* Cheese twist was a success. Give recipe to Ada and get pie recipe from Marie. Bake pies.
* Stop darkening hair? For: Walnut rinse is expensive and messy. Against: I'll get accused of copying Commandant Marjawn again.
* Thank the Gods that the chickens eat most of the spiders at home. Nothing worse than running around the room with a glass and a piece of paper in hand. To the sound of high pitched screaming.
* Sharpen axes. Train. Get bow. Shoot arrows. I've gotten lazy.
Alright. It seems like recording useless details is more addictive than I thought it would be.

While Cassius is my cousin. I have lots of cousins and I didn't start to really get to know him and his sister the Late Duchess Nadia of rose-gold until not long before the battle of Silence. It feels like forever ago now. Cassius used to wear this really shiny armor (the shiniest) and he a diamond plate blade that Duchess Belladonna had given him back when such was very rare. With his golden hair, his Solace patrols and his book on fighting against the abyss, he was a hero who seemed out of legends and stories.
He used to run around a lot with Master Felix. They would do many patrols together and eventually for a time they took me under their wing, back when I had only two pieces of steel armor, one steel blade, an eagerness and just enough skill to know how to hold my blade right. He took me on a patrol with him. My first patrol into the Gray Forest. I hit one of the bringers and then it ripped through me with an agony as if something happened to me. I ended up on the ground in pain as the battle raged and it was Cassius who carried me back to Solace and it was him who stayed with me there for hours while the pain ripped through my body.
I cannot think back upon Cassius without remembering his sister. Her beauty was the sort that is rare - a beauty of face, of spirit and of grace. She was very feisty too and these tall dark boots she used to kick ass in and she was quite tiny. Duchess Nadia died while fighting against Silence and Cassius was very heartbroken at her lose, but he continued on, because he was a man who never let his own grief and own pain stop him from doing what needs to be done.
I joined Solace shortly after that and largely because of admiring him. I used to frustrate him greatly and it is quite understandable that I did. As Mae will tell many, I can be a brat. I wanted glory in battle and Cassius would tell me, its not about the glory, it is about duty, it is about doing the right thing, it is about going where you are needed most and not where you will shine most. I didn't alway listen to him. He would talk to me about the honor of defending vs charging into battle. He taught me one of the most important lessons and one that I still struggle with. When I retreated against the wasps and the slaver rather than lead a charge, it was Cassius' words that were with me, going, defend, protect, do the right thing. I followed that advice then and I am glad that I did.
He came back to see me recently with his son and in need of running lessons. Things have certainly changed with me giving him lessons! But physical lessons, so it is different. We ran around the Grayson courtyard and his son ran up to him and was taken into his arms. He was so happy. His joy for his family such a gentle and yet very strong love.

Relationship Note on Cassius
All of you writing about my cousin-in-law, all of you sharing sentiments about how short life is and how tragic his loss is, I do hope you are well-aware of how empty the mourned man would find all that. If you wish to honor Duke Cassius Pravus, go out there and serve. Do what needs to be done. Give your time to Gild and the Gods. That's how he ought to be remembered.

Relationship Note on Cassius
I never thought I would fight any war at anyone's side, but he was a true knight and a true commander.
Can't say we were intimates. But he defended the world. A good man I trusted with my life.
If the skeletons could drink we would be raising a glass.

The clean salt spray is better than the dirty city in almost every way that I can count. Arx is a nice city, so far as it goes, but it's still a city. It's stone and dead trees heaped upon wood. It has amazing parties, though! That's the only thing that I miss when I'm out on the sea.
I was at the chandlers earlier, out of my uniform of course, and the goodwoman behind the counter addressed me as captain. I've never seen her in my life, and while they only sell some things to captains of ships, there are sailors in and out of there at all hours of the day. So I asked her about it, thinking perhaps I'd left on my epaulets or had forgotten myself and was wearing my bridge coat.
"You can always tell a ship captain," she says. "Even without their uniform."
So, that's something to think about. What is it that gave it away?
And no, dear journal, I wasn't buying an anchor or some other piece of hardware. It was actually a new canvas satchel because the leather handle on the old one finally rotted through.

I will forever remember that time in the shop years ago when we first truly spoke, and I first made him smile. That image will be the one carried always in my heart.

I need to get up, go to the stables, have some tea, and send messengers this morning. I hope Asger and Ann won't collapse from shock when they see me up and about.
So much has happened that I've missed. I've got some catching up to do.

Relationship Note on Lianne
I was referring more to leaving this life gently in the mind and soul, gently travel the wheel and gently come off when ready. The journey from this life to what awaits him next.
The manner in which he passed....no. Not a gentle one. Not at all.
You, and the others, /always/ have me for whatever you need. Ask and it is yours. Take good care of Bella for me.

And I look forward to learning all he is.
And may Lagoma look upon us with favour in our endeavours.
