I read some of those journals left recently, and I wonder if the denizens of Arx have lost something.

Were one of the greatest tailors of Arx to make me an outfit I'd wear it with pride, even were it three strips of wool. I might wear it with undergarments - that stuff itches - but I'd wear it and be glad of it. I arrived in Arx wearing rags, grateful to have arrived at all.

Were one of my liege lord's lord's kin to offer me insult, I'd protest to my lord and let her deal with it. Perhaps I am old-fashioned, perhaps my House cleaves to traditions that were no more by the time some others were created, or perhaps Thrax does not handle such matters the way the rest of the Compact does, but I learned at my mother's knee that such is the graceful way to handle these things. I arrived in Arx hoping that my brother had survived and sure that all my other kin were dead, and finding that I still have a family, someone to whom to give my fealty, and a place in the world will forever be a joy.

Perhaps it's the ordeals I've endured, where simply surviving another day was a victory. Perhaps it's the ordeals I've seen, where death became a blessed end to suffering. Perhaps it's the memories that haunt me through the nights that tell me that there are more important things in life than what seems so vital to life here.

While Arx whiles away the idle days with duels and parties, others pay for that with their lives. Some of you knew Countess Paige, many of you far better than I. She was a woman who did her duty. Will they be able to say the same of you?

Fond as I am of silk, I must confess that cotton sheets are much more comfortable.

I was born in the Silken City.

I'll keep wearing silk, whether simple or extravagant.

A little bit of home right on the skin, soft and perfect.

I should go shopping...

If I had it my way it would be similar to your way.

So indeed, this is why we don't always get our way.

Until the moment we do, which is always /wonderful/.

Must we wear clothes?

All this talk about clothes reminds me of how possessive a certain highborn person is of my completely mundane and average boots.

The one time I let my cousin borrow them he immediately noticed and bought another pair for them so he could get them back... which probably cost ten times the amount they were worth.

NEVER CHANGE.

Ainsley and I have reason to look very fondly on a rainbow cotton dress.

It all depends on the context.

For example, in a blizzard, you don't want silk, seasilk, umbra, or aeterna. You want fur and wool and to get the hell inside.

To change into your brightest shift and find your husband, preferably.

My absolute favorite dress in the world is a pretty purple woolen one with silver butterflies that Mistress Petal made me.

Or the pink linen one I was wearing when I officially met Prince Niklas!

And if that's wrong, I don't want to be right!

Though my rainbow aeterna and seasilk one is also pretty. And I suppose I was wearing a silver aeterna dress the night I actually met Prince Niklas, although I wouldn't know his name for another week or so. I suppose what I'm saying is I love all my dresses, even the ones that aren't deemed worthy by others!

Maybe especially those ones.

There's no denying the simple pleasures of stripping one's curtains from the windows, tearing up one's rugs from the floor, and wearing both out among the public on a warm spring day.

As long as the carpet matches the drapes, you lot. Nothing less will do.

If I had my way, it would be steelsilk. All steelsilk. And star iron. And dragonweep. Some alaricite, too, if I am being perfectly honest.

And this is assuredly but one reason why the gods have deemed it fit that no one should get their way all the time.

The matter of the sponsorship mentioned earlier has been set to rights amicably. I would like to thank Whisper House and Bliss Whisper for their sponsorship of tonight's event.

And I would like to thank as well all our sponsors who enabled us to put on such a remarkable show to celebrate the grand opening of Crafters Gallery at Crossroads:
Duke Harlan Ashford, Lord Seth Steelhart, Duchess Grazia Rubino, Duchess Dafne Zaffria, Archduke Darren Redrain, Marquessa Cambria Mazetti, Princess Alarissa Thrax, Princess Isabeau Valardin.

Our outstanding models! Melody, River, Yasmine, Caspian, Gianna and Princess Alarissa.

Our lovely caterer, Lottie.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart to the talented artisans whose works were showcased! Each of you is a treasure to be praised a thousand fold:

Lyiana, Mirari, Aaron, Josephine, Morrighan and Oliver.

And of course, thank you to Guildmaster Joscelin whose leadership and vision is well respected and rightfully admired by us all.

I quite like the feel of silk. Though I think after reading the whites of Master Wild, Dear Dragon, that I may have to get some Aeterna sheets made for our bedchambers.

As for the cheapness of silk. I have plenty of it in my wardrobes, I wear nothing less, but you remember this dear dragon. You quite liked me in Aeterna. Victus I think prefers me in a nice crimson seasilk. So it would seem that Whispers - or it may just be the one - have deemd silk is not proper, not fit and not the trend.

I suppose then, that I shall have to turn to cotton? Spring is coming. I shall have to consult with the Lady Zoey as to how to plan for the coming season of cotton, cotton, cotton.

I haven't worn cotton velvet in some time. I suppose I will be much cooler on the ships as we journey to Maelstrom.

The accountants will be happier at least. Clothing budget will have at least four or five times less!

Dearest dragon, cotton it shall be. I wonder who will join me....

Relationship Note on Paige

I didn't personally know the Countess Paige, but her death in the midst of Arx is greatly disturbing. I do not have an eye for investigation, though increasingly, I wish it were otherwise, so I could assist those who have not found justice.

Buy seasilk. It's like normal silk, only fashioned by those with a mind for the sea.

Therefore, it is objectively better.
