I've submitted my name for consideration as a member of the Commoners' Council! I hesitated at first-- little Juniper of the Mountains, come from a mining camp to sitting at Council with others to debate weighty matters which affect so many lives? It seemed too great a thing. But then someone said it wouldn't be a poor thing to have a Peacemaker at the table, and I do try to be that. So in my name went, and double the filing fee too, so that if there's someone else who might want to apply but can't afford it, their fee will be paid.

I'm not certain how to present myself as someone worthy of votes. I can spin an alliance between ducal Houses, soothe a soldier's troubled heart, or bring a smile from tears, but outlining why I deserve something more than someone else-- and there are some brilliant people stepping forward as contenders!-- doesn't feel as comfortable to me.

So I decided: from now until the vote, I invite questions as to my suitability. If there is a question you'd like to put to the eventual Council, I'll give my own opinion. If there's a hope you have for the future and want to know how I would help build it, write to me for an answer. If I accidentally stepped on your toe in the street and didn't immediately apologize and you want to know /why/, now's your time!

I will, as ever, be honest in expressing myself.

First day in the city! It was snowy and freezing, which was an ominous start. The Sleepless Knights bar was cozy enough, though; they served me up hot milk without batting an eye! I was afraid of being seen as weak, or something. It's good, because nothing else really chases away the chills.

There were two strangers there, and they left an odd impression. One of them stood up, a burly man, and claimed his companion, a knightly looking lady, had twisted her ankle (at the table?). He proceeded to carry her off into the snow. Seemingly the rest of the bar, two guards and a bard, quickly followed them out. They hadn't interacted before that, though.

Anyway, I need to focus on finding my sisters, and also acquainting myself with the Wyrmguards here in the city. Marquessa Dominique set me up with a room, but I've hardly met her. And dear Yessica... she's probably up to trouble, in that way of hers.

To my disbelief, I had not been to an Annual Ashford Pastry Toss before- so the 150th was a good number to start on.

To my further disbelief, I did not know the handstand tricks I had been doing at the challenge of Harlex would ever win me anything.

To Prince Talwyn's disbelief, I have no shame and a terrible capacity for whimsical amusement at his expense.

To Princess Terese's disbelief, I executed a perfect backflip into a handstand, kicked a falling, jam-covered scone bit into the centre of her brother's face, and masterfully nailed the front handspring- without knocking over the table and sending food and drinks everywhere.

Not a bad evening.

Newly returned to Arx, I decided to reaquaint myself with the social circles by attending an event held in the Thraxian courtyard. It was an interesting take on history, one I managed to listen avidly too despite nearly losing sensation in my fingers!

I have found that history is mutable, details are washed away, nuances fade, and context is rendered lost. There are many times I have begun my researching thinking a historical personage is one thing, only to find out that it is but only one small facet of a very complex whole.

They were, after all, once people like us, with foibles and failings, even the heroes and legends we sing of.

I'm currently working with several people to expand the Raconteur Enterprises into yet more parts of Arvum. For those whom do not know, I am looking to forge means across Arvum to employee people as brewers, to give fun and near-free entertainment as part of the Kismet Carnivals to remind everyone in these trying times that there is still a means of enjoying yourself and finding inspiring stories of hope. Other things are afloat, as well. If you are interested in a partnership that will bring work to the people of your land, and will favor your local regional skills and ingredients in cultivating something unique for your people? Consider this an open offer to reach out.

It would seem, in such situations, the wisest path is to save the scream, and let it all out after the bugs are dealt with. (or after they've eaten you... which I'm presuming did not happen, given your journal entry.)

Went to Sorrel's Metallic Song bit the other night. This one was on Cobalt. Brought one of the blades we found to it. Don't hardly ever wear it typically. Not my style. If you're gonna go to a concert about them though, seems only fitting to bring one of the first set that was ever recovered though, don't it?

In any case, an old acquaintance, Ian was there. Gave him a place on my ship years back for a few runs to help him get his footing. Seems the young man's gone and got himself married. Knocked her up and everything.

Others, as well of course. Aella, and her brother, Cadern, though I don't know him nearly as well. That Thrall Champion, Caspian I saw I think. Some princes and princesses... Don't think I'll ever get used to that. Reasonably sure I'd be hanged before I sat a table with any of a High Lord's family, much less multiple.

I put my name in the hat for the Commoner's Council, which surprised me a bit. I didn't think I wanted even -more- work, but.. The Lowers are my home, and I'd like nothing more than to see them properly taken care of.

It'll be an experience, I'm sure, if I get on it.

I'M AN UNCLE! Well technically I'm not an uncle, cause Joscelin is my cousin, but I am definitely going to be Uncle Evaristo.

I'm proud and humbled. She's tiny, Joscelin let me hold her and tuck her into her bed.

I will do all I can for Josie and Ianthe Myrinda.

I seem to be running for a commoner's council! Huzzah! I am not certain how much actual running is involved - possibly quite a bit, since the upper and lower parts of the city have a lot of road between them, and it's all either uphill or downhill. But apparently people are going to have to vote for me. Not...not that they are required to vote for me, but that them voting for me is the only way for me to get this position. Which is a bit odd, but interesting! And fun! It's like a contest!

But I imagine people will want something more than 'vote for me, it's fun' as a platform or...explanation for why I'm running and what I can do. So. I run a successful business, and I've been over most of Arvum. I know how Arx depends on trade, on the safety of the roads, on both new visitors and longtime residents. I'm a dab hand with numbers, and hard to fool when it comes to getting my money's worth, and I think that's something that's pretty important when it comes to evaluating new initiatives and whether what people claim is going to help is likely to actually help. Nobody hates me, that I know of, and that's probably important when dealing with nobles. I've never been arrested for anything! Also important. And if the apocalypse happens, I can probably keep a good number of people alive in the war-torn wilderness!

So, if you're reading this, I guess vote for me!

I've never been a fan of quiet, myself. I had to be quiet a lot growing up, which was instructive but boring. Hmm. Actually, writing that reminds me of the exception. I love the quiet of the wilderness. It isn't silent, unless something bad is about to happen. But it's quiet in a warm, alive sort of way that makes you feel like all is right in the world. And then, sometimes it gets too much and you just have to whoop at the sky.

Also, there's nothing wrong with horny shapes!

Never scream while you're being swarmed by bugs, they'll get in your mouth.

Screaming's fine when it's just a stream of rats flowing around your ankles in the darkness.

Knowing when and where to scream is important. I'll update this list as I have more adventures.

The enthusiasm for my concerts continues unabated! It's quite exciting to put on a show, produce music people love, and educate them on one of the heroes of the past!

Note: performance halls are better for this than outdoor winter concerts, but the snow didn't get in the way too very much. There's much better seating in performance halls, too.
