Relationship Note on Laric

All the talk here about siblings has made me wish I had some. Of course, there's Laric, who is near as a brother to me, since we were close growing up and he was also more or less raised by my father. Somehow the mischief we got up to in our younger days turned into more more death-defying adventures since then. But we're both still alive, and I'm grateful for that.

Relationship Note on Eleyna

For a time I thought I had two siblings. Then it turned out I did have two siblings, just not the two I called brother and sister for most of my life.

Then I lost one before I could ever truly know her.

Eleyna remains, and she's proven to be a startling source of support and love. I am not one to usually speak of such things in the whites, preferring my musings to remain private. Yet, it would be unfortunate if the affection and gratitude I feel were kept forever silent, unknown till my death would see her read my black journals.

So, there you go, Eleyna.

I feel inspired.

I can only thank Jayus for this reprieve, since it's been so long since I've felt such. I think the hardest part about painting -- despite the many failures that get discarded -- is having to give up said works. I won't say it's like giving up a child, since I have no knowledge of what that must feel like, but I do know it's amongst the greatest struggles I face.

Those who are interested in my recent works will find them at the upcoming Inquisition Art Auction and Fundraiser.

Siblings are both trial and treasure. At least mine are. They are problems when I want to keep them safe and they will insist upon making the dangerous choice instead, I am certain just to spite me. Of course, they would also perhaps say the same of me - and rightly so. Sometimes I think to myself, "What would annoy Jaenelle the most?" And then that's exactly what I do.

Well. Okay, not really. When it works out that way it's really just accidental, I swear.

I love my siblings. I would do nearly anything to protect them. And some days I hate them, the way only siblings can. But they are mine - mine to fight with, and to love, and to defend in turn. I may give Valerius grief, I may occasionally tweak Galen's moustache, I may make Jaenelle as crazy as only a twin can. But they're mine to do that to. Best you not try that yourself, or you'll find me knocking on your door.

Brothers and sisters? Mine are great. We're not close. Growing up, mother always used to say that children are impossible in any quantity greater than one. At least, in her letters.

It depends on the size of the grouping. In this case, since I'm determined to have no less than twelve, I believe it would be called an 'odyssey'. If it were a smaller group, then it falls to a 'venture'.

We will have an Odyssey of phoenixes, though we will start with a venture. And technically they'll be dracophoenixes. Twice the fire!

I am blessed with the worst siblings in the world.

They give me lovely little gifts that I do not deserve. And they commiserate with me to overturn the gentle composure of our cousin, like good scheming sisters should.

Next thing I know, one of them is going to give me a great, lovely bookshelf to encourage never getting any work done. I'm going to need to knock down a wall and take over my erstwhile other cousin's room as part of my own. I've run out of space.

And I still need my starry mural. O for a painter...

Oh I don't doubt they will! Don't worry, I will happily teach them to use weapons, armor, strategy, and tactics so they can have a good strong defensible location as well.

I kid I kid, Alexandre will do that first no doubt.

I adore children as well, and I think Rosa and Alex will make very beautiful ones.

The Faith, of course, takes oaths to both the gods and the Crown, and that is all I meant to refer to in my journal.

But you are right that the King's Own and the Faith are very different organizations, despite their similarities in that members of both swear to take no other competing obligations. I was far-less precise than I could be, and I thank you for the correction.

They will produce a brood (is it called a brood) of little pheonixes that will probably burn my villa down at some point!

And I couldn't be happier about it, really, I adore children as a rule, and children of my favorite niece most of all.

I never got a chance to have siblings, my parents were killed before they could have more than me. But then, war is a terrible thing that steals the people we love from us at the worst times. I intend for my children to have more siblings than they know what to do with!

The efforts to gather stones for the shrine of jayus have trickled to a near standstill. I can't justify putting more time towards it myself with the threat to the lodge looming closer and closer. I hope someone will carry it forward in the other wards fo the compact, as Princes Sabella did for Grayson.

Service to the gods is a higher calling than service to the Crown. Both are laudable, but should not be conflated.

It appears that we are writing about siblings now. I tend to stay away from the trends that seem to capture the white journals from time to time, but this is a topic on which I am proud to write.

My brothers and I have all dedicated ourselves to the service of the Crown. My eldest, Blessed Etienne, is the archlector of Gild. And my slightly older, Sir Tovell, serves alongside me in the Silver Swords.

My service to the Telmarch is one of the happiest chapters in my life. But my service to King and Compact is where I -- and my brothers -- have truly found our purpose.

It's no secret I'm partial to Gemecittan quartz; when the wonderful Duchess Sylvie and Duke Valkieri brought the gem to my attention with its unique qualities and exclusive accessibility, I was hooked. Dazzled. Enchanted. There's nothing quite like it, quartz, yes, as common to the mines of the Gemecittan and yet found no where else, with it's many colors in every perfectly cut specimen.

There are gem-cutters in the city who curse the stuff; it seems the lapidaries born in the same land the jewel hails from are the best suited to handle it. It's not a matter of skill, I would guess; we have thousands of fine cutters right here in the city, but there's a trick to it, an insight into the nature of the material and all the best ways to bring out those many colors.

You see, while some stones like Alexandrite or it's purple-hued cousin, or gems like Ametrine with both the purple and yellow of amethysts and citrine, have -two- colors inherent in them, Gemecittan quartz can sport as many as -four-. I've heard rumors of a few specimens with five, one with six! But I've never had the honor of seeing them.

I do my best to do the stones of Gemecitta justice, mimicking architecture from the city-state, designs and patterns I've seen in jewelry that's imported from there, but sometimes I fear I fall woefully short. In truth, when I am stuck or between commissions, at a loss, or suffering from too many failures at the bench, I will pull out a few of my trays of Gemecittan quartz and pull out one, two, three gems, and set them into ready-made pieces. They always look beautiful and never fail to sell, and they always, -always-, share their joy on them that lay eyes on them. I know my work is a carrier for that joy, a vessel, and it pleases me that those of all walks of life can both afford and enjoy them too.

There are days in which I get very angry at the world. Today is one of those days.

Perhaps it is not the world I am mad at.

Perhaps it is just one awful person.

You are the worst.
