I watched the snow falling last night as the lamp lighters walked down the dimming streets lighting light after light so that people could find their way.

They were singing to the flames as they went. It was so hauntingly beautiful.

It caused a soft twinge of something in my heart. Something in such a simple act spoke to me, I suppose. I listened until they disappeared down the street leaving pools of light in their wake.

I think that is how I wish I could be. To bring light and magic to a darkening world and leaving a glow for others to find their way safely home or to wherever they wish or need to be.

The last few weeks have been more than normally eventful, but is the culmination of a long goal in a manner. What the end result will be, I can not say yet, there are still many questions and uncertain outcomes, but the path is now more outlined.

I have been more social this last few days than for near a year prior, apart from time spent with the other Guards, which is not quite the same.

A few weeks ago, I put out a call for the citizens of our dear city to write and tell me what fire meant to them. I expected the answers I received to be romanticized and focused on passion. Instead many were nuanced and well considered, with some baring deeply personal events in the writer's past. It was an enjoyable exercise and one I may revisit in the future. My own answer, for posterity:

"To me, fire is a simple solution that can be applied to any problem; it is only limited by willpower, creativity and mastery over its wild nature. It is never enough on its own, but will clear the way for what might follow. Though that answer may seem plain, that is exactly what change is, the end result of solving a problem."

Metaphorically speaking, of course. A fire that burns alone dies alone, but can achieve great things when given purpose and partnership.

Relationship Note on Darren

Darren is surely the best cousin that a Princess could have. I feel blessed of having his support.

Seems there has been something of a change in the asking price of some writs with the broker today. When just a few weeks ago three-hundred and twenty was seen as a possible amount for some, the interest has changed.

Always utterly curious to watch the flow of favours move within the city.

Previously my idea of setting up a winter home between this city and Southport was sighed at by the family. Well, I am certain some comfort and luxury would have been appreciated on the ride up or down now.

What is interesting is that, currently, the flow of boats into the expanded harbour has not taken a hit. I imagine those arriving near the whirlpool who weren't informed are turning back and finding somewhere safe to dock. Perhaps, until the plug is put in it, therein lies the solution.

[A copy of this letter is forwarded to the Great Archive for record keeping.]
Dear Mother-

I got your letter just recently. Yes, things are going quite well here in Arx. No, I feel perfectly well, thank you. My sister and my cousins are all taking excellent care of me.

As I may have mentioned in a previous letter; her grace, Liara Grayson, has taken me as a protege. She and I have begun to work on a project for me to spearhead here in the city. If all goes to plan with it I might travel home sometime to head up a similar project there.

On that note-- did you know that there is a particular type of worm that someone has decided to call 'red wrigglers'? They're very good at fertilizing soil. The flowers I have started growing outside of my windows here in the villa are growing quite well! I think I might have some talent in agriculture and cultivation!

But I should get back to my research now.

Yours,
Bellamy

I have never been a particularly pious person. Yet, here I am sitting on the docks staring off into the water. It isn't the whirlpool that catches my interest today. No, instead it is the way the tide dances against the shore. It is the vastness of the sea. It is the way the ocean turns from blue to green to gray and back again. As the briney smell of the sea washes over me I cannot help be wonder;

Can I make a blade that captures some essence of the sea?

I think I shall try.

Relationship Note on Felix

All things pass when their time comes. This does not make the loss of my favorite scythe any less irritating. Its wooden handle broke, perhaps hastened along by the heavy, wet snow we have endured all winter. I have had my best craftsmen build new handles to the previous one's exact specifications, but none was able to replicate the grace and ease of that original handle, which allowed me to swing my huge weapon with the facility of a sword.

What soothes my annoyance at the loss of my scythe is the work of Brother Felix Meadson. He has crafted a sword that moves as though it is part of my hand, rather than merely gripped by it. I am so awed by this weapon that I have titled it The Blood of Redreef, and I have no doubt that when it becomes my time to pass, it will serve Baronesses and Barons of Redreef for many generations to come.

Relationship Note on Kutazer

I like him for Rhiannon; he's a good choice.

Anyone who insists he'll be there, wherever his wife is, no matter what dangers she wants to get into? He's a good Ashford and a good man, a good husband.

I think we're going to have a lot of fun exploring: Rhia, Kutazer and me. Though, I'm not so sure about the Isles, anymore.

It's very interesting to me when I find a true friend.

How do I know when I find one? Because they listen.

I think I found two this week - maybe three, but definitely at least two; and I reunited with another one.

And I'm not so alone, anymore.

To observe one's people happy and pleased, even in these dark times, is the true reward of leadership. There will certainly come a day, generations down the line, when darkness will encroach upon our shores once more, when centuries will have eroded the mighty Black Fleet and dulled our fires, but for now they enjoy prosperity they have earned no matter their origin, and that is good enough.

When we wane once more, more like us will rise to turn the tide. For as long as there is Pravus, the Setarcan people will never be conquered, they will never be prey.

I was once told the opposite of freedom is death, to cease and end, but that doesn't ring true any more. The journey of a soul is long and unafraid, it cannot end until it is over. There are many mysteries in this world, far too many for one lifetime.

The first week in the store has gone well, quite a few of the different clothes off the shelf premade by me. Material prices are having an effect though so we shall find out how that plays out.

Visited some of the other shops, some people barely charge for the time it takes. That's concerning.

Astrid has created a new game for the two of us to partake in. She's called it 'Barathrum-Boom' after the blade Dame Ida meticulously crafted to perfection.

My daughter tells me that while as she is small and unable to make a lot of noise (a lie), she is unfit to control a storm. Because she does not possess the qualities of thunder. However, she's incredibly confident that she is accurate and energized enough to embody lightning.

So she looks to me and says, "Father, you're big. You be thunder."

My role in the game is to stomp, yell and rumble furniture. While Astrid leaps from things and makes crackling noises, followed by something resembling an explosion. Together we create the storm.

The cat doesn't like it. She has clawed me no less than seven times when I've started causing a ruckus. I believe she'll eventually come to accept this begrudgingly, but with thinly veiled hatred brewing under the surface. As she does everything in life.

Relationship Note on Imogene

There was not enough time for me to get to know you as well as I'd have liked but the few images of you were always glittering and gleaming. You were a noble creature with a fiery spirit that was not easily fizzled, which of course is why you were also the best part of my brother though I'm sure he'd admit to you being all the best parts of him.

You will not be forgotten but you will be missed very dearly by all those who were deeply lucky to know you.
