I find myself bewildered at the grand sights of Arx and Arvum. I find myself aghast at the opportunity with which I've been given, to guard my cousin, the King, with my very life.

Relationship Note on Violet
So Violet wanted to try her hand at poetry - I'm not sure a dirty limerick counts, but it inspired me to try to put words to parchment, and feelings that I had rediscovered since arriving in Arx.
Two hearts to One to Three
I remember sadly the day I fled,
sure that our bond with dissolve,
Filled with fear in my head,
I had doubted my resolve.
For the next months I was filled with regret.
I knew what I had walked away from
The Redrain woman with who my heart as set
If I were to return, we would be undone.
Then came the Duke's order,
a return to Arx and to duty.
I was filled with fear, I was not bolder,
Even as I stepped off the ship, I preapred to flee.
I approached the temple with trepedation,
I know you'd be there, head bowed in prayer,
I watched you in that silent contemplation.
And lost my heart again, right then and there.
But once again, I preapred to run.
For you, from us, from what we were.
So sure was I that our relationship was done.
Then you are at my side, stronger than a white fir.
I had thought that another would claim your heart,
that your hand would have been claimed.
I didn't even know where I wished to start,
to earn back your soul's domain.
You did not forgive me at first,
Trust had to been reearned, lessons had to be taught.
Yet as we continued to press on, I felt that thirst,
To hold you, and be yours, and to let us be caught.
Eventually passions returned, and were made,
But still trust remained at a stray,
It took a vow of my heart and my sword to make fear fade,
And now in you, where two hearts now beat, I shall stay.

It is good to see that my cousin has moved through the social circles and made impressions upon those whom would hold her in esteem throughout the city. That she is able to move in such circles and come away still containing joy and exuberance in life and maintaining a sense of self is something that is not only commendable, but in these times it is also necessary.
I know that she will represent the house well as we move into the next chapter of our existence.

It is always interesting when one spends time out among the other nobility. The things one hears, the stories that pass from lips to ears. Sometimes one can hear the most wonderful things. Wonderful in that they can then take it home to their sister and relentlessly tease them about it. My week has ended upon a joyfully mischievous note.

Shopping at the market today, I was entertained to find that there were hockers and gentlemen offering to get me a good price on cheap metal -- we're talking ugly scrap, right, the kind of rusty, garbage scrap metal you use for things when you're literally too poor to use anything else -- from the highest of the Peers.
I bought my bolts of aeterna and went on my merry way, but I have to tell you, when I was a kid, I would have been screaming about this at the entrance to the market and probably getting my filthy little friends together with a basket of slightly overripe tomatoes to throw.

It pleases me to read the outpouring of support for Dame Morrighan's fine works in the Whites today. Certainly my wife and I both prize the many fine pieces we have been lucky enough to commission from her. There are many exciting designers in Arx, but when it has to be the best, it has to be the tailor bear.

New challenges bring new assignments. With the shift of authority for the safety of the lodge towards the Iron Guard, I went and opened my mouth. In military that is paramount to volunteering, so I was sumarily voluntold to organize efforts.
When those efforts became organized and it was clear it would be primarily mounted patrols of the surrounding regions of the Crownlands, I was moved from command of the Pike to command of the Calvary.
I am not at all troubled by these new duties, but it is a learning curve. The logistics involved in ensuring not just men but horses are well trained and supplied is a notably higher challenge. I gladly accept the guidance and experience of those veteran commanders used to working with mounted forces, should any wish to provide me such. I want to do my best for the men and women, and horses, under my new command.

I queried Lord Baltus about what being a soldier meant to him while we were discussing what kind of weapon a commander of Darkwater might use.
This is what he said:
"Being a soldier means a lot of things. Defending those weaker than yourself. Protecting your loved ones from harm. Doing the right thing, even when the right thing means cutting another man down..."
I mentioned that what he seemed to say about soldiers resonated with how others had described knights. He clarified for me.
"Knights serve a more lofty cause, in my mind. I suppose that I see soldiers as the every man. Fighting for that which matters to them. Outside of social class."
We made a simplification - there are knights who are not attuned to martial pursuit. That while all knights are soldiers, not all soldiers are knights.
And that is, perhaps, a good thing.
