What is hope?

I was asked that recently, and I had to think about it. People hope for different things, which to some degree makes hope different for each of us. Yet on inspection there is a common thread. Hope is about a positive change, or a positive lack of change. We hope for something to be different in a way that we see as better, or we hope for something we see as better to last longer. To some degree that makes hope an aspect of Lagoma, the Lady of Change.

I asked myself a different question afterwards. What do /I/ hope for?

It is so much easier to write in abstracts than to find the words for how I feel. I wonder if it is like that for others.

You will make a fine leader to those guards, I'm certain.

I'd offer some advice but my 'commanding through fear' is _apparently_ not something to advise.

Good luck.

Good and lively night at the Murder this evening; Evaristo put on quite the show, and his tales of Copper helping the common folk were ones I'd never heard! Knowing someone with that much power went out of her way so often to use it to help us down here, and then still gave it all when the clocktower fell...gives a salty sea dog some much-needed perspective on that day. I'm humbled, and will take a bit of hard-earned coin to pick up a little bit of something copper to wear on my person, much as others have done.

We all had a very spirited conversation about choice, for good or ill, and our Visitors From Afar...voices about the emissaries have been pretty grim down here, some even suggesting we Lowers folk will be the ones to pay a blood price in the end. Think the emissaries are a bunch of pompous tossers, meself, but talk of blood is always alarming, so I did what we've been asked to do and reached out to Sina Godsworn, one of our new Commoner Councilors, and asked how a humble sort could expect to know much about Undying Whosits, and she responded right away -- seems more information for us is a big concern, and in the works!

Don't harbor any illusions that anybody subscribes to me Whites, but...if you see this, be patient. Keep your ears and eyes open, friends...we're not alone.

(On that note, seems like there was one among us who was tonight who was not exactly who she appeared, and sparked most of our talk about choices...may have been a trick of the light as she left, but...we certainly live in interesting times!)

Relationship Note on Austen

There is nearly a decade between my brother and I. One might think that would lead us to not be as close as siblings who did not have as great an age difference, or that perhaps I might seem more mother than sister to him. I'm glad that's not the case, and I don't think it ever really has been. Of course I have always looked out for him, but I think he has done the same for me as well in his own ways. It is hard to put to word how important a person my brother is to me. He is one of the best knights and people I know, which I say with very little bias. Ask him. He'll be the first to note I don't give him kind words easily.

In any case, that he will be one of the Silver Swords, The King's Own, The Hundred, is something that makes me so proud. The paths and decisions that lead him here have not always been easy, but he has taken step after step with humbleness and honor. Congratulations, brother.

Sir Austen's earlier Iron Guard retinue has been reassigned to me.

So, now I have three guards following me everywhere. Good men. Really annoying to never be left alone however. I mean. Why? I don't need them! I got three dogs too! And Gene Erique!

And now they've sent twenty fresh recruits, most of them not even twenty years old yet, to have a week of training in the Kennels, with me as their teacher.

I feel like I am getting hazed or something.

The Iron Guardsmen recently assigned to me have been reassigned.

Such a relief to not have them lurking everywhere I go. Especially when they were hanging around in the shop all the time. I think Rigby was getting nervous.

Relationship Note on Austen

Sir Austen Ferron has been a fine guardsman and recently was promoted to the rank of officer within the Iron Guard. It's a bittersweet moment when you lose such an outstanding member of your organization to another so that they can follow their path. I hope that we've given him some additional tools that he can utilize after he swears into the King's Own.

He'll always have allies among his former comrades in arms.

Good luck, Sir Austen.

We had many big dogs in Farhaven, among all sorts of other pets and animals, and each with their own personality once you got to know them. Pup, creatively named by one of us when we were all mostly no more than knee-high, was the most loyal and patient hound I think I ever knew. He'd let us use him as a pillow at the fire and followed us around the forest no matter how long we were out, or cold it got. Twinkletoes, named for her white toes on an otherwise dark chestnut coat of fur. Her eyes were so beautiful, like the velvety black of midnight in summer. I swear no one could keep from slipping her treats from the banquet tables when she turned those eyes on them. So many, all with their own little anecdotes, though Tultus' might be the one of my favorite to tell.

All white, Tultus wasn't an old dog but had a lot of trouble seeing. No one really mentioned why and I guess, as children, we didn't think to ask. That was just How He Was. As I got older, I did wonder, as it seemed something must have happened to him to cause that and other odd behavior I didn't think much on back then. All the dogs would often get bones whenever there was a big feast at the castle. They'd gnaw off the meat, the marrow, and then maybe go bury them or the bones would end up tossed to the forest if one of the cooks or staff tripped on them enough times. Tultus, though, rarely would let a bone go. He would gnaw at his like the others, clean the meat and marrow and all that he possibly could from it, and then go bury it. Unlike most of the other hounds, though, he would inexplicably go back days, sometimes even /weeks/, later and dig it up for no reason anyone could understand. We would watch, often befuddled, as he gnawed on something we thought quite long buried. He never seemed to notice that it was odd behavior, poor dear.

Relationship Note on Arik

I imagine House Telmar is going to ask you to stop helping them soon, Lord Halfshav, despite your alliance. While Aleksei Morgan responded to your main point rather well, let me just say that comparing my writings about what has happened to me to traitorous and criminal actions is not a particularly graceful move, either.

I wonder - do you think I don't deserve justice simply because I wasn't born of noble blood? Is your relationship with the Sentinel so poor? House Telmar is the custodian of its honor and the master of its own fate.

As for the distinction between my position as a Whisper and yours as a noble, it's simply this: my position is not my birthright. Any privilege I may have, I have earned. I do not owe anyone except very specific debts I might have made, personally. I could step down as a Whisper entirely tomorrow and it would not be a mark of dishonor against me simply for stepping down. Whisper is not my identity, Bliss is. Thus, it is entirely possible for me to speak as one and act as another.

Perhaps you haven't realized this, but the sword stopped being what it was supposed to be the second that Everard lost that duel. He shamed the legacy it was supposed to represent, he stained his family name, and then he tried to reclaim that honor through thuggery.

Their honor is represented by stolen property.

I want what I won so many years ago. I do hope you encourage House Telmar to do the right thing, as you have written you are now in support of.

I find myself missing the halls of The Storm March these days. I can at least understand most of what drives the abandoned tribes, but not these new visitors.

There is strength in unity, and I am reminded of this as our house presses forward, in order to create stronger more lasting ties and alliances.
