*

Mister Orathy appears to be unable to write his own journals at the moment. He has accepted that I will write them for him today, a disciple of Vellichor. He is presently angry and frothing most vile words. I'm not quite certain about the root cause but I can report here in his pages that he's bemoaning an axe that he claims was stolen from him. He...

*Here the ink blots out and it looks like the writer was stopped mid sentence as the ink smears across the page*

*Further sloppy handwriting is made here and it doesn't seem like anyone can determine what it reads, save for L A R I C*

I promise we will still do a snow sculpture competition! Terribly sorry for all who came hoping for fun and prizes and more orderly entertainment than a garden full of snow, absent hostesses! The baby took terribly ill and we simply couldn't make it down. She's doing much better now -- still fussy, but keeping down milk.

But I look forward to seeing what you all come up with once the day comes. Thank you all for understanding.

You had my back, didn't you?

Without hesitation you stood for me. I didn't need it, but there you were ready to go without a word. Not molly coddling me. Just there. Ready. Waiting. Holding my back.

At the time I didn't see it. I do now. Thank you.

Very proud of my little brother the Whisper, I've heard many compliments about him this week.

I am so often tired this winter. I think all the snow is getting to me. I miss the warmth of spring and summer. Swimming and fishing and losing whole days in the woodlands on a good hunt. It particularly gets to me in the city, I think. The stone always seems cold to me, and true cold makes it even more so. One of these days I'll spent a month or so in the Twainfort, among its rivers and visiting my tribesfolk. Likely not for awhile, though. Duty, and what my life has become in this city, hold me here. And I joy in them and know I'd miss them if I left Arx even for a visit.

I had a very fine day in the shrine of Mangata which took my mind from the cold, though. It still feels a wild place, even as the koi swim beneath a light layer of ice and the birds are quieter during the snows. The winds and rains and rivers and seas call so strongly to my heart that I'm used to the ache of it, and nearly forget it until I'm paying attention.

In a few months, it will be spring, and then after summer again. I shall swim in the oceans and lose myself for hours in the waves. But, for now, I'm grateful for the snow, too, and the more chill breezes, for ice is the domain of the goddess, too, and brings its own cleansing sort of comfort.

I submitted my name for the Commoner's Council because I care very much about the plight of the downtrodden of Arx or at least that's what I like to write about in these journals and tell people over and fucking over when they never asked really what I like is hearing myself talk and having people praise me for talking about things rather than actually doing anything and I'm looking forward to being in a room where other people also enjoy that as we try to outdo each other instead of actually enacting fucking change when people are freezing to death in their beds while we argue amiably over Crown provided food and drink at our stupid fucking meetings.

You know how far that two hundred and fifty silver application fee can go in the Lowers? Joining the Commoner's Council is never going to raise you above your fucking station as a commoner. Your voice is never going to be heard. No one fucking cares beyond being able to pat themselves on the back to say they're talking about one day maybe thinking about people below their own station. And we love to talk a big game about how the nobles only pay attention to us when they want to make themselves feel good, but shit like this is the same thing on a lower scale. Go ahead, let them pat you on the head and hear your very well thought out positions.

It won't make a fuck of difference to those that need it.

The first thing this new Commoners Council should do is host a fundraiser for House Wyrmguard. It's sad that their Marquis is having to beg commoners for money in the form of filing fees.

Perhaps we can do something for First Bloom next month. Something nice at Nightingale Park. "Bring life to the pride of Blancbier" or something like that. A real feel good initiative!

Relationship Note on Margret

I am so thrilled that little Lord Marcus Greenmarch has made his entrance into the world. I know that you and Alessandro will be terribly wonderful parents. And I'll do my very best not to spoil him too rotten. No promises.

Congratulations, Mags. I can't wait to hold him.

We're all absolutely terrified of cake. Definitely do NOT bring any cake to the Iron Guard barracks under ANY circumstances. It will cause a HUGE uproar.

Reading about all these kind generous souls wanting to help rule their fellow commoner in the council warms this old man's heart. You'd think all these people already have enough to do with their day jobs, but no, they've still got time to make sure others are living the right way. How nice.

The first journal day feast had a small turnout, but I was so happy to make the announcements of the new bookshelves, and to announce the official reinstatement of Senior Scholar Rinel. I also promoted Sparte Fatchforth to the rank of Senior Scholar, given his many projects and his steadfast assistance over the past few months.

I will continue to hold these events, so that Scholars can meet and discuss issues important to them, and so that those outside the Scholars can come and raise any questions they might have for us. Meanwhile, I hope that everyone will come by the Stacks and admire the new bookcases. They are simply divine.

Over the next few months, I will be working to refurbish much of the Academy, replacing old desks with newer, sturdier ones. The Reading Room will receive some attention too, as well as the Hall of Tutelage. Other renovations and restorations will be done as well. I also plan to find a prominent place to display Sister Gisele's beautiful Canticle of Vellichor in the Shrine. There are so many things to do, so many projects in the works, but I think it will all serve to the betterment of the Scholars that we might better serve Vellichor.

Relationship Note on Margret

I was lucky enough to hold the tiniest and most handsome Greenmarch today and have a lovely chat with his radiant, brilliant, and beautiful mother. Seeing how Lady Margret is able to do so much for our city as well as bless us with this newest addition to our population, I was inspired to ask her if she would allow me the honor of being her patron. I am sure I will get more out of this new arrangement than she is -- she was probably doing me a favor by saying yes, but I look forward to it, nonetheless.

I'm almost a proper adult these days. Hush, now -- Don't tell anyone.

I have been pondering much of late on how people present themselves as individuals to the various powerful organisations in the city.

If you are wanting to become close with one group, you must consider who else you are close to. Not all groups will get along, not all people will get along. If you say you wish to be a friend to some, yet you draw support from or support in turn those who would seek to harm them, it casts doubt on you - either on how invested you are in matters, how honest you are being in them or perhaps just questioning your awareness if you do not see the risk.

I would tend to suggest honesty is important, but most of all with yourself. You cannot be everything to everyone. Not everyone will love you. Some people will hate you. Accept that. Your life will be better for it. But, also understand that membership will bring limitations. As long as it is legal and proper, no-one should stop anyone from doing things, but that does not mean that they should not comment upon it nor that they should allow such a thing to occur in their name. For the Faith this came in the purging of the influx of shamanist supporters to some discipleships. For the Crown this might come in limitations on who can be an inquisitor, because loyalties must be clear. And so on.

Just a musing.

Well. My attempts to get a ranging force started in Thrax have not gone well - but I suppose I'll just need to rethink and approach it from another angle. We do tend to prefer our forests floating and transformed into boats, I suppose.

A great joy for our family! Margret and Alessandro have brought a new Greenmarch into the world, and I have a nephew to utterly spoil as a proper uncle. A hearty congratulations to the both of them and warm welcome to Marcus Greenmarch, well-named for our honorable ancestor.

Ashford House held an open house, hosted by Master Cedric. It was a lot of fun, and very nice to see Duke Harlan downstairs! (He was wounded, and is slowly recovering so that is a very nice thing.)

Lady Olivia was darling, as usual, and I got to meet Lady Rhiannon for the first time. She seems a bit quieter and shy, but she is also lovely. There were quite a few guests and Cedric got them all to throw pastry at each other for the 150th annual pastry toss.

I do not recall last year hearing of the 149th, but - perhaps I managed to miss it, with everything ongoing.

I managed to offend someone important today. Again. I'm awful with the nobility.

But, on the bright side, it's provided an opportunity to enter the Whisper House! For etiquette training. I've never really interacted with the Whispers professionally.

...I hope I don't offend them, too.
