Relationship Note on Duncan

It took two missives to get the Marquis to respond. The third one I was going to dictate that the messenger pout when delivering it.

He is an interesting man with casual business as well as a more formal feel to it. I look forward to another tea.

Relationship Note on Hammar

A simple man, but not without depth, like a strong current running beneath the surface of the still sea. What surprises me most is how protective I feel toward a man that could crush just about anything with that hammer of his.

I've finally started writing that book. I would place some of it here, to prove that I'm actually writing it and not simply talking out of my ass. But it's not for anyone else's eyes. This book is for someone specific.

I've settled on a plot, on the characters, even the setting. I'm admittedly overly excited, this is a journey I've been preparing to put myself on for far too long, putting it off out of my own self doubt.

I just hope they love it.

I cannot believe I drank that beer at the inn when I first arrived. Not anywhere near as good as the brewers' out west. I drank and I drank expecting it to get better. "Nothing could be this bad" I thought "It must have something going for it." But no! Before I knew it I was three bottles down and seeing more stars than the night's sky.

I will never understand Crownlands beer.

Relationship Note on Natalia

The youthful princess and I had tea in The Unkindness, of all places. Quite an interesting young woman, though she herself pleads that she is boring. A new friend, perhaps? Who can say. I hope so, at the very least.

An interesting man with an interesting story. While it is not mine to tell, I do look forward to taking more tea with him. Perhaps we will cultivate a friendship.

This seems like it has been the longest I've remained within the walls of Arx in the past few years. It's been long enough that I'm starting to feel the itch to get back out into the field. To wander off the edges of the map, just to see what I can find. To bring back records and relics, and maybe even a few strange new plants for Olivia's collection.

But with Harlan gone, I need to stay here to act as Voice.

Luckily, I have a few side projects to keep me occupied. I have the Adventurer's Society to finish organizing, my reference copies of the maps I've made to organize for my own records, and a particularly interesting translation project to work on.

But still, I wonder if my heart will ever be entirely content within the city walls.

"King Alaric sat on a wall,
King Alaric had a great fall.
Four-score Men and Four-score more,
Could not make King Alaric what he was before." - I heard a group of children singing the above rhyme as they played. What dark days we've come to.

I had a dream last night. It was a dream of Sanctum, as if the tragedy that was the death of so many of our family had never happened. We had never come to Arx, my Uncle still ruled and the people praised his name. Beaumont was the greatest knight the Valardin family had ever known and Sophie was the most beloved Mercy in the Oathlands. I wept for what we have lost, but know all too well that we must hope the present is for the best and events will lead us to a better path and place in our lives.

I cannot help but wonder if the massacre of Sanctum, the tragedy that befell the King and his party and the explosion near the Graveyard are all connected; part of some intricate plot that threatens to consume the Compact. Seemingly, all events are unrelated and separated by time, but I feel there must be a link, if not between all three, then at least two. Only time will tell. I pray to the Gods, all of them, that we do not find these missing links too late.

I may be released from your service now you have other duties that bind you within the city walls for the coming year, but know I am still grateful for your friendship and your believing in me. For giving me a chance. I will not forget.

I have always thought we lived in a world of great shadowy secrets, with intrigue and tragedy lurking around every corner.

Now I am quite certain I am right. It feels different, feeling it to be concrete truth instead of fancy.

It's...

Scary.

And not entirely in the good, gooseflesh heartrace cold savage thrill way.

Relationship Note on Cara

Cara is a Rubino by birth and thus, not exactly my cousin, but almost. Our family is confusing.

She is very sensible and intelligent and knows a good many things.

Also, she is beautiful and sad and very tall, like a tragic heroine.

(Woe is me. Proper tragic heroines are never as short as me.)

I am slowly getting to know the ways of the city. The ways of the mainlanders. Their food, their fashion and their sense of honor.

Their duels are intensely unsatisfying. No broken bones, no friendly drink when it was over, no boasting. No crowd of friends egging them on.

So strange.

A dozen fires crowded on a single canvas. A bright splotch set against a simple cross of dark branches. A fire backlighting a horde of ashen trees. Three bonfires in slightly different configurations. A fireplace. A person made of fire. The rest of the fires are disinterested scribbles. In the margins, a small hand, three interlocked rings. Scattered dog teeth.

Sometimes I feel as though we are at a crossroads, and in either direction, the road stretches out towards fire and ruin.

Perhaps it is time to follow the Ashford way, and to blaze a new path.

But I am afraid, for the shadows are deep and I know not what lies within them.
