Relationship Note on Margret

Thank goodness she offered to help me plan Nia's birthday party. She's two. She loves swords. I can not in good faith have a joust or sparring match as part of the party. I have it on good authority that two year olds and swords are a terrible combination for a party.

Relationship Note on Thena

In my defense I typically am perfectly good at eating the right thing in the lowers! There must have just been something subtle in there. I'll have to investigate and see what I can find.

That said...

I would go on a food tasting tour with Grandmaster Thena ANY DAY.

Things that are interesting about Arx!

There's a huge clock! I've never even really seen a clock before - I've seen a couple of things that maybe used to be clocks once upon a time, long long ago, but not one that's intact. And it works! And it's really tall. I assume that it tells the right time - it SEEMS right, and I guess it would know? Although how would we know that it knows, really? I figure, with a clock like that, it could be off by an hour or two and it wouldn't even matter, because after a while everyone just looks to the clock and the clock comes to define what time IS. The chimes are pretty.

The Sovereign Bridge! It's huge! And so very far up. I stood at the edge and leaned to look down at the Gray River, and I couldn't even really see it. Just a smudge in the dark somewhere down there that might have been the mist, or might have been my imagination. The wind whistles, and I do think I can hear the sound of the river down there somewhere. And then I got dizzy and needed to get back on real land! Besides, the guards were giving me that do-you-have-business-here look, and I really didn't.

The altar of Gild! Seriously, wow. I've already written about this - it's still shiny, it's still incredibly expensive. "Avarice Builds Cities" is a bit odd, but I kinda get it. We want things, so we reach out to other people to trade things we have for things we want. And we need places to do that, so we build them, and then we live there, and eventually someone starts going, hey, I'm pretty sure all this was built on my land, so I should probably be in charge of it, and then people either go along with it, or they don't, and when the dust settles, there's a city and a graveyard and a lord or lady!

Reflection Square in the Lyceum Ward. It's. Um. Well. Very pretty? Gives me the shivers, though, walking among all those pools and seeing myself looking back. It really is almost like glass, and I know it's a bit silly and Oathlands of me, but I've never really held with much in the way of mirrors, except what you absolutely need to look presentable. Having them all out in the open like that...I guess it's very Lycene.

A rain of rats! This isn't really a thing I saw. Or want to see. But apparently it's a thing that happens here. Arx is a really interesting place! But I think I'm going to look into buying something for the rain which is also verminproof. Also, I should check the prices of rat poison - maybe there's an opportunity there to get in on the ground floor?

It's true, I suppose, that I put a monetary value on life. How much I spend on training them, but I suppose it also bears writing out the people that go beyond a monetary value. The people that I consider mine, the one wherein harming them I will get actually mad, and cut a person into pieces. Some people get weird about these things, so here goes:

Shard, obviously. My second, and the only person I trust in the world to lead the Few.
Lys, my cousin, and the heir to the De Lire.
Enyo, another adventurer I've known for years.
Finally, but not last, Mae. The reorganization of the Mummers, and our work in the Burroughs. I both want to kill her, and I love her. Which takes precedent depends on the day.

Relationship Note on Martin

This week I went with my family to Brother Martin's funeral. I asked Tala if she wanted to go and she said she did. Though she spent most of it playing with the bunnies. I felt it was important for her to have that choice. And I was ready to leave the moment she was. But surprisingly she provided more comfort to me that evening than I to her. She truly has a sweet heart for all she has endured. I said my goodbyes and my thanks and some other things along with prayers. I wish there was more I could do.

Well, there is and I am. Thorley and I are finishing the paperwork for Tala's adoption. I find myself easily falling in love with this little girl and her mannerisms that are coming out as she recovers. Her health is still a touch fragile so we're limiting outings, but she has our best medic around the clock right now seeing to her care and recovery. Plus offers of support and love from friends and aquiantences. I hope the one person I offered to come into her life does though. We'll see.

We have received a loan.

The contract was arranged as we were promised. I am still very impressed with the urgency and helpfulness of the Crafters Guild.

I am already working on a couple of new dresses. I challenged myself by creating a quite dramatic long navy blue dress adorned with pieces of deep orange citrine gems. The drop-waist design of that gown gives the floor-length tiered skirt a tightly curve-hugging style. Only a very brave lady might actually desire for this type of an attire. I could see one wearing it at a masquerade. I heard that many are held in Arx.

Though, I do not forget common birth people. So, I used a design cherished by many noblewomen and found a way to represent same dress using only linen and a few laces. I did not color the fabric leaving it of a natural tone. I added additional layers of fabric to the skirt making it incredibly full and swish with each step. I am feeling quite proud of this one. After all, every woman shall walk feeling self-confidant and beautiful.

Finally, I created couple coats, nightgowns, gloves and some trousers for men. Usually, I focus on women fashion but I will have to change it here in Arx. Now I only wait when my husband will repair that house we have bought. I am very excited to get back to sewing and pleasing my customers!

I really hope we will have some customers... I feel as if I forced my husband to move to Arx. If we will have a very hard start, he might grow disappointed...

And I still have the wooden sword that Father gave me when I was a kid. I'll get another made for her, maybe?

To all of the would be heroes and heroines, there are things you should really take into account when going on an adventure:

1. Communication - You need to speak a common language with your group (obvious), but also have a decent selection of languages at hand. Not being able to communicate can fast lead to conflicts that might be avoided.

2. I have said this before, but patience. Sometimes the door you are planning to break down will be opened from the other side on its own., and most importantly..

3. While you might want to be the face that the rescued parties see and recognize as their savior, it doesn't matter how charming you are if these poor souls see you and your weapon covered in blood. At that moment, you look no better than the ones who put them there in the first place.

Dear journal, it has been a long time. I finally found you again. I forgot I'd taken you with me on that excursion to the Saffron chain. The sailors and seamen have come along. Most have been cured of their fear of hard work! We've even got a couple of reefers that aren't going to get themselves killed with the first squall that blows through while we're on patrol.

I finally got back the rubicund from the smith, and it's amazing. I've never seen pale golden rubicund before, but they assured me that it is a steel alloy, and like bronze the finish and polish count for a lot.

I've had a long conversation with the scribes, and they have explained this journal thing to me.

They are supposed to take copies of the journals lest they piss off the gods.

So, hello Vellichor. You're a wistful god, aren't you?

Relationship Note on Aurora

There hasn't been a day in the city where I have seen such activity surrounding the business of dresses. Long gowns of seasick dyed the softest sunset shades that bloom like roses, and bold, swirling creations of metal that somehow transform into something made less and more spectacular when considering the diaphanous nature of a dress that could somehow turn hard and unforgiving.

I watch how these garments get no sooner hung from a rack or a dummy than half the noble women in the city descend to reap their due. Have we any further proof that the wardrobes are being emptied, and the sublime designs made by Mistresses Aurora or Petal become the completely needed thing this very instant?

It's a wonder someone hasn't been reduced to clawing and scratching in defense of their acquisition. And for very good reason -- see how beautiful and delicate those frocks are, and it's no surprise we have a redux of the Ladies' War of 1008 AR.

In other words, last spring.

Relationship Note on Corbit

We both thrashed out the possibilities of what our senior scholar projects may be. I'm not sure I'm that much closer to deciphering what kind of topic I wish to present to the assembled senior Scholars and Bianca, but I hope that Lord Corbit feels more secure in his choice.

Without spoiling it publicly, I find his talents will no doubt be well-suited to whatever method of inquiry he wishes to make. If he sticks with the subject we discussed at the Ambassador Salon, there could be tremors that reshape our understanding of the city itself.

If it makes you feel better, having a stronger command of storytelling frequently produces more salient arguments and clearer statements. You can present your ideas descriptive and find the missing holes in the narrative.

In our line of work, that's a valuable thing.
